When's Mitchell getting a promotion !

Recommended Posts

If I remember correctly, hes been a captain since ghost 1 (and before that I'm sure) which was set in 2005, this is 2013.. thats over 8 years as a HIGHLY decorated special forces officer. I'm starting a petition to promote MAJOR Mitchell !

Also, Joe (Jose) Ramirez is a Staff Sergent. In contact is says use your UAV to find CAPTAIN Ramirez.... what the hell GRIN !?!?!

(ps. this thread is a joke, i'm not really complaining.... I'm more concerned with proper gameplay and fixing bugs than worthless crap like this)

I think Mitchell first appeared in GR2 for the PS2 (first as in-game timeline, not real world) which was set in 2007. His next chronological appearance was GR2 for Xbox, set in 2011. So, it's been six years or so. Still, a long time. Mind you, when you have someone that talented in the field, you wouldn't want to promote them into a desk job, right? ;)

Wasn't GR1 set in 2008?

Also, UBI makes the story, GRIN are just making the game ;)

You may be right, i thought it was 2005 for some reason....not sure whos right. I dont have the game installed right now.

as stated though, it was just a joke.

actually, i believe mitchell is one of the "heros' , or specialists or whatever the unl0ckable characters are. who knows why they picked him to be the hero for GR2 and GRAW.

also, in the army, a colonel is the highest ranking field officer. when your a general you become a flag officer, or staff officer ...whatever. so if one so choosed to do so, he could still do field work. not only that.. but i personally find it kinda funny to begin with that they have a captain leading a small team. maybe thats common for special ops.. but usually for such a small team you have an enlisted man like a E5 sergant or if its an officer a leitenant 1st or 2nd class.

Actually, I think it's good that Ubi gets their backstory consistent. Joe Ramirez was officially Sergeant First Class in GR2. So who knows what Ubi has done with his rank.

Read Mitchell's official bio here:

http://ghostrecon.3dretreat.com/gr2specialists.htm

1st Lt. Mitchell returned to the U.S. in 2005, and was recruited by the Ghosts just in time for deployment to Georgia. He went on to serve in Eritrea and Cuba, where he earned the Silver Star and was promoted to Captain. At this time, he also took a Team Leader position within the Ghosts. Recently, Mitchell was slated for promotion to Major, but delayed his promotion in order to stay with the Ghosts for their deployment to Asia.

If I'm not mistaken, a 12-man "Operational Detachment-A" (better known as an "A-Team") is the fundamental building block for all Special Forces Groups. A detachment is commanded by a captain. Six detachments make up one SF company. A company is commanded by a major. If Mitchell was promoted to Major, he would be in charge of ALL the Ghosts (5th Special Forces Group, 1st Battalion, D Company).

So if Mitchell gets promoted to Major in the next GRAW, the game won't be much fun playing as Mitchell shuffling paper around a desk ;)

well according to that he was offered the promotion to major but put it off for GR2 and summit strike. So therefore by GRAW he should have been a major.... seems as if theres a blank to fill in there as to what happened. He pulled a captain kirk and resigned his higher commission so he could commande a starshipi (ghosts) ?? hahaha

by the by... in the regular army infantry and marine corps, a company is headed by a captain (sometimes a first LT. if no Captain is available). which consits of approx 4-sih platoons with approx 20 soldiers per platoon. Add up approx another 4 companies and you get a batallion which is usually commanded by a LT colonel. So I dont know what happened to a Major. Maybe a major sometimes commandes a batallion.

Anyway, it might be fun to fight as a Desk Ghost, you could get into paper football battles with Ramirez across the office and fight insurgent marketing team down the hall.

pardon my typos... I'm about half asleep.

Generaly,

A Major is a Batallion Commander XO (executive officer)

That's what people tell themselves after they are passed over by the promotion board.

Going off on a tangent (but somewhat related), one of the things that makes [GR] so good is the Platoon Setup screen where you can pick who goes on what mission and keep track of the teams experience, health, and awards. It would have been nice if this type of feature had been thought about and included in GR:AW*.

I could care less for the background story, I'd rather see some truth or consequences from the gameplay; screw up in mission#3 by losing your best gunner KIA and he's not available for the rest of the current campaign.

Discussing the TO&E of a fictional unit of a video game?

