WytchDokta
...sorry WytchDokta, that AKG 701 was too expensive. wacko.gif Funny how many people say that, but with AKG you definitely get what you pay for. The sound reproduction through my K701's are the best I've ever heard out of any of the headphones I've had before, and the comfort far surpasses the comfort level of all other known headphones. Take it from some-one who has tried alot of pairs of headphones (different makes), before finally settling down with AKG. They are actually that expensive now, as a new model has come onto the market now. I bought my K701's for £300, that was £300 well spent - these things are worth every penny. They retail for alot less than £300 now. I thinking of getting some ear phones too and an additional pair of headphones - I refuse to look outside of AKG's product range, despite the expense. Cpl Ledanek
hope you can join here too Jedielk ...so this Beyer DT770 is a little uncomfortable to use over 45minutes or so. I've read that your suppose to stretch them out, so it doesn't squeeze your melon like a vicegrip. What technique did you guys use to safely stretch your headphone? Thanks

I've read that your suppose to stretch them out, so it doesn't squeeze your melon like a vicegrip. What technique did you guys use to safely stretch your headphone? Thanks I have the same problem w/ my Vic Firth isolation headphones. They would literally cause me headaches until I stretched them out good. Even now, probably six months later, they're still super tight. I can't complain I guess, because they do their job: provide flat response and keep out alot of outside noise. I confess that the only games I use sound for are FPS games anymore, but my headphones have proven invaluable for home recording work. WytchDokta
...so this Beyer DT770 is a little uncomfortable to use over 45minutes or so. So there we have it - proof positive. I do remember countless times saying that AKG headphones are alot more comfortable (over extended periods of time wearing them) than other competing brands. And that's quite understandable and if your paying $300 for a pair of headphones they better be comfortable. It's not that we're not listening to you it's just that those of us with mouths to feed and shoe spending habits to indulge, we have to sacrifice our own comfort and buy the cheaper sets. I'm actually kind of glad that after several hours I have to get off the headphones. I need those mandator breaks in my gaming. It's kind of like I know I can get a much sweeter ride with an italian sports car yet for some odd reason I drive a camry.

I do remember countless times saying that AKG headphones are alot more comfortable (over extended periods of time wearing them) than other competing brands. I found it a very nice trade off for the price, half the AKG, plus the whole white theme...don't get me wrong its sexy. The sound is welcome to my gaming. I'm replaying COD4 (prefer the SAS missions over the Marine Missions)...I love the "plinking" on the suppressed weapons and ambience when sneaking around. The background music really delivers. Crysis, I'm playing Delta/Hardest setting and I really get sucked-in to the game when I get surrounded with Koreans I can't understand what they are saying, but I can hear them all around me. If I'm able to retrieve enough loose change on the couch+underneath the car seat I might pick up UT3, or RE-INSTALL RavenShield. The Regiment sounds seems over the top on the sounds...but gameplay is another thread. Music wise...its superb...but it doesn't last long since I prefer to use my little time with gaming. So I must not be using the DT770 to its fullest. Icrap---just crapped...again...so I'm back to my Nokia 5300 for my mp3s. Maybe another lifetime...I'll try AKG

squad_e
Headphones do look cool, when you wear them.. But i hate them imo, because I hate how they feel, its as if your head is in a vice or a clamp. I have to put up with them when i'm in the edit suite at college.. I'm an earbud earphone fan, there's so much more freedom with earbuds (comfort).. There compact, comfortable and neat. But like wytchdokta says, you get for what you pay for and that's mostly true.. Cpl Ledanek
...this BeyerDT770 PRO is major sound quality step-up from my Bose Triport if that comparison helps with anyone else considering an upgrade...now outside the house and I'm just listening to my highly compressed mp3 on my Nokiea 5300, I'd definitely take the Bose Triport over the DT770 due to weight + portability. Or, I picked up (of all the places) a SkullCandy Earbud for $7 at Marshalls/TJMaxx...yup I'm that cheap and it does fine with my Nokia 5300
WytchDokta
