Got Maps?

Recommended Posts

The main flaw here is that all maps are loaded into the game on launch. Auto-download is an ok feature, better than no download at all. Auto-download & Instant Play is a whole other bag.

GRAW needs to look at the way CounterStrike & Call Of Duty handle downloads. Auto-download & instant access. In this day and age, it should be a standard feature.

FlimFlam..great post.

*sarcasm on* You're right WBK. The auto d/l'er shouldn't be incorporated cuz you don't like to wait to play. All of you that are too stupid to d/l the maps before you join a server don't deserve to play anyway. *sarcasm off*

Really bad example WBK. Especially considering if AW2 is going to have any life whatsoever we're gonna have to rely on the community to make maps. We sure as heck aren't gonna get them from GRIN/UBI.

I'll put my $.02 into this conversation as well just so we can get a feel of the general consensus concerning autodownload (Maybe a poll would and seperate topic for this would be good).

It was a little frustrating for me playing the [Ghost Recon] and having to try and figure out which mods were running on a server then trying to go find them and then join the game only to find I missed a mod somewhere or I have the wrong version.

Yes it is somewhat lazy, but isn't that the definition of convenient?

Sure you might miss a map while you are waiting for the autodownloader to do it's thing but if it's a popular server you plan on coming back to you only have to autodownload it once and then you're set until they add other modifications to the server. I guess my philosphy for a game would be to make the end user have to work as little as possible to be able to join and play in servers. Less headache for the player means happier gamers and more people playing on servers in my opinion. Why not give the consomers as many options and convienances as possible?

Now I also feel that there are other things in the game that need a bit more attention at the moment then autodownload (namely coop), but needless to say it is still a nice feature to have.

I feel the autodownloader should be included and developed with the game itself, by Ubi/GRiN. BUT I also feel that it should be an option in the main menu to turn it OFF. For those of us who'd like to go to a clan's webiste and download the maps for their server, we can do that. For those who are casually surfing the servers and happen across upon one running maps we don't have, and we wanna play tonight, leave autodownload on. Optional, INCLUDED functionality. Also should be a server-side option to turn on/off the autodownload prompter. If on, it would eventually direct a player's game to an ftp ocation to download the maps.

I also like what some teams did in GRAW with map packs. For instance, BDA had the 'mother of all hangovers' map pack that was ONE compressed folder with all the maps in it. One download rather than several different ones, and then when some of those maps had different versions there was no confusion. Their server announced which map packs ran on which days and where to download them. They did a great job with that, I felt. Really GI-proof.

Poll? I think that's a GREAT idea...

When Vhladd released his map pack, I put it in an installer. As idiot proof as possible and people still complained about having to go to our website to d/l it. I even put the file in our main folder so you didn't have to type so much. The link was even in the server name. And still a downloader would have been much better.

Lets face it,Autodownload is a main stay of gaming.Like many other things Grin has left out because they didnt feel it was needed for lack of funds or people or whatever excuse, that they felt would make or break a game.

We already use gamespy to find servers,We can also see server info,we can see maps the server is running.

How about since Graw checks maps upon startup,How about putting a warning to check maps in the server info tab when you click on a server in the multiplay consol when you dont have a particular map.In the info tab, maps you dont have would show up in red. Then you could alow server admins a download location in the server info window.Click on it,it minimizes Graw, loads exlporer, bam, right to the download without any loss of bandwidth for the Graw server.Or not.

Or AUTO DOWNLOAD.

 Some of those maps remind me of Old GR Maps.....or maybe I'm just "dazed and confused"!

IMO..... I think the hardest part of creating a NEW Map is the actual artistic creation, layout and the actual flow of said map. So with that said....you look @ all the beautifully created maps that we all know and love GR Maps, GRAW1 and the maps from the Xbox series(which I havent played  nor will ever)

Posted by NoFears I Wanna see this in the next map pack for GR:AW2 (PC) and the other maps that is missing.. http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/34915/Gh...ion-Screenshots.
THATS A BOATLOAD OF MAPS...that would make 2 or 3 map packs alone!! Conversion, Conversion Conversion.......MO Money, MO Money, MO Money! ;)

naw cell you're nuts, Railroad bridge looks awesome

:<img src=:'> wow, that railroad bridge looks kinda like the [GR] one. I recognized the house to the far east too.

the layout is exactly to the specs of the [GR] map.

