My rig has this under the hood:

P4 2.53ghz

512 Mb RAM

ASUS P4s8x mobo with 533mhz fsb

GForce4 8x Ti4200 video card

Phillips Lightframe2 107T 17" tube monitor

When I installed GR/DS/IT I was able to run it lag free at 1280x1024, but some months later and after using some mods, the screen would go blank in game and tell me the 'frequency is out of range'. After going into the options and lowering to 1024x768 the visual diference is minor but the game works. Had the same problem with other games. Vietcong Demo worked at 1280x1024, but the retail had to be lowered. Worst of all was GTA3 which absolutely requires hi-res and a few points really make the difference. I tried upping that one and even the menu screen showed up black with a box reading 'frequency out of range'. Because I couldn't even see and navigate my way around the menus to lower the setting, I had to reinstall the whole game.

With my crash hot system, I should be able to run all the way up to 1600x1200 on some games without lag. Is there anyway to configure the system or is my monitor the problem?

Just for our info, what nVidia Driver Version are you running for your Ti? (In Display Properties box, go to Settings Tab, click Advanced, find your Ti4200 Tab, and look in the lower dialog box. It will say something like this: 6.13.10.41.09)

Also check your "Refresh Frequency" to make sure it didn't get screwed. It really depends on your monitor, but typically anything higher than 85Hz is considered "too high".

This sounds more like a monitor problem than a system problem. It sounds like your video card isnt getting what it wants from the monitor.

What are your monitor specs, and what are you running it at?

Ie....the refresh rate, resolution, and color depth, and how old is the monitor? Has it recently started whistling or making humming noises?

@ Phantom - Dunno about refresh rates. Where can I find them? if i lower the refresh rate on the monitor can I get highre resolutions out of my games?

@ Ranger - where can I find display properties? I really don't know much about computers.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Anywhere on your desktop, right click then select Properties. You will then be at your desktop properties and select the settings tab. Click on advanced properties. That should bring you up to your video card control panel and can find the monitor tab where you can set the refresh rate of your monitor. There should be other tabs that you can make changes to if needed.

Gonna look into it when I get home tonite. What are the ideal screen and display settings to run at higher resolutions? BTW at time of press GR works fine in higher res (max is only 1280x1024), but for the sake of my other games, I still need to know.

thanx again

Most games, its probably 1024X768. Older games, its 800X600 max. Color depth isnt an issue as far as the monitor is concerned. THat depends on how much RAM is on your video card. Your card will run 32 bit color depth easily. I run my monitor at 1024X768@85hertz. Thats about the mid point for my monitor. The higher and faster you run the monitor, the shorter lived it will be. It's very easy to burn out the gun inside if you run it to fast.

Just make sure that whatever you choose, you dont exceed the monitor specs. It isnt smart enough to cut the video card off. It will run at whatever the video card tells it too.

Mine did that at one point for some strange reason too lol!! I have the exact same spec card as you but certainly in my case it wasn't related to the graphics card as another post also says above in my case either! Obviously this may or may not work for you and you may have to dig deeper using the good advise others have left here, but it certainly sorted mine out in seconds thankfully :)!!

For some reason my H and V (Horizontal and Vertical) Positioning and Sizing had decided to adjust itself lol!! It looked perfectly normal on the Desktop, but once I started any game the monitor would black and I'd get a floating box saying "frequency is out of range" as you describe!!

I sorted it by using the monitor options, not the cards Display properties. Hopefully you've got some buttons on your monitor that you can call up certain functions with!!! Go into them and if you have one find, the "Recall" option or similarly named and use it, that will reset the monitor completely to factory settings!

Then use the other options like the horizontal and vertical and resizing to stretch the display area back out to the edges of the screen and use the positioning to keep it central till it's fully stretched and fully central!! You will also have to re-adjust the brightness and contrast you may have altered as well as they too will have been changed!!

Hope that's of more help if other avenues haven't worked out so far :)!
