graphics card lockups while playing Vegas

Recommended Posts

this technically belongs over at agr-s, but rocky suggested I post it here, so here it goes..

Im running an ATI Radeon x1600 Pro 512mb PCI-e graphics card, and I keep getting lockups about 5 minutes into playing Rainbow Six Vegas. Everything runs fine, and then all of a sudden my monitor acts like it loses the signal and goes into sleep mode requiring me to do a hardboot out of it.

My first thought was GPU temps, but I checked it while running the game and the hottest I got was 55c, Im also running it with a 650W Power Supply.

Vegas is patched to the latest version and I meet all of the minimum requirements to play the game. Im also running the most updated Catalyst driver.

Im thinking that im going to try and find a demo of another game with comparible specs to see how that runs.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

~Blake

Have you run any other games on the card with problems?

Does your card ever crash when you are just doing 2D desktop apps?

Is the crash reproducible (always crashes at a certain point in the game)?

I had ONE crash on GR:AW yesterday, but other then that none. I also had the VPU Recover pop up on my twice yesterday while just on normal desktop ops. Yesterday was the start of my problems. I initially thought cooling so today i removed the cover from my pc and the only crashes I had were on Vegas today. I played GR:AW multiple times today with no issues at all.

It doesnt really happen at any certain point, just after a few minutes of gameplay. I should add that when I can play the game, it runs great. Nice and smooth.

UPDATE: The last three times I have tried to play it I have gotten the lockup at the same point. On the first mission after you progress down the alley way where you were inserted. After you kill the first tango, and the tutorial tells you to cover against that half wall in that little courtyard..thats where I have been getting the crash.

1. Uninstall game.

2. Throw DVD in garbage.

3. Visit Ubi forums and respond to every "Who likes Vegas?" thread with nonsense and pure unadulterated hate for the company, devs, and especially consoles.

Now, for a more serious response....

1. Uninstall the game.

2. Delete every trace of the game from your computer.

3. Reboot.

4. Defrag.

5. Reinstall the game.

6. Install patch.

7. Defrag.

See if that helps. I had the same problem with Vegas but a simple uninstall/reinstall worked out that problem :)

On it. I'll post my findings when im back up in running. *Fingers Crossed!*

UPDATE:Uninstalled and reinstalled via your command and Im still getting the crash.

Nutlink,

Were you getting the same kind of lockups where your monitor loses signal like I am?

No, the only thing I had going on was the hard lock. I have the same problem with the Armed Assault demo (and I can't seem to get rid of that no matter what I do).

Other things to try....

1. New drivers. Try the newly released Catalysts 7.1 and see if that makes a difference.

2. Do you have a dual core CPU? If so, install the MS Hotfix and if it's AMD then the AMD Optimizer.

3. Run Memtest and see if your RAM comes up with any errors.

4. Run 3DMark06 and see if it locks on you.

Other than that I'm not sure what else might help, but I hope you get the problem fixed soon.

Blake, if you look in the AGRS forums, jsonedecker mentioned he had a crashes related to a graphics setting in the game (hardware skinning)

It's looking like R6V will tax your video card even more than GRAW does, so that's likely why you're getting the lockups.

I had a friend with a Radeon 7500 years ago with a prob with simlar symptoms - the video signal would cut out and he could only do a hard reboot to get the vid signal back. The only way he fixed it was to send the card back to ATI with a description of the problem and it was replaced.
