MarkAm_i
Hello, I am looking for a shortcut to the latest and greatest in making GR movie making. The threads I found in searches were all quite old. Maybe I missed something. If it was not too complicated, I would like to make some short videos for youtube. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

MarkAm_i
LOL yes thanks, maybe I should mention that I have zero experience with any vid capturing.
wombat50
Fraps(the free version) is limited to 30 seconds at a time IIRC. The free version also watermarks a small "fraps" on the clips. Not a deal breaker as far as I'm concerned. Once installed you use assigned hotkeys to start and stop. Fraps exports clips to a destination of your choice and saves them in .avi format. Clips are huge in file size. Thats where Ulead Videostudio, Sony Vegas, or Adobe Premiere come in. Or if you are greedy for money and power like myself, use MS Moviemaker2. You can import the .avi clips into these programs, edit them, add music etc. and then export them in a file format of reasonable size. If you have XP with SP2 you have MS Moviemaker on your computer already. Some people have a time getting it to function at all. It always worked for me but is very buggy. Don't push the pace and save often. I made a few vids of GR and I guarantee, I'm strictly a novice so with a little reading to familiarize yourself with the programs, you'll be cranking out vids. MarkAm_i
Thanks wombat, yes free is what I need. Maybe that will change. First to see what it's like. I will look into MS movie maker, I have Vista, I hope I can find a good free program.
WhiteKnight77
Vista has a movie maker program too.
Cpl Ledanek
I'm still stuck at FREE...but, the program I saw much potential was Sony Vega.....too bad I missed the price drop at Office Depot when they were closing....maybe eBay is my way MovieMaker2 is the most simple...there are cool effects if you look in YouTube. Dannik
As an alternative to Fraps, Xfire will capture video, and I am fairly certain that it doesn't watermark.
GreyHaired
and if you need to convert the file, this is freeware too: http://www.erightsoft.net/SupCk2.html
Rocky
I forgot that fraps trial restrictions were so severe as to make it pretty useless for making GR movies. There was one other game capture tool out a few years ago that looked really promising but I can't find it with google. There's a chance it was mentioned in these forums but it's take a pretty clever search to find it, I'll see what I can find later on. Member Ben was one of the main movie makers, reading his posts might also enlighten. Edit > Found it! Gamecam.

Ben
Here are a couple of examples; 'Live recording': http://files.filefront.com/Castle+Day+Done...;/fileinfo.html http://files.filefront.com/Embassy+Done+Qu...;/fileinfo.html 'Match footage': http://files.filefront.com/Beyond+Reality+...;/fileinfo.html http://files.filefront.com/Feel+The+Rage/;...;/fileinfo.html http://files.filefront.com/Best+bits+from+...;/fileinfo.html 'Random / Atmosphere-ish' http://files.filefront.com/Ghost+Recon+For...;/fileinfo.html Or; http://downloads.vega-community.org/videos...ors_tribute.rar (500-600 mb) Excellent use of special effects and 3D stuff I'll list every fragmovie with some pictures and a description i uploaded to GRnet soon Applications: - Fraps to record 'what you see' to raw .avi files - VirtualDub to do some basic editting, and to convert the raw avi into a much smaller size (like mp3 for videos), for example 'divx' or 'xvid'. Alternatively (professional video-editting software); - Adobe Premiere - Sony Vegas If you're familiar with PhotoShop then Premiere is probably easier to 'get into', otherwise i'd suggest Vegas (pretty straightforward really). glhf Edited March 2, 2009 by Ben

chiles4
The last time I checked into GameCam, I found out that it does compression while recording...that's a no-no. You really want to do all your editing on full-quality footage and then output your work to a compressed codec. Fraps, the purchased version, is good for that. I use VirtualDub to edit. AFAIK, it's not really full-featured but it's free. I then use Super@ to output to a much, much smaller sized .avi. Super@ gives you a ton of choices regarding the quality/compression of the finished movie.
WhiteKnight77
I don't know why anyone hasn't thought or posted about RAD Game Tools. The have a free converter available.
pagey
I tried gamecam and didnt like the quality of the footage. Fraps is simple to use and make decent qlty footage..but yes limited to 30 secs... You have xfire so you might want to check it out too...Very easy. For editing you can start with Moviemaker or the program included with Vista.. I got Sony Vegas and i got to admit its a nice program but its a bit complicated if its all new to you. Still watching Ben's, Speedy's and Dox's work from time to time ...good memories... I still have replays from 03 to 07 to and live recording footage and got like 25mins done on that movie. I hope i can finish it one day. GL with your project Mark. seeyasoon. chiles4
One of the best made Ghost Recon movies is the one called "GR Forever" If I watch this, am I gonna get all...weepy? I find old screenies on my hard drive and so many memories come flooding back! Though I've been using VirtualDub for a long time, I gave Windows Movie Maker 2 a try and thought I was going to have to commit ritual suicide. VDub doesn't have transitions or other bells and whistles but it's extremely easy to edit with. You simply move the slider to your "cut start point" and hit the "start pointer" and then move the slider to the "cut end point" and hit the "end pointer" and then just hit the Delete key and you've cut out footage. The movie is displayed in front of you with a pointer to navigate to any frame. Editing is very fast and easy. There are a bunch of filters to choose from (brightness/contrast/HSV/sharpen/etc/etc and you can easily resize and crop. If you have the needed codec installed, you can do compression on the output as it processes and saves. And VDub is free.
Creatch
As I work on a mac I use differant programs. I use a program called capturescratch for the capture itself. I then convert using visualhub which will do sound and video. I then use Final Cut Pro for final edits. But then again I'm in school doing video and film editing so I have access to all the cool toys. But have fun and just keep plugging away. chiles4
I finally found a great place to host HD-style movies for anyone interested. It's vimeo.com. With a free account, you can upload one 1280x720 HD movie per week. To get some idea of what that looks like, feel free to watch my first "HD" movie. Unfortunately, it's not GR, it's Arma. Watch it full screen, HD on and Scaling off. Link is: http://www.vimeo.com/4231888 I may try to make a GR movie but there's not as much camera control and not as many "Hollywood" moments because it's a pure SF infantry game - not nearly as many jets, vehicles or gadgets. I'll record an entire GR mission and see what I come up with.
davros
Hi folks, I also use vimeo. It's great, even for SD videos. Here's a link to the a draft page on the "playpen" wiki (a staging ground for the maik graw2 wiki) that gives info. on what I use for my GRAW2 videos on the wiki (see my sig. link for examples). http://graw2-playpen.pbworks.com/Making-a-Tutorial-Video Hope that helps add to the discussion. Dav.
Rocky
The only issue with Vimeo is that they have a policy of deleting game videos They deleted all my movies. I recommend finding somewhere else. You tube does HD now.
