Alderei
GRAW "set battles" or [GR] "Recon"? Obviously we all gripe about the loss of reconnaissance in the Advanced Warfighter series. In fact, there are opportunities for recon, but you are basically reconning a section of the map, to prepare for an engagement. This is different (decidedly so) from [GR], where you could recon the whole map before planning your assault, if you were clever about it. One "unrealistic" factor to GRAW's "platformesque" style is that the enemies do not respond to comabt if its outside of their area of patrol. For example, think on GRAW 1, the first mission, immediately after you coral your team you get to an area that has soldiers dropped off by two trucks. You take out the enemies, you blow up the trucks, and the three to four enemies on the next street act surprised when you show up! They didn't hear the explosions? The gun fire? I would rather see something similar to [GR] in terms of enemy spawning and reaction. If there is a big gunfight, nearby tangos should engage, not wait in their area. EXAMPLE: In the first mission of GRAW 2, when you assualt the artillery pieces, if one piece gets attacked, the enemies at the other should repsond to help out. You could use your team (why don't I have multiple teams?) to attack and draw the enemy away from your target, so that you could blow the artillery and then flank the opposition. I do think that the GRAW series nailed the idea of "set battle" engagements. Being able to hunker down, fight, manuever, and so on...it can be pretty intense. The "stairs" section of GRAW 2 and the Embassy of GRAW 1 are excellent examples. But I would like to be able to choose my setting for those engagements by forcing the enemy to attack me on my terms. Or ambushing them on my terms. That's Ghost Recon.
