GrimeyAK
Is anyone else going to grab GoW for PC? I probably will even though I've got it for the 360. It's got everything the 360 version had (including DLC), plus more. Plus it's got all of the UE3 optimizations that Epic has made since the original GoW release. I just wish they'd release a demo of some sort. That way I can see how it will run on my PC. If they do, I hope they give the demo full graphical capability so we could test full settings. I'd rather have that than a smaller download. The bad thing about GoW is that it's coming out the day after CoD 4. I'm not sure which one I'll get first, but for sure I'll get both of them at one time or another. And Crysis, and UT3...
Sup
Try the UT3 demo, it should be very similar specifications. Gears actually probably crunches less polies than ut3, and the texture sizes are naturally variable.
GrimeyAK
Actually my 7950 GX2 runs the UT3 demo quite well. I will be buying the new 8800GT next week with the help of my friend, then I'll probably sell the GX2 off. I'm pretty sure the 8800GT will run things pretty well, especially if those leaked benchmarks are to be believed (and I do believe them). Plus, the price is a major selling point. Rocky
Anyone a bit wary of the PC version being a straight port with the usual control hastles, need not have worried according to this report. The PC version of Gears of War is a welcome reminder of how much better PC gaming can be, and that it can do big, stupid action way better than the consoles that took stupid to the masses. And the extra levels that won't be released on Xbox because it can't handle them? Well, that's just funny. Sounds awesome.

A complete lie to make the game sound more appealing to anti console PC elitists, but still funny!
GrimeyAK
I think it may have something to do with the fact that the PC version uses a newer build of UE3. The new map may not be compatible with the older version. I'm not that tech-savvy so I might be wrong, and it could be something else completely. One thing that turned me off is that by looking at the Epic Games forums, it seems that there will be no dedicated servers. Microsoft wants users to use the GFW Live service to play, and although I do already have an XBL account, I'd rather have a dedi server to play on rather than ranking and matchmaking services. Unless Epic announces dedicated servers, I'm sticking with buying CoD4 first.
firefly2442
I picked this game up for $30 after playing Gears and Gears 2 fairly extensively as Co-op on XBox with friends. I'm not quite sure what to make of this. Playing the single-player on the medium difficulty is so incredibly hard it gets to the point of being very frustrating because I die so often. There are many points that become even harder because in the coop you at least have some help instead of having to switch between things (such as driving and shooting). I can't tell you how many times I've peeked out of cover only to be shot dead instantly by a sniper or boomer. I'm sure the coop is better but every time I go online, nobody is playing coop. I tried versus but as soon as I joined everyone started complaining that my mic was on. Ok, I thought, I'll look in the settings, but there was nothing there. I wanted to ask them how to turn it off but I couldn't because I didn't know the button for chat and it wasn't in the settings. This sounds like it's going to be one of those games where I crank it down to easy, play it through, and then it will sit on my shelf for eternity. Kinda sad actually, I was looking forward to playing coop. Even with the "extra" content, it still kinda feels like a cheap console port. Even the AI in the game is terrible, they run way out in front of me and die quickly. It's not even worth trying to save them because I'll die in the process. I'll take Rainbow Six Vegas over this game anyday.... Edited January 23, 2009 by firefly2442

But if you think 'Hardcore' (medum)is hard, try 'insane' (hard). I've actually completed the game on 'Hardcore' (medum). The end boss is very hard to defeat in that difficutly, if you don't know what your doing. But there is a glitch that was never patched, whereby the end boss gets stuck on the geometry - so you can just blind fire at him from behind cover. firefly2442
So much for playing my game: http://games.slashdot.org/games/09/01/30/0556251.shtml Now I can't even run it.
Rocky
OMG you have to be kidding me. "It seems that the DRM on the PC version of Gears of War came with a built-in shut-off date; the digital certificate for the game was only good until January 28, 2009. Now, the game fails to work unless you adjust your system's clock. What is Epic's response? 'We're working on it.'" Words fail me. Well not really, I could really go off on one about this, but best to leave my blood pressure where it is for now...

The digital certificate has expired and apparently Games for Windows Live isn't down with that. I'd expect a fix fairly soon. firefly2442
The thing that bothers me is this: what if Epic (the creator of this game) was out of business? I have a lot of older games where the developer/publisher is now out of business. What would I do in that case?
ApexMods
The thing that bothers me is this: what if Epic (the creator of this game) was out of business? I have a lot of older games where the developer/publisher is now out of business. What would I do in that case? You make an excellent point that applies to all activation-based DRM schemes. Personally, I consider any software that requires some sort of "activation" as "rented" software, and I try to avoid it at all cost. The same goes for "hardware-specific" or "time-limited" licensing, in the sense that your "registration key" works only for your current computer or only for a specific period of time. What if you upgrade your machine later and then find out you cannot get a new key? My suggestion: Boycot developers who try to force these ridiculous DRM techniques on you, and support the ones that don't in any way possible. Only shrinking commercial viability will get these DRM morons to change their mind! If developers create a product worth its price, people will probably feel compelled to pay for it. The ones who choose to pirate everything would not buy the product under any circumstances to begin with.

firefly2442
How am I supposed to know they actually use DRM though? I mean, if I am the average Joe user going to buy a game at a store, how do I know that it has these restrictions? Just like adding the ESRB rating, there needs to be some kind of indication on the box about how these restrictions work.
WhiteKnight77
This is Ubisoft's warning of CP/DRM included with the game. In the UK or Europe it does not say, but Oz, states exactly what CP is in use. As for other games, I could not say. Maybe it is time to take a trip through Best Buy to see what other games have. I need some more GR.net business cards.
firefly2442
I just looked all over the box and copy of my game (US version) and I couldn't find anything about DRM like is posted in your image. The back is completely different and it doesn't have that yellow box.... I wonder if there are laws about this in different countries? Wait, hold on, the image you posted is for Far Cry 2. Yeh I think about this sometimes too, mind you, a publisher does not have to go out of business for this to be a concern, there are other reasons that could leave owners high and dry. DRM systems come and go, what if that becomes obselete? There's another reason that has slipped my mind right now, but basically publishers are not giving two hoots about the customer, the paying customer, by not thinking far enough ahead. It's a genuine concern.

firefly2442
I tried taking a picture but my camera is kinda old and the image turned out to be completely out of focus. Here's the back of the XBox version: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/im....html?box=67282 It's essentially very similar.
