Dedicated server listed but nobody can connect

Recommended Posts

I have my dedicated server listed on the UBI lobby but nobody can connect.

I read the other thread with a similiar problem and have done the following...

I have the Linksys Router:

Ports 2346 to 2348 forwarded

UDP and TCP and Enabled checked

I have the right internal address for that PC (192.168.1.101)

Port triggering has 2346-2350 for both incoming and outgoing.

DZM host is 192.168.1.0 <--can only change the 0 but not sure if I need to change?

Block WAN is disabled

Muticast enabled

IPsec and PPTP enabled

MTU enabled at 1492

Game settings:

I have tried checking and unchecking Behind Firewall

UBI deicated manager:

Tried Internet and Specified

I have no problem with Unreal Tournament so I cant seem to think it is a Router issue.

PS: I have no 16 yr old kid so no pressure...just frustrations lol

Cheers! :)

Have you tried to see if you can see your server on ASE or Gamespy? Ubi has alot of problems, and is a huge drain on the game and the PC.

If it shows there, then it is an ubi problem. Also, in Windows 98, the TCP/IP stack is built differently than it is in XP. Have you tried releasing and renewing the ip address?

If your ISP is set for DHCP, and your router for DHCP, chances are your ip address is changing once a day or so, and 98 isnt releasing and renewing all the time, so even having ports forwarded, the IP may have changed, and 98 isnt getting the forward.

IF you have more questions, you can IM me on MSN IM. We have gotten a few others up this way.

Check that stuff and let me know.

With a DHCP network, sometimes a pc will pull a different IP upon every reboot. This needs to be checked constantly unless you set your home network up static.

I have not tried those 2 sites no.

I just tried creating game on the 98 without the use of UBI this time and on the XP I simply typed the external address in the Internet window where the favs are but still could not get in however thru the LAN I could.

I looked in all network settings and could not find any place that had any IP typed in....not sure how to release as you say also.

My IP remains the same as long as my router is powered on.

Very strange....it's like there is sumthin in the game settings I am missing?

Unreal Tournament works fine thru ports 7777 and I simply added 2346 in the forwarding for GR and since my XP works as a server that tells me that there is not problem with my ISP or my router.

Thanks for the reply/help thus far :)

What sounds like happened, since you can get in through the LAN, but not internet, is this. Your internal IP has changed, and the ports you forwarded to the IP are now being forwarded somewhere else because your 98 machine IP has changed.

What you need to do now is open a DOS window on your 98 machine and type in IPCONFIG.

This will tell you what the 98 machine IP is, and then you need to go into the router and make sure that that is the IP your ports are being forwarded to.

98 will pull a new IP everytime its rebooted and everytime the DHCP lease runs out, so this will need to be checked everytime you want to play to make sure port forwarding is correct. THe only way to avoid this is to set your internal LAN up as a statically addressed network.

Remember that Unreal works fine!

IP is still at 192.168.1.101 and that is where I have the Port 2346 forwarded.

I have C: not shared but even tried sharing.

If I was to use a different port say 7777 instead of 2346 would people still get in or does the game insist on looking for that port only and force them to enter that in the IP they connect too in joining a game?

The reason I do not want to use my XP machine is that I just built it for my own use...this is a dedicated server I am trying to run on a PC that is not used and I dont use it because my XP PC is twice as good :)

I am at the point where I might just format and reinstall 98 and then just install the Game only and see if that works....lol.

Cheers

Something is keeping it from being seen outside the network on those ports if the other games work fine. You dont have something in the router set right.. can you connect to the pc and play GR using your lan? If so, the problem is in the router. Have you tried, just for diagnosis, putting the machine in the DMZ and seeing if it can be seen that way? If it can, then the problem is in your router settings for that IP address, specifically the port forwarding section.

What router model, and what firmware version? Is it a DHCP network, or static, or both?

Your problem here is definitely a networking issue, either in the router settings for that PC, or the Network stack on the PC itself. A windows reload is excessive for this problem, and probably wont solve it.

And one other thing. Win98 has no security to speak of, and certainly no file level security. You do NOT ever want to share your C drive.

And no, GR needs ports 2346-2348. It wont look at any others, and other users machines wont look to the other ports for a game.

Well the fix was as strange as the poblem itself.

I had setup first 2 lines in forwarding as:

2346-2348 to 192.168.100

2346-2348 to 192.168.101

All I did was delete those to lines back to default and just entered

2346-2348 to 192.168.101

and now it works...no more :wall: cause my head hurts :P

I guess there was just a small glich in the router.

Thanks for the help Phantom!
