Starcraft Ghost- not so cancelled

Other than the next Metal Gear title, there wasn't a game that I looked forward to as much as Starcraft Ghost. Starcraft is still on my system and runs like glass, even under 64 bit Vista. Well it looks like it still may be coming.

Item #417 in the "Starcraft Ghost isn't dead yet" files: speaking with MTV, Blizzard's Frank Pearce says that while the company's attention has turned in recent months (well...years) towards some more high-profile titles, Ghost is not, and never was, cancelled:

It never was technically canceled. It's just a focus thing for us right now. We've got a finite amount of development resources and a lot of different things that we want to focus on so there's always the possibility, but right now we're spending our time on "World of Warcraft" and our expansion "Wrath of the Lich King" and "StarCraft II.

So when one or two of those products ship, you can all get back to badgering Blizzard about bringing back Ghost. Or Diablo III. Actually, you'll probably find the time to badger about both.

Blizzard explains the status, sort of, here:

Yep, I was really looking forward to Ghost too ... since it was slated to come out for the first Xbox! Only thing that bugged me was there was no PC version planned. Glad to hear it's not totally canned.

It seemed to combine the best elements of 2 best-selling 3rd-person adventure titles: Tomb Raider and Splinter Cell.

However, I wonder if it suffered from the same feature-creep as say ... Duke Nukem. I still applaud Blizzard for not releasing a game they would not be totally happy with (as opposed to certain other game publishers discussed around here ;))

Can't remember if this was posted before, but here was the original cinematic opening for Ghost:

Two studios were contracted by Blizzard to work on it. I think the title was also pulled because it was right before the next gen launched and Blizzard rightly did not want to launch what could be a flagship title on last gen consoles.

The Starcraft books - only one of which is a Starcraft Ghost novel - are very gritty and harsh. In other words, just the right tone. But some of the game was looking less serious. I don't think that was the route Blizzard wanted to go.

Microsoft made that mistake with Perfect Dark. The 2 Grek Rucka novels are dark and delve into corporate espionage and assassination but the game came off like more of a cartoon style romp. Hopefully that game will right itself in the next iteration also.

I hope Blizzard does this in house and tightens down on the approach for a more dangerous and adult tone.

@CR6, I have the original of that movie - actually I have all of them and that moment at the 2:15 mark when the Marines are talking Smack and Nova leans forward an looks at them and they freeze is the perfect attitude. Ghosts are extremely rare and very dangerous soldiers. It was the best moment in that cinematic.

Looks interesting, and having never followed the game, I had to google..

Wiki had this tidbit from last week

During a presentation at DICE 2/7/2008 in Las Vegas, Blizzard shared a slide with a list of cancelled projects which did not include StarCraft: Ghost. When asked about the situation, Blizzard co-founder and senior VP Frank Pearce responded: “Yeah, we’re still in denial about that one.”

Sweet. Thanks for the link HF!

You probably know Blizzard bought over the 2nd studio working on Ghost (Swinging Ape) so any further development will be all done in-house. With Blizzard pretty much becoming a publisher after the merger with Activision, they should have all the resources they need.

Anyone here remember that Blizzard was rumored to be also working on a first-person shooter set in the SC universe, and some guy who quit Blizzard leaked out some convincing screenshots, but of course all that was officially denied ...