Ramirez was both an 'SFC' (quoting 'Bud here) and CAPTAIN in the first mission in GRAW. Not sure where the console versions put him, but he WAS in [GR]. MP5SD in vanilla, and by IT had graduated to the almightiest of rifles, the M4 SOCOM. WAY TO GO, HENRY!

***EDIT***

Wait, 'HENRY?!' He was a 'Henry' in [GR], and now is a 'Joe' in GRAW. Nevermind Mitchell, the amazing Ramirez brothers are FAR more scandalous! They're two different Ramirez's! And Ramirez is a fairly common Hispanic (ok, I give... LATIN) last name. Just as 'Mitchell' is a relatively common White non-Hispanic last name. Are we SURE we're talking about the same 'Mitchell' between GR2 and GRAW? I wonder...

And I wonder if Blackfoot Studios is gonna give a good hoot about Hollywood stories...

***EDIT COMPLETE***

CPT Mitchell, I don't specifically recall from [GR]. At least not [GR]/PC. Because he wasn't there, mostly. There was some other semi-hero CAPTAIN, and I don't immediately recall his name. Black fella with the OICW (as opposed to the white gal with the same weapon). Unless Mitchell went through both a name change and a Michael Jackson skin disease.

Mitchell has been a Captain for at least a few years, from GR2 through the current iteration. That's what, 2011 to 2013? Two years as a Captain, and he's already on the verge of saving the world for a third time. Not a bad career. Still, in SF he'll be lucky to ever get past Colonel.

But anyhow, why do I care? It's HOLLYWOOD! Sorta. UbiShaft's perverse take on it, anyhow. And I don't see UbiSoft Studios crossing the silver screen any time soon. Though if a movie with Samuel L. Jackson wearing a cape and Specialist (E-4) collar insignia while being called 'Sir' can make a buck at the box office, then I suppose at least us Short-Attention-Span Americans would pay to see Ghost Recon: the Movie! And since that's all the Advanced Warfighter series seems to be ramping up for (as opposed to solid tactical gameplay, working physics (inertia, boys) and antialiasing (not a problem on celluloid)), I wish UbiShaft all the luck in the world.

Personally, I'll wait for it on DVD. I hear Paris Hilton is gonna play Astra Galinsky, and I just can't stand the thought of hearing the word, 'Hawt' in a fake Russian accent...

against my better judgment, i'll say I was a captain for 7 years and declined a promotion once to stay in the job i was in. Remember real life ain't a game and there are many reasons for not making caption or major to quick. Like getting your schools, gaining experience, etc. When I was looking at getting major, there was a CAS3 school we had to go to, now it's called something else. There is a lot more to it than some of the things I have seen posted here.

I realize everything posted thus far has been in good spirits, with good intentions, and I appreciate everyone's interest in the US military and in particular in the officer corps.....but remember, NCOs (Sergeants) are the backbone of the Army, and they have an equally important job. There are no one man wrecking machines out there like in the movies, we have to work as a team.

Did some quick research by starting up GR. No Mitchell in GR, DS or IT as specialist. If his name is in there it is among the regular soldiers. But if I remember correct Mitchell was new for GR2.

You are correct. Mitchell was created for GR2. He was not one of the "generic" soldiers.

His bio retroactively places him with the Ghosts in the GR1/DS/IT campaigns.

And yes, Henry and Joe Ramirez are meant to be different characters.

well there ya go, will jacobs is a major

So is Harold "Buzz" Gordon, who is commanding the 5th SFG in GR1.

Now I didn't read any of the fiction accompanying [GR], but I DID take the time to buy the PS2 version. And I seem to recall 'Buzz'Gordon being a First Sergeant. This would preclude him from commanding anything at all, short of the proverbial dookie hitting the biggest fan this side of the Equator. Personally, I never quite got the point of a 'specialist' character carrying an M16. Seemed a bit anticlimactic unlocking him...

I had thought that Will Jacobs was the commander for [GR]. He was the best-equipped overall, anyhow. And he's probably a Major, too, serving some staff weenie job.

"Buzz" in a major in the PC version at least.

From the offical PC fiction on "Buzz".

Was one of the first soldiers assigned to the Ghosts when they were formed in 1994. Commands the assault unit.

EDIT: The boss never has the "cool" equipment. The ones he sends infront of him has. ;)

EDIT2:

More from the official PC GR1 fiction.

Captain Will Jacobs

So not a Major.
