Monitor Problems...

I know you flash firmware for things like Vid cards, Hdds, routers, but I am in a rather annoying position and am wondering if it is possible to flash the firmware on a monitor. I own a Asus X203w and I have a problem. I use this monitor for both my PS3 and my PC, but I have an issue. The default resolution is 1680 x 1050 (Same Aspect Ratio as 1280 x 800). This monitor is 16:10 and will not scale per different resolutions. This is REALLY a problem on the PS3 seeing that I would LIKE to use this monitor at the correct aspect ratio. Everything is tall and skinny.

Ok, question: I know that people flash their monitor bios but HOW do I do that, and HOW do I find/create/edit custom firmware to flash the monitor with. Basically I just want the monitor to scale with fixed aspect ratio.... Thanks.

No dice, WK. Already tried that man, and that wouldn't fix the problems with the PS3 either. I know that it's possible Rocky, I just don't know how... VERY few people that I've seen know how to flash a monitor. I figured only Firefly or Dannik might be able to POSSIBLY help... lol They are the GRNET tech gods. :notworthy:

Now that I think I know the problem, it's a driver issue. I know how to quickly fix it for ATI drivers, but if the PS3 is being plugged directly into the monitor, I've been through that monitor's user manual, and there doesn't seem to be settings for forcing aspect ratios or scaling.

For ATI video cards, using the Catalyst Control Center (Advanced mode), connected using the DVI plug:

Open CCC -> Select "Digital Panel (DVI)" from the left menu -> Attributes -> Check "Enable GPU Scaling" and then you have three options.

1. Maintain aspect ratio -> this means the video card will show you the original format format, so 4:3 sources will display as if the monitor was 4:3. Black bars to the left and right on smaller aspects than the display's native 14:10.

2. Scale image to full panel size -> this will stretch the image to fit the entire display. If your source isn't widescreen, you will get a fullscreen image that looks 'squashed' vertically. No black bars.

3. Use centered timings -> Your native resolution is 1680X1050. Showing 1280X1024 will result in only the center of the display showing, as your image is smaller vertically and horizontally. No scaling is done at all.

For nVidia cards, the process should be about the same, though the menus will be different.

Again, this only helps with signals that the video card processes. For the PS3, you would have to go through it's video setup menus to force resolutions. You should be able to force full 1080p, though it would be squashed slightly due to the monitor not being quite tall enough, pixel-wise.

Edit: To give a practical example of the three modes under Scaling, under mode 1, GR's menus would have black bars to the left and right, but be full height. In game, since widescreen is supported, you would get full screen, assuming you choose a WS aspect. For #2, the menus will be full screen, as will the game, but the menus would looks squashed, since they are fixed at 640x480. For #3, the menu would be a tiny 640x480 window floating in a sea of black in the middle of the screen, while the game would display the resolution you choose. If you choose less than 1680X1050 for in-game, you will get black banding on all sides.
