How to find the power

Recommended Posts

Well i am still on the hunt for my new video card and am still faced with the problem of which card to choose. Either the 7950GT or the 8800GTS 640mb. The latter is more expensive but has dx10 support so it will last longer whereas the former is cheaper and i am pretty sure will run on my machine. What i want to know is where do a i find how much watt power i have and the voltage(pretty much all the system requirements for the 8800GTS) The system requirements for the card say 400 watt power with 12 volt or something( one can check that on newegg). This information will either cause me to buy the 7950GT or the 8800GTS. My system specs or at least what i know are these at the moment

Pentium 3.2 GHz

2gb RAM

Nvidia Geforce 6800

Windows XP

If any other info is required then you will have to tell me where to find it because i have no clue. Please help

EDIT: WILL the 8800GTS run on XP.

Check the computer manufacturers manual/CD (if it shipped with one) or the case label of your PSU for its specifications, it should list a max continuous total DC output. If you can't find anything info there it might help to check the vendors website/support board.

Either of your GPU choices will require at least 450 watt PSU with a combined 12 Volt current rating of >20 Amps. Amps are just as important as watts here.

It's not my money but if I were you and it comes down to making the choice between settling for the 7950GT (512MB?) and your current PSU or the 8800GTS and a new SLI certified PSU, I'd drop more coin (DX10, future upgrades and compatibility, etc.), even if it means waiting alittle longer.

The 8800GTS will run just fine in XP.

where would i buy a new PSU and how expensive are they.

The PSU is very important - you can get really cheap ones, but on a good gaming rig, you want a quality PSU. Expect to pay between £50-£100 pounds and aim for at least 500watt.

Yes! Always go for a quality PSU and remember "You get what you pay for."

Hiper, Antec, Silverstone, brands among others are pretty reputable I think.

Also make sure the PSU has enough Amps and not just Wattage.

HOw much is good ampage forgive the made up word. I found this on newegg and was wondering if this was a good PSU, Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply 115/230 V TUV, UL, CUL, CE, CB, FCC - Retail. I copied and pasted the name, you can go to the website for all the specs. The thing costs 70 dollars is that too cheap? also I could not find how many amps it had.

The SP500 you list provides 17amps on the first 12v rail, and 19amps on the second.

Oh, and the real word for your "made up" term is amperage. You were very close, though.

That PSU for that price sounds about right. If you can, try to go with the highest wattage you can possibly afford. 500watts is about the minimum recommended for a typical modern gaming system, though it's usually well enough.
