wombat50
I have a team mate that recently lost his left arm. He would continue to play GR if he could find something that would replace the mouse/keyboard setup. We have discussed the Belkin Nostromo N52 and I have heard it only replaces the keyboard. I was very dissappointed on hearing this. I was confused by a review of the N52 whether it was actually for left handers or right handers. Best I could tell, it is made to be used with the left hand? What ever the case, if the N52 only replaces the keyboard it would be a no go for a one armed gamer. Any suggestions on how to play GR on a PC with one hand? Dannik
Not suggesting these items, but they are something to look at. Origin Instruments Accessible Controllers He could use the HeadMouse Extreme for mouse movements, using a camera and sensor on his forehead, while a Sip/Puff Controllerwould replace mouse clicks. I think you can get foot pedals that do the same thing, such as the FragPedal, which gives you left/right click with one foot, and scroll wheel with the other. Then, he rebinds his keys for right handed operation, and it's at least a start. There are a few keyboard replacements designed for gaming that work with either hand, like this one. It's not purely ambidextrous, but it's very close. Edit: Another possibility is a joystick with a hat switch. He'd need to find and use a stick to keyboard mapping program (which are out there), but in theory, the stick would be the "normal" left hand, while the thumb hat would be mouse. Clunky, probably, but not much worse than a game pad would be. There should be enough triggers for basic use, and if combined with the aforementioned FragPedal, would be a lot of control, one handed. =warcloud=
Not sure if this would help your friend, but anyway i was on the first to fight forums back in 2005 and came across this dude who had a motorcycle accident and his left arm was paralyzed, so the only thing i could suggest for him at the time was this.... here i'll just copy & paste what was said in the thread/posts Brabus55: aka Matt Hello all! First post here. I bought "First to Fight" last night, and let me start by saying that it's truly a spectacular game. Probably the best tactical sim I've played so far! Unfortunately, due to a paralyzed left arm that was the result of a motorcycle accident, I'm forced to play all of my games with one arm/hand. Fortunately, I can play most games that recognize my mouse (Logitech MX700), but FTF doesn't recognize three of the eight buttons. Does anyone know of any 8 button mouse that works with FTF specifically? Any input would be most appreceiated, as I simply cannot play FTF as it is right now... Thanks in advance! Best regards, Matt ManU: aka =warcloud= Hi mate I got the MX1000 cordless, a nice mouse but a bit heavy for gaming.I downloaded setpoint 2.31, it has override settings for buttons,in the built in software,if i remember the MX700 has software you can download from there websites,logitech.whatever.May be of some help? the thread http://www.closecombat.org/forums/showthread.php?t=8876 all the best
Buehgler_AS
I would think that some camera based mouse replacement, such as those mentioned by Dannik, or possibly the SmartNav by the folks that make the TrackIR system in combination with the Cyber Snipa (mention by Dannik), or even just a decent keyboard should give him a good start. To the best of my knowledge the N52 really is a left hand only device, and I do not recall seeing a reversed version of it anywhere. I'm sure it will take some trial and error, but I really do think there are a number of decent options available on the market right now. wombat50
Concerning the Nostromo N52: can anyone confirm if the N52 has to be used in conjunction with a mouse. And I do agree with Buehgler, that it is a left handed device, which would be another strike against it in this case. I thought I had found a stop gap measure until something better came along. Using XP's on screen keyboard in conjunction with GR. But it won't show in game to test it, so scrap that idea. I found a post concerning foot pedals that seems encouraging: http://www.game-accessibility.com/forum/vi...ic.php?pid=1622 Thank all of you for your responses. It will be a big help and I know that our team mate is looking forward to considering the possibilities. Going to check out all the links and forward the URL for this topic to my team mates. Dannik
Concerning the Nostromo N52: can anyone confirm if the N52 has to be used in conjunction with a mouse. While I can't confirm it, to the best of my knowledge the Nostromos are simply USB partial left side programmable keyboards. I don't believe it requires the use of a mouse, nor do I believe it overrides an existing keyboard. I think it's more like having a left-hand-centric second keyboard installed. Buehgler_AS
I believe one of the Alpha Squad regular guests uses one, I'll ask him next time I can. As I recall he mentioned that it is partial keyboard, a D-pad, and a scroll-wheel. I guess the real question (which I do not know the answer to) is if the D-pad can be used as a replacement for the mouse.... Ok, I did a bit of research... The manual for the N52 can be found at http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid...5235&scid=0 On Page 3 it seems to hint that it can in fact be "programmed as a mouse"... Beyond that the documentation is not very clear. I would really think that there must be some way to "attach" the D-Pad to the equivalent of mouse movement. Buehgler_AS
Ok, I have confirmation (from an Alpha Squad server regular who has the N-51) that the D-pad can in fact be configured to act as a mouse. Goos luck Wombat, I hope you guys can work out a good solution.
wombat50
Thanks Buehgler. Makes me feel better as our team mate ordered one over the weekend. I didn't want to say yeah or nay not knowing. These would fit the ticket if they were made for video gaming. But they are mostly for CAD programs and it did mention that 3dsMax was supported. http://www.3dconnexion.com/products/3a2.php I'll update after our team mate has a go at it with the N52.
