Rocky
Right Click on Desktop, select Properties > Appearance > Effects Smooth Edges of Screen Fonts. There are two options there, if I select standard text display is kind of weak, especially in Outlook Express and windows dialogs, the text is small and "thin" at the monitors native resolution of 1680 x 1050. Switching to clear type makes the text more readable - it looks fantastic actually, almost like a bold effect, BUT there is an issue with some characters colouring up - for example, in a white font on a black background, exclamation marks are displayed green, and the number 1 is displayed red! Mostly it is with very small fonts, the vertical stroke of most characters are giving off a green hue - quite uneasy on the eye. For example, the menu items on the left of this page are displaying the issue at 1680 x1050 for me. Anyone heard of this?
ROCO*AFZ*
Try this.... http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleart...uner/Step1.aspx I haven't experienced that issue but the above may help.
Rocky
Using that tool to turn down the cleartype contrast to the minimum allowed reduces the effect almost totally, at the expense of some of the clarity cleartype offers at the higher setting. I'll play around somemore...
CR6
Hope you get it to work. I turn on ClearType for every XP system I set up, whether it's a LCD or CRT. Can't say I've run into your problem on any LCD I've tried so far ...

Colin
Does your lcd have a monitor driver? check there website Also check GPU and driver, I ha similar prblem in adobe cs3 but new driver sorted it.
Rocky
Okay, I've spent ages doing the driver thing, tweaking, settings, clear font, yadyadayada, and I'm really now not happy with this monitor. Great for games, but desktop sucks, because there is this awful "colour bleed" on small size text. I took a screen grab from Outlook Express as an example, I blew the grab up by 8X and looked at the text, you can clearly see the text has green around it (although it looks more blue in the screengrab) , when you see that at normal size, it's like the text has a green hue - very difficult on the eye. It's even worse with white text on black bg, for example in an X-Fire chat dialog if you type an exlamation mark, it appears totally green, and the No 1 digit is displayed red! Somethings not right here surely. Anyway, here's the image, with cleartype switched on.
Nutlink
I had a blurry text issue with my nVidia drivers a while back. What version are you using now? You could try the 94.24 and see if that makes a difference. http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_94.24.html
Rocky
Thanks Nut, I updated, but effect is same. Here's what text in an XFire chat looks like - this should be white text on a black bg, as you can see it comes out red and green! I think I zoomed in about 10 times on this screen grab. Nutlink
Ouch....maybe it is just bad bleeding. Either that particular monitor model isn't very good or yours might be a lemon then. IMO it might be just a bad monitor. Also, do you have it connected via DVI or D-Sub or DVI converter?

Samsung appear to have a telephone suppot line, I'll give them a phone tomorrow and see if I can get an RMA on it
Rocky
I used cleartype tuner, and turned the cleartype effect slider all the way to the bottom, and the effect is not so pronounced, but the downside is, the text is now all faint and hard to read, lol, there is no happy medium! I'll speak with Samsung tomorrow, see what they say.
CR6
Does your lcd have a monitor driver? check there website Hey Roco, as far as I know, monitor drivers mainly have info about acceptable resolutions. Not sure if it will make a big difference ... no harm trying though Rocky: You are using the same system that you used to have hooked up to your CRT right? How did Cleartype look on your CRT? If it was OK, then it is a monitor issue. One other thing to try is swap out your video card for your old one in your wife's sytem. I would then suggest trying a different brand LCD if you can borrow one from somewhere. RMA'ing your Samsung may just prolong the issue if all of this particular model of Samsung have this problem, and it may just be best to get your money back. Acceptable resolutions yes... but they also usually load a color profile so your screen matches what colors are correct.
Rocky
Yeh I've tried all the colour profiles. Cleartype looked good on the CRT, I might plug the CRT back in just to see, it's still sitting here anyway. My brother has a 17" WS LCD, so I could round and check how his performs with cleartype tonight.

Rocky
Okay, I will try and do it tonight. The best bit though, was when I phoned Samsung support in the UK, and at the end of the convo he dropped the bombshell that if I decide to return it they cannot carry out repairs on it - even though it is under warranty, and they cannot replace it with a similar model because there isn't one. The reason? The model code I read out to him told him that my monitor was the USA model! And the UK only service UK models. So Ebuyer.co.uk source from outside the UK - one to watch. Rocky
I's be surprised if there really is any difference at all Roco. The box even came with both USA and UK electrical leads.
CR6
Hey, with ClearType being a feature of IE7 (which by the way is now available for "non-genuine" users which of course there aren't any of those people around here ... right? ) I found this cleartype tuner page - is this the same one you used Rocky? http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearT...uner/Step1.aspx
Rocky
Yep same one, the download version is best though. My blog entry covers it all, wow, I forgot how much I looked into that lol!
