Questions...

Recommended Posts

First of all, I ask your forgiveness in asking, what will be to many of you, really stupid questions. But this is what forums are for, so I am simply taking advantage of the tools available.

A brief history... it was my brother who turned me onto GR II a few years ago. We were playing on XBox. I heard, and read, stories about GR I and the people who played it... but all the great stories involved PC players. Fast forward a few years... it is now 2008 and I am sick to death of the majority of players on 360... sick to death of waiting for new map packs promised 3 month's ago... sick to death of reading about this mod or that mod that makes the original GR the most amazing game ever... all these years later, no less...

Playing style... I believe in playing this game as tactfully as possible. I like to believe it should be played as if you were actually immersed in the missions or recon's... hence one of my complaints about playing with all the pre-teens on XBox live. I have been able to find some good people who share similar playing styles and we have had some great and really intense games over the years. The problem is that most of them are so tired of GR:AW that they have moved on to other games.

Now, to my questions... if I were to get set up for GR on the computer... how far behind would I be? I have read about what seems like thousands of Mods made for the game... which ones would be essential? Is there one place to get them all? Is the community of GR players as good as I have heard/read? Do you guys really get into intense, tactical play? If someone were playing GR I and preferred being a sniper, would that person actually get to perform like a sniper w/out being vilified for camping?

Finally... if one were so inclined to go through all the stuff necessary to play GR I... buying/downloading the game, downloading all the Mods... is the community still strong enough that it would be time well spent... or are there like only 100 folks who still play the game and actually connecting with them would be a major pain the ***?

Lot of questions, I know. And I'm certain most of you can tell I have thousands of more questions, but for the time being I'll leave it at that. I have no idea what the forum is like here on GR I, I know the forum on the 360 side is pretty darn good. I understand the need on some forums for people to be comedians... but I would sincerely appreciate anyone who can offer some good, honest answers.

Welcome to the GR PC forums Dr Death,

I didnt see the first "stupid "question in your post.I saw some I cant answer, pretaining to number of players, but I will strongly say that I dont think it would be a "waste of time" to get GRed up,and have a go at it.

I cant speak for PvP/TvT play, and how many players you might be able to find,as Im a Co-op gamer. If you are interested in Co-op gaming, there is but one place/server to connect to,IMHO,which is Alpha Squads puplic GR server. You'll need "Teamspeak" and a few mods to be able to connect, plus the password, which can be found by reading their rules here http://alpha.websmart.ro/forums/index.php?topic=277.0

The mods needed to play there, can be found in the download section here at GR.net. I see players daily on their server, which is very orderly and "tactical". If you have any more questions feel free to ask ,folks around here are friendly and helpful. I hope you do give GR a try, then maybe you'll understand why this "old" game is still clicking along and is still a lot of fun to play for a lot of us.

is the community still strong enough that it would be time well spent...

Looks like it is getting hot again in the GR1 modding topics and so. Plenty of new stuff to come, probably a lot of stuff for you to see.

Have some means of seeing the servers up, x-fire is good. UBI still going along. As above, AS Server is a good start to some good games.

I understand the need on some forums for people to be comedians...

Welcome

welcome Dr Death...lots of "needed" mods right here in the downloads section and there are those who always seem to find the long lost mod somewhere in their storage media...I'd say if you're looking for tactical co-op I think you'll find there are still people (teams) playing online in that mode...have a look at the upcoming Sniper Tourney mod that is being put together by Lightspeed, niccola, and others...from what you stated above it might be something of interest to you...

http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php...st&p=500202

that is but one of several mods in development right now and of course there are all those wonderful mods from days gone by and just recently released...you can play as an operator for many different countries and units....then again, you still have three RSE campaigns to wade through as yet!

Definitely worth the learning curve IMO...some of us found ourselves in the after action screen within around 1-2 mins the first time we played the original SP campaign..but after you have some success I suspect you'll be hopelessly hooked on GR and ready to hop into some of that online action you seem to long for...

strange how no one seemed to notice this so I'll take this one:

If someone were playing GR I and preferred being a sniper, would that person actually get to perform like a sniper w/out being vilified for camping?

no. you wont get vilified as a camper(for various reasons). It's pretty certain that in GR1(even without mods), a sniper wont last for more than a minute or two if he doesnt make proper use of that rifle and ghillie suit.

I am new here as well and looking forward to eventually getting online with GR.

I am a console gamer, and Ghost Recon is without a doubt my favorite game of all time.

I have mastered GR and GR:IT for my xbox (still play them on the 360), but I craved more missions, more tasks, more, more, more. Nothing compares, all the other games are arcade style compared to the brilliance of GR.

I tried the sequels, and frankly they are utter garbage. I like the open nature, the ability to control any party member, the reticle-only view (no gun view), and everything else about GR.

I finally took the plunge yesterday and ordered a cable to hook my laptop up to my hi-def lcd tv, a copy of GR Gold edition for the pc, and a logitech rumble-pad that looks exactly like a playstation 2 controller.

I look forward to getting it installed and getting some mods for it, and I will most definitely need you guys' help with that as I am a computer dummy.

And then hopefully I can join in with some online players and improve my skills even more. Playing elite is one thing, playing against another cunning, intelligent, experienced human being will be quite another I'm sure and I'm looking forward to being a noob again and taking some hard knocks.

As to the op's question about sniping, I'm sure no one will have a problem with it. GR is not like other games, it is very tactical and realistic. Snipers are just as vulnerable as any one else. A little patience, watching for barrel-flash, and a well placed grenade or rocket will take a sniper out.

