Installing in 5,4,3,2/...

20 mins later....

It's pretty cool!

The graphics are really good, they've done a terrific job wth the draw distance, and the stress test reported I was getting a min FPS of over 100, and a max of about 200 - amazing for 1680x150 with AA on.

The game has quite a few PC configurable options for lower end system to get it running smooth, more than I expected from a console port.

I think I could get into this!

Cancelled download at 14%. Xp SP3 or Vista SP1 only.

Edit: After a quick convo with Rocky, I thought I should explain. I'm sitting stable on XP SP2, and I won't update to SP3 without a good reason. The Hawx demo is not a good enough reason for me. That's all.

Another problem with HAWX (by the way I installed & then uninstalled it), after install it requires you update your graphics drivers to the latest which incase of Nvidia is 182.xx. This creates other problems with some other games, where older drivers were stable & functional and the new one now can create situations similar to 'Dannik' pointed out with SP3.

This happened to me with 182.xx & Eve-online, it might be a fault of the driver or eve but either way the older 178.xx worked fine and the 182.xx creates reset & lockups.

just a note, as HAWX will not run with 178.xx and forces you to get 182.xx or it will not run.

That isn't exactly unusual or unnecessary though, games have been demanding the newest videocard drivers (or utilizing features exclusive to them) since we got dedicated graphics cards, and i'd have to say the forced update message is a huge stepup from the old inexplicable blank screen crashes we got in a lot of older games.

Anyway, i'm surprised at how good of reception you guys are giving HAWX, i may actually have to try it out. I was assuming it'd be nothing more than a straightforward Ace Combat clone, and seeing as i'm pretty content with the AC series i wasn't planning to check it out. It must have something more to offer if it's impressing you guys, so i'll give it a try when i can

I'll qualify my excitement by saying I only played it for a short period and am commenting only on the visuals so far

Although I did read a flight simmer on the Ubi forums saying he really enjoyed it.

I never agree with you Sup and once again I'm not :P

HAWX is no simulation, it is virtually an arcade game with some fancy graphics, the controls are a direct port of the console version and joystick proportional moment is poor, 60% nothing last 30% everything, it's easier on an X360 controller attached to the PC, how sim is that?. I tried it before 182.xx drivers screwed my pc and I have little to give it, GRID on the other hand is real fun although it's a car game than follows the same line, not sim more arcade.

The game splits the experience into two main flight models, standard (normal) and advanced (expert), in std mode your in cockpit or behind the plane, in advanced you have no cockpit or behind the plane view it is remote camera only, this is how Ubi delivers the game to all. You want some sim like flying then get prepared to do some radio controlled combat maneuvers.

I had real hopes for this title and got slated about it when I first posted last year, now it's here it's worst than I expected. I gave it 5/10 for the graphics and fun, the rest pulls the marks down.

Buy it and you could be bored in less than a week or two, it's my opinion but after all the negative posting you normally make I for one thought you'd do more research ;)

Honestly, try the demo before the game, and I am not impressed.

Back to GRID & ARMA2/ OFP-DR...... for spring/ summer

like I said last year, I'm only budgeting for 3-4 games max and HAWX is not going to be one.

From the horses mouth, the feedback thread of ubisoft re the DEMO HAWX

Scanning the first 3 or 4 pages posts there, if you remove the tech issues that will hopefully be addressed on release, and just look at the feedback on the game and graphics, it's being well received, a spattering of "awesome", and "enjoying".

same boat with Dannik....I have too many peripherals that will get infected/affected by installing SP3...just for a demo?

I tried it on PS3...and once again reminded why I don't play console anymore...

back to the ArMa learning curve.

You could argue the pros & cons of this game, but I have moved from pro to con after seeing it. The only good things are: it's new, graphics look great, there is fun to be had, that's it.

Cons: does not support multiple controls (joystick/ pedals etc), camera view is locked by Ubi, no landing or taking off, tech issues are multiple, arcade feel all over it, read some of the negative feedback from Ubi forums....

I've tried to be fair and pulled + & - posts.. as a sample

I love the demo so far and still working on mastering the expert assistance off mode. Currently I am using the Saitek Cyborg X joystick and have not had any problems other than there being a huge deadzone. Also I am not able to look around the cockpit with the hat. Im going to buy this game for sure. Hoping the Ubi will focus on the PC version a little more and fix some flaws.

Ok, this may grow into a separate post (I think it needs it before someone on the dev team may actually notice the issues I'm going to bring up later). Just a forewarning if it gets buried.

I just played the demo for 5 min, and if I had a physical CD of the game, I would've chucked it across the room. It's a solid port to the PC no doubt.. but unfortunately, Ubi appears completely inept at making a working control/interface scheme for a computer. The game was entirely unplayable on my system, and the controls did nothing but frustrate me.

Someone at Ubi needs to understand how PC games work before they even THINK about releasing this. All accuracy, camera mode, etc problems aside, they know NOTHING about a usable interface or control setup. The game simply requires 3 hands, because otherwise you can't use the camera control. Obviously the idea of a POV hat on a joystick is entirely lost on the dev team. Essentially, you either need a console style controller with a camera stick, or you need an extra hand to use the mouse and control your view. If ANYONE on the dev team had actually played a flight game before, this would've been a no-brainer, but it would seem these people have never TOUCHED an aircraft game before, let alone learn how to play it.

