Is a Phenom processor compatible with my mobo?

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question. I need to be sure before ordering one so here goes: I have an ASUS M2N4 SLI chipset with a Socket AM2 for the processor. I'm currently running an AMD Athlon 64 AM2 X2 (6400+) off the Socket AM2. Will an AMD Phenom 64 processor be compatible with my mobo?

Probably a stupid question, but like I said, I need to be sure. The manual says my mobo can take the standard 64's and FX's, Athlon 64's and FX's and Semprons (Phenoms weren't out at the time I built my rig.) But as my current processor uses Socket AM2, I'm assuming Phenom Socket AM2's would also work?

Think I just answered my own question by doing some research - it looks like my mobo won't be compatible with a Phenom processor as Phenom's actually use Socket AM2+ not AM2 (but it's still 940 pin)

Nice to see somebody managed to use google :rofl:

Upgrades ? it's like you got a big payout from Uncle Sam

Yeah, he sent money to me over the Atlantic ocean (I'm in the UK at the moment) :ph34r:

I need a big pay out, if you're offering - it will enable me to afford go to Summer Angel in Denmark this summer (to see a certain music artist who will be performing there on 25th July 2008). :whistle:

Google? What's that? :huh::rofl:

Actually, your mobo might be compatible with Phenom processors. My Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe is with a BIOS update. Yours might be the same way. The thing about it is that 1) It won't be as fast as in a AM2+ board (HT is lower), and 2) No Phenom out there is worth upgrading for over a X2 6400+ (I have one also). At least from a gaming stand point. If you do more, like video editing, rendering, things like that then it's worth it, but right now I'd wait until there's at least a 2.8GHz Phenom.

EDIT: After looking on ASUS website about your board (M2N4-SLI, right?), there is a BIOS update, but nobody seems to know what it all does. And it doesn't seem to support the Phenom CPUs, so you're out of luck there. Here's a list of motherboards at Newegg that are AM2+ boards though, and they're really not that expensive.

One of these could allow you to upgrade your motherboard first, followed by a Phenom CPU later down the road. Of course, you if you're going to buy a new CPU and motherboard you might as well go with Intel.

Edit: I guess I should use google myself before posting. I was under the impression that all the am2 boards should work with phenom but I was mistaken it looks like.

It's probably better to use am2+ boards with them anyways as the fsb is higher then the standard am2 boards.
