Well a few days ago I was browsing on you tube and saw somebodies ghillie suit. So I thought to myself " I am doing that." Immediately after, I went on google and found a great tutorial on how to make one.

I went out and got my materials and got started on the long boring process of pulling out strands of the burlap. After the first 2.5 hours this was what I had done.

( the first hour and a half was very slow, then I found a faster way) Thats 6 18x22 squares. I've still got 7 yards left. But I don't plan on shredding it all. Maybe 2/3 or so. Heres my dye

You think I should dye all my burlap before I finish shredding, one color at a time, or after I've shredded it all? Input would be appreciated.

Though I didn't held a sniper rifle in my unit in the german federal armed forces we made one like that with the same technique for training purposes...and learning to lay still with your G36 and try discover other "ghillied up" comrades.

Was fun, though we didn't got to keep them - we dismantled them afterwards.

Go for one color at a time, this way when you put in another color you have a better feeling what is needed there and you can build in a certain camouflage matching to some bushes you see in the distance.

Well, not sure how to do the dyeing process, but just keep in mind that the colors/textures and such aren't as random as they look. You may already know this, but there's a rhyme and reason for every color and shade in a camo pattern.

---UPDATE---

I ought to be dying it this weekend. I'll try to get some pictures.

Not a good idea to wish that upon yourself. I think you mean:

Dyeing

The process of imparting colour to a textile material in loose fibre, yarn, cloth or garment form by treatment with a dye.

I finished my rifle wrap (Yay) and I got some pictures for you. Camera kinda dampens the awesomeness of it though. =/

I'm still trying to finish my suit itself. I just got the net today so were getting close to being done. =D

  • 3 weeks later...

Yea from what I gathered so far.

Fun project.

Keep it real man, makes for better photos. That attention to detail stuff.

Not sure how the scouts do it here but im sure there are awsome guides online from soldiers. Mimicking natural foliage in size shape and color... then like a 60%burlap and 40%foliage thing

I personally would just use a good mix of burlap and hair and stuff i find at a military surplus store

Cool little project you got here.

I think you should try adding more leaves and long grass, maybe some bits of hey to the ghillie, coz it looks way more like a ripped up piece of carpet to me.. But keep trying and keep changing it, till its perfect.

Add only the leaves and grass for where it will be suitable for the "job".

It's been a while since my last update. I've got the pants netted, and the jackets totally done, but I'll wait until my whole suit is finished before I post pictures. I heard something about washing the suit, so it looks more natural, but I'm worried the shoe goo wont stick well after that. I might try just hosing it.

CO, great project! Looks like a lot of fun!

A little advice on the helmet. Remember, the head is the most distinguishable part of the human body. Our eyes are trained to look for it first because of it's shape and curves that aren't really found in nature. Use sticks, leaves, etc. to break up the outline. That is the point after all, of camouflage - to conceal using color, and to break up the outline of what's being concealed. Also too, don't be afraid to dull your rifle. A good ghillie can be destroyed by a reflection off your rifle.

As a Scout, we don't use ghillies (I'm mounted Cav anyway). But, I'll talk to some of the guys from the Sniper platoon and see if they've got any advice for you (won't be able to report until June 1, but better than nothing). :)

Good work, keep us posted!

Keep in mind I'll be releasing a tutorial video after I'm finished. Hopefully it won't suck a mouthful of eggs.

New pics. I got out this weekend to test it a bit. I loaded it up with some natural vegetation and tried to sneak up on some guys chopping up fire wood. I almost got em too, but one guy saw me moving and pointed me out. But the guys he was workin on looked straight at me and couldn't tell. I didn't have the pants on either. Heh.

Anyway, find it.
