WytchDokta 6
Now I'm up and running on the new rig, I have the following questions: (1) I've seen several posts on these forums where people say they've set each core to use different amounts (of processing power/usage?) How can I specify how much each core uses? (2) My core #1 runs in the fifties. Yesterday it was idling at 55-56 degrees, this morning it's idling at 53. It gets a little hotter, maybe around 10 degrees more during gaming. I know 50 degrees is quite hot, but is it safe to let it run in the fifties for extended periods of time? I'm thinking along the lines of long term damage. FYI, my second core runs in the thirties. It's idling at 35 degrees right now. (3) I installed my Phys-X card yesterday, and it's not being detected by my rig. I had some trouble getting it in the PCI slot, it would only go in so far initially, which meant it wasn't in fully. I had to ram it in for the last bit to get it to seat in there properly. I've connected up the molex too, and I know the problem isn't the supplised molex lead - I've got one power to molex lead coming from my PSU, with three molex connectors on it, connected to two are two fans each, connected to the last one is the Phys-X (channeled through the supplied molex) and the case front LED's. Any ideas? Edited October 10, 2007 by WytchDokta
Nutlink 0
Not sure about 1 and 2, but for 3 did you try moving it to another available PCI slot?
WytchDokta 6
Not sure about 1 and 2, but for 3 did you try moving it to another available PCI slot? Not yet, there's not alot of room left. I think I'm connect another power to molex cable into my modular PSU and give the Phys-X that whole cable to itself, see if that works. I dunno, maybe it's not drawing off enough additional power from the connected molex as I have 2-3 things connected to each molex chain.

Kamakazi 0
50 degrees and up is pretty toasty unless of course you are running a quad, in which case an industrial freezer couldn't keep them cool. What cooler are you using? and what thermal paste?

Nutlink 0
Wait, wait, you're not using ANY thermal paste? Did you wipe off the stuff that was on the stock heat sink?
WytchDokta 6
Wait, wait, you're not using ANY thermal paste? Did you wipe off the stuff that was on the stock heat sink? I haven't wiped any paste off, so I must be using stock thermal paste I guess. I've seen some good CPU coolers, all with varying dimensions. Now, if I go for the Socket AM2 CPU coolers (my rig is Socket AM2), does it matter what size the dimensions of the cooler is? I'm a noob when it comes to computer hardware. Argh! Using the configure tab on the SmartFan utility, I have discovered something. According to it, the label 'Core 1' = AMD K8 and the label 'Core 2' = the graphics card. It says the temp for 'core 1' is 37 degrees & the temp for 'core 2' is 53 degrees. This is what I'm talking about: So, can we say it's the graphics card running at 52 degrees, not the 'core' as it labels it? WytchDokta 6
I found out what the Phys-X card issue was and I've solved it. Basically, where the metal part of it sits in the back of the case wasn't seated properly in the slot (I'm talking about the bit like on a sound card where you connect your audio cable, that metal bit). I took the the card out and re-installed it carefully, fired up the rig and it detected the Phys-X card up straight away.
Kamakazi 0
Very good. those temps seem just fine since the 50+ degree one was the vid card. Yeah I have serious issues with my TV tuner card getting it to go in properly into its slot, the little metal tab that sticks down from where you plug stuff in at , the one that goes below the board when installed really, really, likes to catch on stufff. WytchDokta 6
My cable ties like to catch on stuff, especially my hands. That stuff's lethal I tell you. I have cut the ends off the cable ties now though.
