Rocky
My computer has developed a frustrating issue - every few minutes it is locking up i.e. no mouse movement, for a few seconds. When it does it, the HD light is on solid, so there is frantic disk activity at the time. I notice System Idle Process is at 99% all the time. No apps are running, I can be at desktop. I switched off indexing on all drives. I've ran CCleaner. Anyone any ideas?
Rocky
Woha I think I am onto it. I forgot to check Admin>Event Viewer. There's a HEAP of atapi errors in there, and yep, they all start at the same time the lockups started, earlier this evening! Atapi is apparantly the CD drive, perhaps the cabling. I have disconnect the cable (it's a SATA drive) and so far, not a single freeze. Now to figure out if it is the cable or the drive. The drive has hardly seen any use so it better not be the drive
Rocky
Well, there you go - a bad connection between your DVD drive and the mobo can cause your system to hang every 2 minutes, for 5 seconds.
CrowmanUK
is it the drive or the cable then mate? I had a weird one a while back that was causing odd lockups every few minutes, I never found what it was .
Rocky
I had spare stata cables lying around so I put one in and that was it. So I don't know if the other cable was faulty, or just not quite pushed fully home.
Dannik
I had the same issue a few years back. Turns out my CDRW had failed, and was taking it's IDE down with it. Disconnected it, and problem solved. Glad you got it sorted!
