Hey everybody. Our old projector screen tv's been on the blink for months now so we ordered an HD TV and it's comin the 15th of this month. I was wondering what the best video player is for an HDTV. We have a DVD player and are probably gonna stick with that for a while but I was wondering whether HD DVD is better or Blu Ray. I don't know much about electronics so I was hopin someone could help me out. Thanks.

So I take it there's still no winner in this "war" between blu-ray and hd-dvd. We get our HD TV in a little less than two weeks and I'm still trying to figure out which player to get. Until there's a winner, I think I'll just stick with the DVD player. Cause I don't wanna get a blu-ray player and then find out some movie I wanna get is coming out on HD DVD. Never knew movies would be like consoles and PCs. I'm with Colin on this one. Just waiting for one or the other to win so I can finally decide.

Yes makes sence too, got an HD tV for xmas, just waiting now for prices to drop and the war to end so to speak.

The other thing is tv provider too, we were with sky but going back to virgin media there package seems better for HD support, plus thire top box warrenty is forever, but sky is only 12 months, then you pay for call outs.

I really regret the day I went to Sky, still live and learn. :)

More studios have gone with Blu-Ray over HD DVD, but from what I have seen, at least at Wal-Mart, HD DVD movies sell faster than Blu-Ray though it appears that Blu-Ray is outselling HD elsewhere. I still want to do some more research on that though. There is always the combo players that have both formats built in though those may be a bit pricier than a single format player.

There is a winner and it is Bluray. Everyone in the industry knows it. HD DVD is dead, they just forgot to lie down. Now you have Microsoft clearing it's throat saying, "Well we have been talking to Bluray all along."

It's over and done with. A year ago there was a question but now it's safe to go ahead and make that investment.

If you are going to get a Bluray player you might as well get a PS3. It happens to be one of the highest rated of all Bluray players.

Woolworths Dumps HD-DVD

Becomes first High Street retailer to solely back Blu-Ray

Woolworths has announced that it is to drop HD-DVD from its product mix in March – leaving Blu-Ray as the sole ‘next-gen’ DVD format in its stores.

The decision was made by Woolworths execs after Blu-Ray discs outsold HD-DVD by ten-to-one at the chain over Christmas.

Woolworths will continue to sell HD-DVD online, but a new Blu-Ray-only chart will now appear in 820 stores online.

The retailer started selling both HD-DVD formats in October.

“Sales figures clearly show that the market is moving towards one format of high definition DVD,” says Woolworths DVD buyer Steven McGunigel.

“The main reason is the success of Sony’s PlayStation 3 machine.

Because it plays Blu-Ray discs, there are over three quarters of a million homes in the UK that can view the new high definition format. There is nowhere near that number of HD-DVD players around.

“Switching to Blu-Ray only will provide one clear offer to customers in the format they want to watch high definition movies in.”

The two competing formats have split the loyalties of Hollywood’s studios and movie distributors.

Blu-Ray has been backed by Samsung, Sony, Warner, Dell, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox.

HD-DVD has been backed by NEC, Microsoft and Universal.

If only they'd not falen out in the first place. History repeating itself.

You don't need to buy HD DVD (or blue-ray) to get high resolution looking pictures. The other day, I had my normal DVD in my HD-DVD player, hooked up to my HD TV and it was being pumped out at 1080i. So sweet!

As long as I can upconvert by normal DVDs, I don't see a need to buy HD-DVDs.

The truth of the matter is, these new supposed formats were to be an enhancement to better view quality. Really though, it was a new way just for the big movie industry to try and stop piracy.

the same day that Blueray came out, then the encryption was hacked.

It was hacked? Hahaha. That means I'll be getting cheap movies soon.

You know you can get pirated DVDs here for under US$1? Around $.75 each. I usually buy those for movies I never really intend to see on the theater anyway (like Rambo IV...hahaha. Did anyone see that? Dear lord...), or movies that do not have "collectors' value" to me. I did, however, get original Transformers Special Edition with the Transforming box, the Band of Brothers Tin Box collection (lent the first set to an ex. She took off with that one. ######.) and several other movies.

As for the rest, pirated DVDs are the best.

Hi Def Digest http://www.highdefdigest.com/ is a pretty good site and they always have the latest release lists. Many of the members there are saying that a great many shops in the UK are dropping HD DVD and going Blu. Maybe some locals can comments on this.

Things have gone from bad to worse for HD DVD in the space of one week.

Wal-Mart Stores announced on Friday morning that it, too, has chosen a side in the battle for high-definition video supremacy: by June, it will stock only Blu-ray Disc players.

Yeah I'm surprised Universal Studios and Paramount are still with HD DVD. I'm sure they'll see the light sooner or later. We just got out HD TV today so now we just gotta get a blu-ray player a re-buy all the good action movies in Blu-Ray. Hooked up the DVD player and all I've been watching are action movies. But yeah from all these articles, it looks like HD DVD is dead.

Toshiba to exit HD DVD, end format war-NHK

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp is planning to stop production of equipment compatible with the HD DVD format for high-definition video, allowing the competing Blu-Ray camp a free run, public broadcaster NHK reported on Saturday.

Toshiba is expected to suffer losses amounting to tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) to scrap production of HD DVD players and recorders and other steps to exit the business, Japan's NHK said on its website.

No one at Toshiba could be reached for comment.

The format war between the Toshiba-backed HD DVD and Sony Corp's Blu-Ray, often compared to the Betamax-VHS battle in the 1980s, has slowed the development of what is expected to be a multibillion dollar high-definition DVD industry.

Toshiba was dealt a blow on Friday when Wal-Mart Stores Inc said it would abandon the HD DVD format, becoming the latest in a series of top retailers and movie studios to rally behind Blu-ray technology for high definition DVDs.

Toshiba plans to continue selling HD DVD equipment at stores for the time being but will not put resources into developing new devices, NHK said.

Toshiba denies imminent death of HD DVD

We remain firm in the belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of consumers," said Akio Ozaka, head of Toshiba America Consumer Products, at a news conference. He said Toshiba was surprised by Friday’s announcement that Warner Bros is dumping HD DVD in favour of Blu-ray. "We are especially surprised that this decision was made in spite of the significant momentum that HD DVD has gained in the US market and other regions."

What I don't get is why would people not want a format that allows you to watch any movie made anywhere over a format that is handicapped by regions.

One needs to take the NPD stats with a grain of salt. They do not include sales figures from Wal-Mart.

WHICH FORMAT IS WINNING?

By David Lieberman, USA TODAY

If you want to know who's winning the high-def DVD battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD, then get some aspirin. It's complicated.

Hardware. NPD Group says that each format got 49% of all player sales last year; the remainder went to units that handle both formats.

But NPD doesn't include data from Wal-Mart. The lower-priced HD DVD players likely would do especially well at the value-oriented chain.

On the other hand, since NPD doesn't disclose how many high-def players consumers bought, it's hard to factor in the 2.6 million PlayStation 3 systems that consumers bought and that aren't in NPD's tally for high-def players.

Although PS3s play Blu-ray videos, advocates debate how many gamers use them for that purpose.

Software. Consumers bought 8.3 million high-def DVDs last year, 63% of them on Blu-ray, according to Adams Media Research.

But HD DVD backers say that's hardly a landslide in a market where people also bought 1.1 billion standard DVDs. They add that lots of consumers who buy HD DVD players use them to watch conventional DVDs boosted to near high-def quality.

Is the tug of war over high-def DVD format over?

The porn industry initially chose HD DVD. The problem is the internet destroyed the power the porn industry had in the days of video tape. Now it is about the power of the game machine and it's trojan (pun intended) horse.
