ArmA or GRAW2? Hmmm, depends whether you want to play in the back yard or a national park mate ;)

You certainly have pointed out one of the key differences between the 2 games. The games are so vastly different, that both have found a home on my hard drive.

Once in a while, I see people trying to compare the 2 games as essentially the same and there fore no need for both. Nothing could be further from the truth. They are distinctly different games. I'm not saying everyone who likes one will like the other, but I like both and they most certainly very different games and expereiences. No comparison.

Only get Arma if you loved OFP, The campaign isnt much and the bugs are numerous and laggy graphics just put me off. The people who were dedicated to OFP may have the patience for BIS to slowly patch the game, but for me there are too many and i would rather be playing GRAW2.

I have to say that Pondlife is correct. Tolerating a healthy bug count in an otherwise well designed and one of a kind game is not for the faint of heart. Only certain people can do this and feel like they are having fun while waiting for additional patches. And I would never fault anyone for wanting to avoid being a uncommissioned beta tester.

But many people out there feel the expereince of being involved in a one of kind title as it matures is worth the headaches.

A classic example is the flight sim Falcon 4.0. When it was released back in '98, it was highly anticipated. The bug count was atrocious. Around 1700 formally counted in the first few months after its release. And the worst sort of bugs too. Crashes to desktop, insane missle modeling errors etc. But becuase it was obvious to the people passionate to the genre that such an amazing overall design only comes (possibly?) once in a lifetime, an enormous crowd existed that was willing to stick it out.

The game has gone through more patches than I can recall and has even re emerged as a re release/rewrite called Allied force about 7 years later. The game is highly stable now and most excellent indeed. But it literally took 8 years. Now I'm not suggesting that Arma will take nearly that long. It won't becuase its design isn't that ambitious as falcons was, but I'm just telling you that you need to pick your camp. And if you lie squarely in the camp of "I don't want to play it until its ready -I dont want to test it for 18 months (or however long)", then no one can fault you for feeling that way. Others are so committed to its design (Yes. I'm guilty), that they feel compelled to enjoy what they have, and post their bugs and issues in forums so that they might one day get close to what they really want. Its the Falcon mentality.

Tom Clancy's series have dropped to nothing more then a B rated movie. UBI is just milking the series with poor second rate games, Lockdown, GRAW and Vegas. Think about the support, one patch for Lockdown before support was dropped, GRAW supported 7 months, and Vegas doesn't look much better for the long run.

You think GRAW2 will be any different from the last three games? Support is key for any on-line community and I just don't see UBI supporting the series for the PC in the short or long term.

If you can wait a few months, Crysis and Frontlines: Fuel of War are set to be released in Sept. (you can play AA until the release of both games) Maybe even Enemy Territory: Quake Wars would be a better choice, release the same day as GRAW2, and I don't think you'll have to worry about support for the game.

7 months, 5 (correct me please) patches. Not bad support really. Think about all the stuff that has been added/fixed in GRAW. 5 mp gamemodes, AC, better AI, map editor etc.

You're right about Vegas and Lockdown though.

But I think GRAW PC got better support because GRIN was the developer. GRAW was their only project with UBI so they probably had more time to support the game.

Maybe you missed this Q&A back in June of last year: Link Here (near the bottom)

Date: June 9th 2006

Answered by: Mathieu Girard / GRAW PC PRODUCER

* Q. First of all, why not include all this content from the beginning?

A. Because GRAW PC would have then been released for Christmas 2006! Fans have been waiting for quite long for a sequel to the [Ghost Recon] and we have worked hard to offer them a great experience in terms of tactical FPS including a deep solo experience and two really exciting MP modes, both emphasizing on the strategic aspect of the game. But to make things clear, we planned from the beginning to provide additional content after the release of GRAW, and especially on the multiplayer part.

As you can see the MP side of GRAW was unfinished, and I think most players of MP would agree. Now keep in mind there was only one patch released after Map Pack 3. So in 7 months the game was finished with Map Packs plus support dropped. I don't call that good support IMO.

I call it good support when they change and ad things to the game to our liking, and of course fix things (it wasn't just game modes and maps).

Ex. They added an option to turn of tac-points in Domination. They changed GRAW coop so that the mission doesn't end if the teamleader dies. They released mod tutorials. They had a patch beta test (if they seriously didn't want to fix the game, then why have a beta test?). They added tons of fixes etc. etc.

We can argue this all day. In the end, GRiN did a great job with the resources and time they had. And its an excellent game. I see games with much larger budgets and much higher development times that arent any where near as fun and tactical as this one.

I'm thrilled I have GRAW to play these days. The summer of development and added support was awesome. Sometimes you gotta be creative and you have to compromise when you are a small/new dev group doing your first big project for a big publisher. I think GRiN should be proud that they were able to naviagate their product to the end point we have it at today in the Forrest of Ubisoft..