Oh, and don't expect to get rudder pedals working with this. I had mine hooked up.. and I wound up flying the plane entirely by tilting the pedals (which in a normal aircraft environment operates the wheel brakes). With the pedals in full neutral, I found myself spinning into the ground, because it was reading the PEDAL input instead of the STICK. My X52 stick and throttle became useless unless I manually held the pedals half way down. Sorry Ubi, I didn't spend the money on my X52 Pro just to wind up having to use a gamepad.

Obviously the console versions have their own issues, but the problems the PC version has are too numerous to mention right now, because I have work in the morning. Expect a very... lets say "exhaustive" description of what needs fixing, sometime tomorrow.

This game is NOT ready for the PC, by any means.

The game is fun, except for some issues.

1. The Assistant off camera view is looking great but it cause a confusion, specially when there are a lot of thing going on in the screen. The view also keep changing the camera angle resulting in more confusion, making it hard to control the plane. I'd very appreciate if I can get an option for cockpit view in assistant mode off or at least a far chase cam.

2. The controller sensitive is just not right for me, so it would be nice if there will be an option to adjust controller sensitive.

HAWX is a good game, but is not good enough to beats Ace Combats yet. Anyway I'll definitely buy this game when it's out! Nice Job Ubi! :wink2:

Read the whole thread and it's generally negative as the only positive elements are for GRAPHICS & CONSOLES.

I have noticed one thing about Ubi games since GR2 was first released. They really love the 3rd person view in games. I cannot think of one game made by RSE/Ubi that has not had a 3rd person view of some sort included in the game. This shows how far back Ubi is trying to turn back the clock on gaming. Why do they not just create a top down game and let it go at that? That is what it appears they are after.

I have also read of the complaints of the demo not even running with flight sticks (at least the X52) plugged in yet once unplugged, ran fine. One gamer had a flight stick, throttle quadrant and rudder pedals plugged in and couldn't use any of them (was that you Viiiper?).

And yes, this game is far from a simulation.

Just my 2 cents.

Might of been me. I cant have my joystick and rudder peddles plugged in at the same time if I want to play. But thank god my x-52 doesn't cause the problem some of the people are having with it. I think my trackIR works for it now Ill have to check it out in the morning and report back on that. Im hoping that they get the rudder peddles and joystick bug fixed.

Wow, that's odd that they would limit people to a specific service pack. I've never seen that requirement for a game before.

The real point that bugs me with this title (another with poor testing), is that they had ample time to sort out basic functions and control but still they failed to check some basic PC peripheral functions like rudder pedals. It's not that the rudder pedals would be used, it's the fact that people have to disconnect them to stop them messing up the game controls.

I'm I being unreasonable to ask that if peripherals that are plugged in and not used by the game that they are masked out? It's a basic flight game and flight games on the PC have a limited number of different peripheral types, like 1) joystick, 2) rudder pedals, 3) quadrant, 4) specialist keyboards like the game pads.

Other things like the POV (point of view) camera is pre locked by Ubisoft for each mode, what is all that about? go into advanced (assistance off) mode and your flying an airplane from a radio control point of view.

It's sad that console/ PC titles are becoming more console developments and ports to the PC platform but the devs are adamant that it was made specially for the PC.....

p.s.

I did post that I had to unplug my rudder pedals & quadrant to make the joystick function correctly, but still it's proportional moment was not linear.

This title slipped 6 months....

My X52 works but has HUGE (and I mean HUGE) deadspots. Literally the last 5mm of joystick movement is all that works.

Also Missiles randomly fire off which still happens with the X52 unplugged so I can only assume it's the Nostromo N52 doing that.

All this on top of the stupid view angle is a bit too much. I mean, how can a radio control viewpoint be the ADVANCED mode?

hmn? I never said i expected a sim, i'm expecting a flight action game with some new wrinkles to the Crimson Skies/Ace Combat/Rogue Suadron gameplay style.

WK, there are plenty, and what do you mean by 'turn back the clock'? It seams as if you're proposing any game design feature you don't agree with is archaic. Flight action games usually allow a 3rd person camera, a lot of people play them because they think the planes look cool.

Anyway it's obviously a console port, so if i check it out i'll check out the console version -- shame it's got those compatibility issues with the joysticks, stuff like that is the only real, objective quality issue ubisoft keeps having with their games.

well I play some TDM today, and I must say that it was actually really fun. I was in the 37 and so where most of my other team mates, against a f-22, another su-37 and a su-47 and we won! it was a blast! I never left the cockpit view and having trackIR working really helped out a lot in that view. Being able to look around and keep your eye on your target was really fun. Im probably going to have to get this one.

I think you may of miss read my post, I meant I normally never ever agree with you, but for once you seem to actually be posting that you would give the game a go as it sounds like fun. I for one found it to be a total console port, so I was in disagreement......

Any way, np I just thought I'd point that out and clear it up.
