Guest Jester
Anybody use a Thermaltake volcano 7? Anybody know anything about shims? Benefits? Really worth it? Do you still use thermal paste, or does the shim take the place of that?
WhiteKnight77 1
I have a Volcano 9 (recommended for a 2400+ and up) and use Artic Silver 3.
Dark Ranger 0
Volcano 9 here too...love it. I have been running mine at 3200-3300RPMs with 38C idle, and 45C full load. I must echo WK77 on the AS3. DO NOT use the goop that they send with the processor. It's crap. Invest in some Arctic Silver 3 Thermal Transfer Compound, and put your mind at ease.
RooK 0
Shims are just meant to go ontop of the chip before the heatsink to prevent you from crushing the core (you still need thermal paste, completely different things). Actually, you don't need it. First, AMD put those 4 little foam pads on the cpu for a reason, they prevent you from putting the heatsink on crooked and cracking the core. Second, shims insulate the core and make it contain heat, working against the heatsink's purpose. Lastly, most are made out of a conductive material and have been known to short out the bridges on the cpu and fry it.
