Ubisoft Readies £4m TV Campaign

Ubisoft is set to spend around £4m on TV advertisement campaigns in the UK to help expose its range of Wii and DS games this Christmas.

In particular, the upcoming Wii title Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party will see a £1m primetime TV campaign made up of a sequence of advertisements.

The remainder of that advertising budget will be used for an eclectic range of games which need to be targeted to different audiences. Recent release Far Cry 2, which has already sold over 1m copies worldwide, will see a number of TV spots emerge as the holiday season closes in, while a range of DS games will receive TV ads targeted at younger boys and girls.

"From now until Christmas we are targeting various different demographics. We are putting a sizeable chunk into TV ads given the current economic climate," says Ubisoft's UK marketing director Jon Rosenblatt.

Whiteknight is right, investing into their fastest growing market is ludicrous, they should instead be trying to fix all of the mistakes that led to those record profits.

but you know those wealthy executives, always got their heads in the sand...

Ubisoft got so wealthy by buying talented developement houses, heavily advertising established franchises and investing in graphics technology. There is no doubt that Ubisoft has been very successful. But not even you Sup can argue that Ubisoft is a publisher of quality games. They prefer Quantity of quality.

But things are changing. The head ###### at Ubisoft made a big thing about Far Cry 2 selling 1 million copies in 3 weeks. 1 million copies of a game released on 3 seperate formats in the prime selling season of the year. Thats actually not that good for a game that was so heavily advertised and hyped. I mean Fallout 3 sold 4.7 million copies in 1 week and GOW2 sold 2 million in 2 days, and that was on just one format.

Ubisoft is using a campaign of attrition, I don't think that will be as successful in the next few years as the it was in the previous 5.

I would and i wouldn't. They definitely due prefer quantity to quality as a business plan, and their Wii market is actually most indicative of that. Aside from raving rabbids 1 (a franchise theyve subsequently milked to death) i dont think they've released a single positively reviewed Wii game? They're making tons of money there.

That said, their triple a titles have all been very professionally produced and high quality. Both sales and reviews speak to the quality of Vegas, GRAW, Assasins Creed, Splinter Cell (although it got middling reviews with double agent, which honestly wasnt that good of a game), Farcry 2, Prince of Persia... Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft France, and Ubisoft Montreal are among the most professional quality developers in the world right now -- to have three under one corporate roof is a big deal; not to mention the other companies they've been acquiring, like RSE and recently that RTS developer who's name escapes me.

Do i agree with their fundamental design descisions, as a player? (making GRAW and Vegas into more action heavy shooters, for example?)

Not at all. Can i argue with the quality of the execution? No, these are incredible games, some of the best made action shooters released in the last five years.

There is no doubt that Ubisoft make high production games but asmost if not all of Ubisofts recent releases have been so buggy on many formats that they are nearly unplayable ( sometimes they actually arent playable as they wont load ) I think I can reasonably argue their quality of execution.

Vegas 2 had one big bug on console versions, i was lucky and didnt buy it anyway.

Farcry 2 has one big bug but is otherwise fine. What games do you mean when you say almost all recent releases? (not trying to disagree, i just honestly dont play that many games, and only on one platform, lately.)

Sup, take a walk over to the Ubi FC2 General Discussions forum and see the complaints that are being made. People not getting past a certain percentage of a level (though that may be an intentional bug by Ubi to keep pirates from enjoying the game, I don't know, and was even reported on here by Rocky). Games that wont load is another common complaint.

Ubi may be successful in creating games, but as of late, it appears all of the games that they have released are full of bugs and unplayable in some instances and people are tiring of it and voicing their dissatisfaction. So what if they ship 1 million in 3 weeks of FC2 on 3 platforms (didn't V2 ship more in that same time period?), but that does not mean that the game is a quality game.

As you can see, I am not the only one to question Ubi's commitment to quantity over quality.

Naturally, but that's where 80% percents of the complaint are going to be posted. Are they up over 500,000 yet?

The bug is definitely a big one and definitely shouldnt have slipped through, im not defending ubisoft, but you're blowing it way out of proportion. It is not a widespread error, it's happening in a few isolated cases.

You aren't, wk. I am too. That said, the people who have concluded they're a bad company are a very, very small portion of their userbase.

Or in your case, not really a portion at all -- how many recent ubisoft games that you judge so harshly have you played?

Given Endwar is a console only title at present using the All formats chart is a little misleading.

There is one thing that those lists show that you posted, they are all moving downhill. Endwar never even made it into the top ten from the looks of things. The link I posted does not specify what format it is so it is fair to believe that it is for all formats. If true, it actually tells one that it at least for FC2, it is on it's way down as word has gotten out that there are problems with it.

Notice too, that even the CEO is crowing about selling 1 million copies in 3 weeks when even Vegas 2 sold (or at least shipped) more in the same time frame. I thought FC2 was supposed to be the bigger AAA title according to everything everyone said on the FC2 forums.

as posted on ubi.com

and as I said they may well have sold more units, the chart only shows the games performance/ position in direct relation to other current/ new titles and let’s be realistic there are a lot of AAA titles at present to compete with so that position only shows they’re not as popular as many of those. It doesn’t show any many units were sold.

Do you not think a more popular title will sell more units? Games like CoD have a particular draw and do it very well. Ubi cannot even clone such success and it shows.

Really? I was pretty sure games like 'GRAW' had the same mass appeal...

Not every big game tops charts, whiteknight77. Ubisoft is a big company that makes a lot of games, and sells a lot of products in a lot of parts of the world. Their business is a bit more complex than 'Farcry 2 only made reasonable profits, instead of ridiculous profits!? oh ######, sell!!!!!!'
