Stinger 0
As many of you know I love to cool stuff. Unhappy with my temps of 34C Idle and 49C Max Load I set out to fix that. Conventually fans on CPU's are exhaust and blow the air out. But the fan I had laying around was a beast at blowing air at stuff. So I figured why not reverse it. With some twist ties I attached my giant 92mm fan to the HS and removed the 60mm fan. I have my Nexus to control the volume so I wasnt worried about all the noise. After I got it setup I was met with a CPU fan error DOH! Then I remembered I prolly ought to attach some fan to the little 3 pin connector on the mobo so I did and I was right. My new temps are 32C Idle and after folding and playing UT 2K3 for a long while my temps never topped 40C. I am very happy

I would've chickened out and left my machine as is if I were in your position.
supasniper 0
man, my temps will freak you out! they are: cpu: 47C idle, not sure about load mobo: 35C i don't have a case fan and i'm using the akasa 821 heatsink+fan i've got £30 ($40) to spend on getting it to a decent temp, what should i get? Stinger 0
LoL, twist ties. That was very ballsy... I would've chickened out and left my machine as is if I were in your position. Yeah, Im nervous too. What if it falls...But I think Ill be okay. Next time I turn it off I will check again and add some more twist ties. man, my temps will freak you out! they are: cpu: 47C idle, not sure about load mobo: 35C i don't have a case fan and i'm using the akasa 821 heatsink+fan i've got £30 ($40) to spend on getting it to a decent temp, what should i get? Your Idle temp blows. If I were you I would search for a new case. Cause that hot air has no where to go. Its just being moved around. So case and a case fan would be what I would look for. Ruin 17
I have a spiffy fan on the side of my case... I'd love to have a better cooling system though. I need the cash first.. .rofl.
Pyro_Monty 0
I'm just about to put in an order for a new case so as to improve my cooling a little (and fit an extra hard drive). I'm getting the Antec PlusView 1000AMG Metallic Gray with the case window as standard. I'll probably run four or five 80-mils, three out, two in or two out two in. It's hard not to get obsessed with cooling... must not order 5.25 bay 40mm fans... must not order 5.25 bay 40mm fans... must not order...
Urban_Tiger 0
Go on, yo know you want to muhahahahahahaha!!!! Array them so they blow over ya H/D's on the intake too, 3 exhaust fans at the rear and I swear I occasionaly see frost forming in the damn case LMAO!!! I could keep milk inside my damn case and it wouldn't go off rofl !! Allow for the noise tho if it's gonna bother you, it's claimed that the 80mil fans aren't too noisy which singularly or as a pair they aren't really, have 6 of the damn things turning and the tempo rises. Great when ya playing WW2 Flight Sims tho rofl, extra 3d sound of another Spitfire next to you hehehe.
Stinger 0
By a Vantec Nexus controller. I use it and its great. Not a single prob. I can make my beast fan queiter than my 80mm fans any time. My HDD's never get hot enough to warrant extra cooling for themselves in any extraordinary amount. There is an 80mm fan and a 60mm fan on one of them though so Im not too worried. Edited May 5, 2003 by Stinger
RooK 0
Stinger, isn't your 92mm a Tornado? If so, doesn't it have a 3pin connector seperate from the power so you can let the mb monitor it? My 80mm does. Twist ties aren't *that* gutsy All that holds on most fans are little screws. Just so long as its blowing on the heatsink fins, it should be fine. supasniper: Buy a good heatsink/fan combo and as3 if you havent already. That will make the biggest difference. I think a Vantec Aeroflow can be had for that much. Just remember, if the room temperature is high, and the case isn't ventilated, it won't matter much what you do. Pyro_Monty: Forget the drive bays with those teenie 40mm fans, invest in a dremel (if not owned already) and cut you a nice 120mm side and top vent and mount some fans. You can also get some snazzy fan covers that will allow ventilation while covering up your hack job if your a little messy with the dremel. Best part, if you have the dremel, everything can be had for $20ish

Yeah, top ventilation would be nice and the case I'm getting has a side-mounted fan built into the case window. Considering I'm only running an Athlon XP 1600, cooling for that probably isn't too important, so I needn't go overboard. Hehehe. Urban_Tiger, ha! That's a nice way of looking at it. Stinger 0
Well I wasnt sure if not to place the 3 pin in the mobo or not. Yes it is a tornado. Is it safe to put the 3 pin connector into the mobo as long as it is recieving power still from a 4 pin molex connnector?
RooK 0
Stinger, it will be fine. The 3pin on the Tornado is for rpm monitoring purposes only, it doesn't act as a power supplier
Stinger 0
Thanks RooK, now I hooked that up and its chugging away at 5193 RPM
supasniper 0
well i only spent £5 on 2 80mm case fans and i lowered my temps to cpu: 32C mobo: 29C (both idle)