AKG have started making earphones too They should go well with my new Sony Ericsson phone I plan to get (either the W960 or the yet to be released C905.) Although I'm not sure [the earphones] would be able to withstand prolonged exposure to the ferocity of the mighty 'core blasting through them as much as my AKG K701's have. The 'core blew up one set of cheap headphones already (loud volume was the gunpowder, the 'core was the fuse), but the AKG's are still going strong even though they'd had more exposure to the destructive attributes of the 'core. WytchDokta
Revive old thread FTW. Well, my AKG's are still holding up just like they are new and I've had them for over 1 year now. No signs of wear and tear, not even the slightless hint at loss of audio. More and more I am finding though that I can hear things in games before other gamers hear them - this is very true of L4D, I can hear the grunting sounds of Tanks and the like beofre other gamers can hear them. This is probably due to a mix of my X-Fi audio settings ( X-Fi sounds all the more awesome when you know what to set certain audio values at and what other effects/features to adjust ) and headphones with excellent sound reproduction. I've also just purchased a pair of EarForce X1's (manufactured by Turtle Beach) primarily for use with my Xbox. These replace some old cheap brand name heavy headphones I was using - which would become very uncomfortable over extended periods and would press into the sides of your head, meaning wearing glasses with them was a no-no. This problem does not exist with my AKG's or my EF X1's. Again, I'm running the audio through headphones, and my AKG reference headphones are set to the wrong frequency for games consoles/MP3 players etc. If used with those appliances, they produce very flat tinny sounds. That's what you gotta be aware of, not all headphones cover all frequncies, some will reproduce awesome sound through PC's but the sound through MP3 players etc will be rubbish; some will reproduce better sound from MP3 players, but will reproduce rubbish sounds when used for PC's; some work just as good for everything. The Ear Force headphones are very light and so feel like they will break very easily (too much plastic IMO). Good sound reproduction too, but I've heard better. But they like AKG's are very comfortable even after extended periods of wearing them. They also work just as good for PC's and Xbox's and by all accounts MP3 players and the like. I have no reason to try them out with PC as my AKG's are for that. Turtle Beach also give you like a million cables for their headsets, and it's all plug one into the other with the cables. Why can't they just supply one lead to connect the headphones to the audio out? Instead it's like three cables connected into each other. Even then, you won't get any sound through them until you've you've connected up the USB cable. So be warned before you decide to buy a pair of their headphones. I've also just bought some AKG K330 earphones from my Zen X-Fi (screw the iPod hype, I'm going for Zen X-Fi, because I refuse to sacrifice quality for popularity. ) And damn, the sound that these reproduce is.... beyond words. The build quality is also very good, as with my K701's. And before you ask, yes, the K330 earphones cost almost as much as the TB EF X1 headphones. "Sounds Better" is the AKG motto. And so I hear and I obey. Edited November 14, 2009 by WytchDokta
Cpl Ledanek
thanks for the review I've been looking at this Creative Zen X-Fi 32 GB Video MP3 Player with Wireless LAN and Built-In Speaker (Black/Silver) at Amazon for $199 ever since WK77 pointed it out, but I've been saving my pennies for Logitech G25, since it dropped it's price since launch of G27. I'm still putting up with my Sansa 2GB clip ($10 from Office Depot last year)...goes ok with my Bose Triport and Sennheiser CX300, but no dice for my Beyerdynamic DT770. I was going to add a FiiO E5 Headphone Amplifier, but peeps at Hi-Fi forum, swore it's under-power for the DT770 My DT770 are finally releasing it's Kung-Fu grip. I might hand-me-down it to my bro and get the Sennheiser HD-555 (with the Zalman Microphone Zm-Mic1), but this time I'll test trial it for more than 15 minutes this time. Shame to give my DT770 since it's awesome IMHO for OPF:DR If I get rich like WD, or have access to AKG to try out, I'll definitely take it into consideration. WytchDokta
If I get rich like WD, or have access to AKG to try out, I'll definitely take it into consideration. I'm not rich. in fact, I'd rather be poor and happy than rich and unhappy. I don't have the version of Zen X-Fi with wireless LAN. I also don't have 32GB version either, I don't need all that space. I need circa 8GB for my music collection. You can fit videos and photos on the Zen X-Fi's too, but then you don't benefit from the X-Fi part. X-Fi is about audi right? Pictures are not audio. Hence I don't have and never will have pics/vids on my Zen X-Fi. I was going to add a FiiO E5 Headphone Amplifier, but peeps at Hi-Fi forum, swore it's under-power for the DT770 You don't need that if you have a decent pair of headphones and/or good sound cards set up correctly - to maximise audio potential. WytchDokta
