Interesting O. T. read ...

I think the article is mostly true, but the conclusion is not that PC gaming will die. It's just that there will be few good games and lots of crap (hmm, it's almost like that already...). But as long as there ARE good games it's fine.

I found nothing new in the article. The fact that consoles have a larger share of the market and that a lot of games are crappy is nothing new.

I think he's a bit harsh on console gamers. I've seen plenty of PC gamers with the IQ of Peruvean tap water, and I'm a PC-only gamer myself, mind you.

The truth is that the games industry as a whole is doing a ridiculously poor job. The risks are high and the return (if things goes well) aren't terribly good, at least not in the long run. No wonder advisors tell investors to put their money elsewhere...

There are plenty of different ways one could use to make and sell games, but the biggest problem is that the industry isn't even trying.

The game industry is pretty awesome, right now. We're seeing innovation in existing genres, creation of new subgenres, lots of money for development, and, this year, a good 20 amazing looking games coming out across the wii/360/ps3/pc.

The PC isn't dying, but it certainly isn't flourishing like the 360, ps3, and wii are right now. More to the end of the consoles' life cycle we'll see a lot more pc games, and maybe another batch of alarmist 'console gaming is dead' articles, like the ones we got right before this last console generation was released. :P

As long as we (the market) keep buying games, I don't see how it could die. Where there's a market, there's profit to be made, thus there are companies to fill this market.

I think what the article is getting at is more the issue of PC Games versus Console games and how developers are having problems porting from one system to the other.

This paragraph is well said.

I don't see PC games dying. I don't see HUGE leaps in the number of PC game units sold though. It would seem to me that the console sales are going to keep climbing at a very fast rate....especially since Console Online gaming has finally taken off.

PC's over the next 10 years are going to have an increasingly smaller share of the game revenue AND decreasing share of game development dollars.....but I don't see it being much different actual units and participants.

PC gaming is going to be with us a long time. PLUS I think we are also going to see additional contributions from the PC gaming community in such things as DLC concepts and ideas.....as well as new ideas. Ghost Recon was a ground breaking game when it hit the PC and the consoles eventually got to benefit from that development. We are going to continue to see contributions from PC gaming like that.

Oh, and one other thing....this guy states....

PC Gaming is Dying

By Anthony R Brock

"I despise console gaming – always have. Perhaps it's the same reason I hate reality TV, nu-metal, and heroin: The enjoyment of each requires you to have the IQ of a glass of water"

This is just sad. This guy could have great online games with great people just like most of us do already. He could have just as much fun as he does on his PC...but I guess he will never know. I bet he never even gave XBOX LIVE a try too see if it even COULD be as much fun.

He will never even know, because he will not try it.

How sad.

All this talk of doom and gloom seems to be a symptom of the gaming community's inability to accept that PC gaming is just not top dog anymore. But gaming has always been multi-platform: Ataris and Amigas lived side by side 25 years ago after all. Just because PC has become a smaller segment of the market (it has also specialised and matured as part of that process) doesn't mean it will shrink to nothing. There will always be room for alternate platforms and here's why.

1) Developers are a creative bunch and people like Will Wright and Sid Meier will always be looking to push the envelope in ways that the mass market (console) just isn't interested in.

2) There will always be equally inquisitive players and modders (mature ones, I admit) to play these games.

3) The rise of online distribution will cut costs and ensure that creative developers get their stuff out even if big-brand publishers won't support them.

4) Even so, big publishers know they have a market in PC, albeit much smaller than consoles. None would be willing to give up their market share or the others might step in. Plain old business sense - they'll keep publishing PC games because they still sell and because the competition are doing it too.

5) It's also myth that piracy affects the PC market alone. I've been to Bangkok, Jakarta, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Colombo and all have much larger pirated console game shelves than PC. If consoles survive it, so will the PC.

6) MMO. Not my thing but apparently everyone else's.
