Guest
Hey all, after playing IL2 for a while, I'm looking at getting into a jet cockpit to see how good I am at doing that. I've read up a little on some of the sims out right now, and trying to find out which is better. Anyone have any suggestions? Here are things I'm looking for... 1. Something easy enough that I can learn how to fly fairly quickly and don't need a pilot's liscense to learn. I don't have the time to figure out every single button. 2. IL2 had it best with all the different switches that you can flip to set the difficulty level, or level of realism. I'd like to start off as a beginner just enjoying flying, then get to the hard stuff later. 2. As much as I hate to say it, graphics/scenery are a big deal to me with flight sims. If I don't feel like I'm flying in a real place, it just doesn't interest me. Again, IL2 was pretty good with all the different maps you could fly. Malleus
Sounds like Lock On: Modern Air Combat would be a worthy candidate for you. It's not uber realistic, but still a "simulation" by all means. You can learn the basics relatively fast, though it takes time to become good at it. You cannot set difficulty level like that though, it only has some basic options. The graphics are really great in that one, if you have the computer for it - strong CPU recommended.
Guest
So, if I can run GRAW2 with little problems, I can run this with none, right?
Malleus
Uhh, it's more complicated than that. What's your PC specs? EDIT: Anyway, I have a P4 Prescott 3.0GHz CPU, and can play GRAW2 at 20-25 fps. My fps values in Lock On can range from 8 to 80 so ... so it's complicated. The vanilla Lock On which can be patched up to 1.02 runs fine, unless there are a big number of units in the mission. The addon (Lock On: Flaming Cliffs, adds the Su-25T as flyable among other minor fixes) has improved flight models (and a very realistic flight model for the SU-25T), therefore it's more demanding in CPU. Flying the 25T in crowded missions can be at 10-15 fps, without turning on the optical targeting system which decreases the fps even more. It's hell. But I think the vanilla version should work fine for you, and it's enough if you just want to try the game. If you like it, then you can (and should) go for the addon too. WhiteKnight77
If you don't mind civilian aircraft, Microsoft's Flight Simulator is great and of course, it can be modded. If you can find it, FS 2004 still has many mods coming out for it daily and has lots of great freeware aircraft along with some awesome payware planes (the PMDG 737NG is one of them). You get both prop and jet aircraft from fighter to general aviation to civil aviation. It's easy to fly if ya ask me and if you can land without flipping over in iL2, you can with FS. Take a look at my website and in the gallery I have a section for FS. Three of the planes are freeware and the ATA flight is a payware plane with freeware scenery.