WOOHOO Guitar Center is finally carrying AKGs...WD which do you recommend for gaming within these selections Don't you wish your headphones were sexy like AKG? AKG.com is your friend. Hi-res pics of their products and detailed descriptions can be found there. Interestingly enough, the ones on their website are different, probably region specific. I'm viewing the website from the UK and am seeing K272's and K142's - the link you posted is showing K271's and K141's. I'd guess that AKG sell different headphones in US than in Europe. The K272's and the K242's are HD (hi-definition) level headphones, so the K271's and K241's might be too. They'd all probably do the job just fine. But be aware, like I've said before, you can't just take one set of headphones and use it for MP3's players and gaming, it doesn't work like that. You can't take 'reference' level headphones and use them for DJ'ing. I say can't in both in both cases - physically you can, but you get will get flat, tinny sounds through the headphones. DJ headphones are fro DJ'ing, reference headphones are predominantly for studio work/audio work, but also produce very good sound when used for gaming, atleast when connected through a sound card. This is how it is for K701 reference headphones, yet if I used them for my Xbox gaming, I would get flat sounds. When I use them for PC gaming, I get amazing sounds. So you see, there are different frequencies, and not all headphones work on all frequencies. HD headphones should work effectively as all-rounders. As that is a music store/site that you linked to, they might not be HD headphones (it doesn't say) The K141's have a 5-star review/rating on that website. That or the more expensive K271's would be my choice. From the reviewer: HONEST and TRUE REPRODUCTION, whether you soar or suck, it's the undisputable TRUTH. Note the reviewer says he/she is using them for studio work/music creation. This means they might be reference headphones, which is not what you're looking for - although the sound reproduction during gaming/listening to music with reference headphones (with X-Fi correctly set up to maximise gaming audio/listening to music experience) is.... well, in the five languages I speak, I do not have enough words to decribe how good it is. See above, K142's are HD headphones, I don't know about K141's. A lot of the quality of the sound reproduction depends on how your X-Fi equaliser/FX are set up. AKG headphones generally are expensive, but you get what you pay for with AKG. Take it from some-one who has several pairs of AKG headphones/earphones and has been using them for nearly two years now (and will now only ever by headphones from AKG (despite their price) due solely to their astounding audio reproduction) Audio. You're doing it wrong because you don't have AKG. Yes, I'm slightly biased. Edited November 19, 2009 by WytchDokta

WytchDokta
Any suggestions for a decent headset (headphone + mic)? I'm looking for some that are comfortable and over the entire ear (cup?) type. Ear Force X series by Turtle Beach? Although, my pair of X1's have two drawbacks. Firstly, after wearing them for prolonged periods, they tend to irritate/hurt behind the ears - especially if you wear glasses (seems this headset presses inwards as such.) Secondly, and possibly not a drawback as such (depending which way you perceive it).... Cable overdose. To the max. You want a headset, forget it, the X1 package is disproportionately more cable than headset. Black cables. GrEy cables. Pink jacks. Green jacks. Extention cables. USB cables. Mic volume control cables. Y cables....
firefly2442
Are all these cables attached to the headset or is it a modular setup?
WytchDokta
Are all these cables attached to the headset or is it a modular setup? Nee. It's not 100% modular. The grEy cable attached to the headset, which is so long you could use it for bungee jumping, eventually splits into a 3-way Y cable: one side ends in a USB connector (which the providided USB extension cable can attach to), another other side ends in a green male audio jack (which can be plugged directly into audio device OR plugged into the provided L/R audio Y cable (one side with red jack, one side with white jack) via the green female audio jack at the other side of this Y cable. The reason behind it is dual console/PC set up adaptability. Not to slate them any further, but you might want to be wary of the construction of this headset. Some people are. Let's just say that AKG definitely use better materials, then again, AKG don't [yet] make headsets (and yes they do make some headphones (studio/production level) that are of a modular setup)
