Fletch
Just finished building my newest computer. Based on a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor on a MSI P45 Platinum (HC Edition) LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard w/ Tt V1 Cooler. It's running Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit and has 2ea G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066, a Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD7500AAKS 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive, SAPPHIRE 100243L Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card, 2ea SAMSUNG 20X DVD Burner Black SATA drives, and a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer 7.1. Powering this is a PC Power & Cooling PPCS750QBL Silencer 750W, and its all housed in a NZXT LEXA BlackLine Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case. I originally bought a Tuniq Tower 120 Universal CPU Cooler to put on it but it was to bulky and heavy. While it may have done a better job at cooling the V1 is keeping me at 40-45c between idle and load. (OC'ed to 3.4GHz) I have been loading up a lot of my old games and replaying them including all the GR games. I wish I had this when I first played these games. everything runs so smooth, no glitches or stalls. I guess when Warhead comes out I'll get to see if it is up to speed for the current stuff.. Rocky
It's the best part of building a new PC isn't it, installing your older games and watching them fly.
Forrester
I remember combat flight sims running so fast i couldn't hit anything.... nowadays most games adapt themselves to the speed avaliable....lol
Cpl Ledanek
Congrats Fletcher! is this your cooler? just want to clarify
Fletch
Yes thats it, right now as I type the computer has been on 10 minutes and the temps at 36c, in about an hour it will hit 44c and hold there till I put some stress on it. Fletch
Today the temps are slightly lower playing HALO and GR:AW/2, the highest it hit was 43c. Of all my games two so far are giving me problems with the Vista 64. GR:AW and Frontlines fuel of War, Frontlines won't play at all and GR:AW plays for about 10 to 15 minutes and forces a reboot. Its the only game that does that. GR:AW2 has no issues and the temp when it forces the reboot is no higher than any other time. Very strange, if it did that all the time I would suspect a hardware problem but since it only happens with GR:AW I believe it is software compatability issue. Fletch
OH no, seems I spoke to soon. The computer did the reboot thing again came up as far as the setup flash and then went blank. Since everything else still "Seemed to be on" I am guessing the video card died. I am going to go pick up a cheap one and see if that works, if not the local store says they can run a diagnoses for me for $40 and tell me exactly what went bad. I probably should just do that than waste the money on a test card but since I don't hace a PCI-E spare laying about I want to pick one up anyway. Wish me luck. Fletch
Well the Board Diagnostics seems to lean towards the CPU being Bad or not set correctly. It was set since it was working I guess it's a long shot that it came loose but my bets on it went bad for some reason. I think its time to take it to the Computer store where they have better testing equipment.
NoQuarter
Bad news but good luck tracking down the source! ____ Following the original completion of your build did you check or monitor the various voltages to the equipment with any software utility from MSI or AMD/ATI...to make sure everything was running stable; and/or did you over-clock anything? Fletch
I only used the readouts in the BIOS to check the voltages and I set the board to 1600fsb which OCed it to 3.40ghZ Edit: Just dropped it off at the store, they have better equipment than I do. Hopefully it won't be too many bad parts. Edited August 25, 2008 by Fletch
Fletch
I feel so embarassed, They called this morning and said nothing is wrong with it, This could drive me to drinking again, or banging my head against the wall. I think the computer hates me. Seriously, I checked all the connections and the mounts, I got no clue what I did wrong but they pulled it out of the case and ran it for 3 hours on the bench, so even though I could not find anything it had to be touching (grounding out??) something. If I am able to I'll pick it up after work today. Times like this I wish I had a bigger house so I could have a proper computer work area, The wife gets ###### when I have it spread out over the dining table trying to work on it. Cpl Ledanek
..... The wife gets ###### when I have it spread out over the dining table trying to work on it. ....I used to work on carpet until I got yelled at ...then on the hardwood floor...finally, IKEA moved in my neighborhood...got me a large desk/work table.... if not the table, you always have the floor
Fletch
You have quite the setup there, . I wish I had that much floor space. My whole condo is only 596sf and its jammed with the stuff of two peoples lives.

Fletch
ball is for my lowerback pain... Strangley enough my question is about the ball. I too have a bad back from a vehicle accident, hows does that work out for you? PS: that is 3 times more space than I have for my computer. Cpl Ledanek
ball is for my lowerback pain... Strangley enough my question is about the ball. I too have a bad back from a vehicle accident, hows does that work out for you? PS: that is 3 times more space than I have for my computer. Positives: the ball is actually great for my back, coz it keeps me from slouching, it helps my weak stomach muscle *beer gut*, strengthens my balance/core, very dynamic during those crazy fragging/intense/keyboard smashing, bouncy-bouncy burns calories, your entire body/mind is in check/alert (fall precaution), etc... Negatives hard to relax on those relaxing websites , hard to play racing games with steering/pedals due to unnatural position of your legs/spine, nothing to rest your elbows, took 3 tries to get the right height/size of ball (I'm 160lbs wet 5'7" using a medium ball) good luck on build and finding a ball (go to Marshalls/TJ Maxx its way cheaper in there than Wal-Marts/Sportsmart)
Fletch
Forgot to mention that The store called me last night and said that after they put it all back together they ran it all day to see if it would hold up on a longer test, and it did not. It started acting up after about 6/7 hours. I Made a big mistake with this board it seems. I also made a big mistake in that after I had it running for a little over a week with no problems I threw away all the product boxes and tags. I can't RMA the board since their policy states you must return it in the original box with all the stuff (parts/paperwork) that came with it. Expensive mistake. So I don't also have to buy new memory I asked them to see if they can get me an X48 board that can do 1600 on the FSB and using DDR2. If not then I'll use another P45 but a different brand. Also We don't have Marshall or TJ in Hawaii yet. Edited August 27, 2008 by Fletch
Fletch
Well the local store got me an ASUS P5E Deluxe X48 chipset board and I've installed it. Running for two days now with not a hiccup (crosses fingers ) and seems to be a very good board. When I was setting up the BIOS I found I had to make more choices then I did with the MSI board though. One choice it wanted was to Enable or Disable Vanderpool Technology. I was like ###### is that. I had to wiki it and read up on it to decide if I wanted to use it or if it would harm the system. In the end I disabled it. Another was you had to tell it what RAM you were using as for some reason it did not automatically detect it. The guy who sold me the board and several Web sites I had read on replacing a MB on an existing system all said you had to wipe the drive and do a clean install or more than likely the system would BSOD or give you major problems, so I set the BIOS to boot from CD and saved and exited expecting to wipe out the drive. For some reason it bypassed the CD and booted up normally and Vista then did a plug and Play on the new MB finding all the new stuff and requesting all the new drivers. I stuck the ASUS disk in the CD and it it updated everything and well here we are still running. (makes several offerings to the computer gods). Hopefully there will be no additional problem with this build and I can go on to other stuff.