Question: Why in bl$%dy 'ell can't UBI release these [GR] style maps for GRAW2? it's still ubisofts product, and this mappack would surely save GRAW2 I should think.

Man I can't wait for those maps to come out on the 360. I'm interested to see if I can still do some of those objectives out of order to see if some of the linearity has been taken out of the game. Just wish I had highspeed in my area. I guess I'm going to have to try out caves with my 12 year old step daughter.

Sorry, it's off topic and you guys couldn't care less but I just get excited when I see those maps. If they could somehow get them on the pc and working right I agree that you would see some people back.

Should be WILD hgh speed in Fredricksburg. Hmm...

I had Cox when we lived in fredericksburg which was extremely fast and nice. Since we moved about 20 miles south to caramel church in the middle of nowhere high speed has been hard to come by. One year + and counting without high speed and its killing me.

AH. My sister lives in Spotsylvania and works in Culpeper. She's been on dialup for years.

BACK TO MAPS!

(And wishing GRAW2 had the draw distance to make them not suck)

Farm, Battlefield, Docks, Air Base (or was is Airfield?), Red Square, Ghost Town. At LEAST. Hell, I'd think it would be great to see ALL of them eventually released for GRAW2.

Again, if it had the draw distance to make them worthwhile to play.

Again, I have no clue why UBI would not deliever the MAP pack they all know we would die for. That's guarenteed sales for UBI. A patch to fix the game 1.05.. in January, the map pack.. GRAW2 sales would sore.. and so would the map pack.

Sell it as a map pack and bundled as well.

This is guarenteed money.. I can't be smarter then those guys at UBI .. can I ?

Perhaps for the PC platform, UBI does not believe the sales return will outweigh or justify the investment to produce such a map pack. I for one would not pay over 5 to 10.00 for such a pack and it would have to contain enough different maps to (minimum 6 completely different maps not different gamemodes on the same 2 or 3 maps). Given Wolfsong's projections that it can take a month or so to completely test a map and gamemodes on it(it was in the thread about the unfinished maps on the game disk), that is going to be a sizable investment if they pay several people to just test it - let alone create it.

The other aspect of the Return on Investment for UBI is will it spur new sales of GRAW2? I do not think a map pack at this late in the game with numbers having dwindled so low will create a rush of new players and purchases for the game. So again it's comes back to are they willing to invest a sizable chunk into a game that probably won't result in profit or enough profit (whatever their required or projected ROI is) to justify the game to the suits and the shareholders.

So actually, fiscally speaking, I can definitely see where and why they would be reluctant to invest further into the series.

At this point I think the only real hope for continued sales is to fix the autodownload and the glaring bugs. Those 2 things can actually facilitate growth. An easier editor wouldn't hurt either but that's asking too much at this point. If the community is given a tool for easy distribution of their maps, this can get some map makers intersted in producing maps again. It also makes it easy for custom content to proliferate for players and server hosts. If they even were to give us a half dozen new maps and no autodownload, how long will those maps last until we are just right back where we started? 2 maybe 3 months? Make it easier for the community to make and distribute maps and you will new content at a much more steady stream and the game will stay fresher for a longer time and will not completely stagnate.

i think ubi has no intrest for a game to last longer than 6 months

you should have bought the next game after 3 months just for them to keep shareholders happy..

shareholders give a rusty nail for lasting games cause they (the games that last) do not fill their pockets.

I don't know, kind of a double edged sword though. You create a lasting game and then gamers buy more of your games because they know it's quality. Just because a game like the [Ghost Recon] had years of re playability that didn't stop us from buying other games as well. The way they are doing it know definitely ensures their fans won't be back. Once the games they produce start to become like fast food people will get sick of it and the earnings will decrease as people look for finer dining.