Man I can't wait to get it and get some mods.

sup Death welcome to the home of GR -

I feel the beginnnings of a resurgence in [Ghost Recon] to be honest - all the other games out there just don't live up to expectation and I think its a matter of time before we see some heavy COOP action for [GR]. Some new mods in the works at present with over 20 missions being built for just one of them at present.

so I think it would be worthwhile - and with this site here you can put down GR for a while if you so choose, and when ur ready pick it up again and play some more of the multitude of campaigns out there.

if Sniping is your thing - there are a few of us currently working on a 2 player team Sniper Tournament - not team v team but realistic mission based competitions.

there is so much to GRPC - if you don't pick it up you have missed the greatest game ever made. period.

Yeah, if you want you may find more info about this sniper + spotter tournament here.

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions. I posted this a couple of days ago, then as life is... got very busy. Nice to come back and see some in depth answers and helpful advice. The GR community is pretty special. I especially liked what Mark2000 says... and I will investigate this Sniper tournament.

Once again, thank you all for the answers/help! Very much appreciated!

You guys are right about the re-surgence. There just isn't anything else to take its place. I just re-installed the original (lost all my mods when my hard-drive failed) and played for the first time in probably a year. Caves.

I was pretty good. Tactical, slow going, moved up, remembered the general feel of the board, set up a pincher on the campsite....

Then I lost one team member on the assault of the camp. I lost 2 more in the woods by the shed. Left me with a sniper and a 2-man escort team for Papashvilhi. Lost another in the woods during extract. Lost the sniper at the LZ. Finished the mission with one surviving member escorting Papashvilhi...

Talk about a rude awakening.... Nothing on the Xbox 360 compares.

Ghost Recon - PC. The best game ever.

Hey Dr Death

I think we can answer all your questions with one piece of advise, reading your post and the vibe for what you are after, the answer is "yes, you most certainly do want to install GR, DS and IT". GR and it's two expansion packs offer just about the best value for money as far as gaming goes right now, thanks to the wealth of awesome mods, and the community.

Hello and welcome to the best game ever and the best place for info and help for that game.

I think you will find that everyone here has a passion for this game. Yes passion. Alot of us here have been playing this game for 6 yrs and still play it over the newer and so called better games or versions of GR.

I can say for the re surgance of GR it is true. At our Alpha Squad public server we have seen over the last month quite a rise in the number of players in the server. And again thanks to the guys at TEK for helping out with a huge donation and keeping the server running.

On the weekends I have seen anywhere from 6 to 12 playing on a now somewhat regular basis and now the number of players during the week have risin as well.

If you were to ask why I would simply say it is due to the fact that the game industry dropped the ball after not realising the potential of this game and what could have and should have been done to fully exploite its possabilitys

and a wee bit o forsight.

The community here with the modders and scripters did however see the potential and went for the gold. We figured out things I don't think any of the dev's could have immagined or thought possable.

Is it worth the few bucks to get this game ? YES

Is it worth playing a 6yr old game ? YES

Will you as well find this to be the best tac sim to date ? YES

Will you like rest of us find yourself leaning in your chair trying to peek a corner or jumping right out of it ? YES YES YES.

Hope that helps.

The way it's ment to be played

What wombat said if you like a bit of

We do require TS, but having a mic is optional. Just being able to hear the Team Leader is really critical playing missions successfully. Keyboard communication is usually sufficient for reporting contact and the like. There are a significant number of people from the EU that have been using the server lately, so you will often find people on in the mid-late afternoon EST, as well as in the evening. We happily welcome anyone who is willing to stick to the server rules, there are a few missions that are tough on people with low-bandwidth links, but they can be avoided to accommodate everyone easily.

Hope we see you soon.

I finally took the plunge yesterday and ordered a cable to hook my laptop up to my hi-def lcd tv, a copy of GR Gold edition for the pc, and a logitech rumble-pad that looks exactly like a playstation 2 controller.

You might need to research the use of controller with GR. I tried to get it to work the other weekend and I couldn't get it to work. We had some youth over from church the other weekend and they wanted to try ghost recon but some had issues with the keyboard and mouse so I tried to set up a pc usb controller for them and I couldn't figure out how to remap the keys to the controller.

Let me know though if you are able to get it to work. You'll also have to tell me how the set up with your HDTV looks as well. I'm trying to decide at the moment whether to get a nice 24" monitor or a 32" hd lcd tv that I can hook my pc to for only about an extra $100.

I'd go for the TV because of its obvious other use - watching tv

I am living in the caribbean right now (sint maarten) because my wife is going to med school. I bought a 32" lcd high-def Olevia tv because I didn't want to go overboard only being here ~2 years. I have been pleasantly surprised. 32" is actually a really good size for a wide screen high def tv.

As for the controller, doing some research on here apparently the logitech wingman works, I bought a very similar logitech that is like a ps2 controller so I am hoping for the best. We'll see.

I had the stuff shipped to my parents house, and then they have to FedEx it here, so it will probably be another 2 weeks or so.

Until then, [Ghost Recon] on my xbox 360 Does anyone know of any major differences between xbox ghost recon and pc ghost recon?

Whats the resolution of the 32" TV ?

I play on a 24" wide monitor with 1900 x 1200 and GR looks great.

Well the resolution on the 24" monitor i'm looking at is the same, but that is why I would go with the LCD tv. It's usually only a resolution of 1366x768 which means less strain on my video card, but it means I can play games at the tv's native resolution. It would be tough on my 7600gt to play some of the newer games at 1920x1200. Plus if I get a tv I have more hook ups and even a HD tuner built in on some models.

I was looking at a 32" Olevia Will as well. I think I'd rather go with a smaller screen like that because it seems like if you go any bigger standard definition cable gets really stretched out. They had a nice 32" olevia at circuit city over the holidays for around $450 or so.

I'll have to check the software that came with my controller to see if I can reprogram keyboard keys through that. I'm not even sure what brand the controller is. It came free with my video card when I built my PC last year.
