i hate computers !! that being said i just reformatted and when i go to run windows update (using millenium) it says there is a newer version of update so i d/l it, v1.4 i think it said. So i am thinking , kool this reformat has been problem-free...but now i can't use windows update...it just hangs and does nothing. It will say scanning for updates and goes to 33% showing 8 millenium updates on the left bar, no critical updates though which i know is bunk cause there are. Now at this point i click that link and windows updates opens again saying scanning for updates but it is not a new window but a window within a window :huh: . So then i click the option to browse the catalog for updates and get to where the new version of windows update is but i can only d/l it to hard drive. i click the link to read more about it b4 i d/l but the window that opens displays nothing. So what the hell i will d/l and it asks to where i wanna d/l it, but seeing as i couldn't read anymore 'bout the file i have no clue so i just d/l it to desktop and it shows as iuhist_catalog.xml

what do i do with it ? i open it and this is what i get

<?xml version="1.0" ?>

WinME is the biggest pile of crap I have ever seen. I've used win3.11, 95, 98, 98se, ME, and now XP, and by far ME was the worse. I had problems like yours all the time, as well as crashes that made no sense and it was a resource hog for no reason.

I really advise getting yourself a new copy of windows, preferably XP, but 98se or 2000 would be loads better than what you're going through.

i have never had a problem with ME in the last two years, just now...everyone always badmouths ME but it is always is good for me... besides i don't have $300 to buy a new OS . :(

Mac's cant be compared to Windows. Its an OS thing...Just pickup Linux and use it for a couple of days. I guarantee you'll be back to windows real fast. Just drop ME for crying out loud and get a real OS. ;)

I've used Windows from 3.11 right thru to XP now too and I also never had any significant problems with Win ME at all either. It never let me down or gave me any problems, rarely crashed and I certainly couldn't complain about it!! I actually found it one of the more stable and reliable OS's I have used!!

It really just goes to show and continues to reiterate the fact that it's often a case these days with such a massive and diverse range of differing products available out there that some hardware just conflicts with certain software and once it happens that's it, often the only fix is to change one or other!!

@ RooK,

Heh, I can see a flame war starting in the distance...just hope Stinger don't see this! :P

I've used 98SE and 2000PRO/Server - soon to try 2003 Server. Thought about going XP, but I just can't stand shortcuts to shortcuts with XP Home, and generally using an OS that insults my intelligence! Maybe XP Pro is a bit different, but I think 2K will be on my computer for awhile - atleast until LongHorn shows promise, or BlackComb becomes available.

Are you kidding DR? They'll get worse the newer the version, might as well hop in now and get XP :P Basicly what you do when you get XP is neuter it, take away all the helpful reminders and all the helpful services. Then it's just a stable and lovely running/gaming platform. Hell, look at Stinger, if he would have been using Win98 during all his experiments, $50 says it would have had a corrupted hdd or numurous BSODs.

BTW, if he didn't see it before, he sure will now ;)

Heh, yeah RooK, I was kidding. :lol: Still working on my sense of humor here. <_<

Hop in with the XP crowd? Riiiight. I have yet to see a Blue_Screen_Error or 0700000B issue with 2000. 98SE was a pile of crud, even more than ME I'd venture. Course, it was installed on a Pre-Fab... <_< Me thinks we need to start up a fund for Havok's new rig yes?
