ROCO*AFZ* Posted January 8, 2007 Share Posted January 8, 2007 I have a customer with a server ...Ubuntu that periodically gets the to complete updates please restart the computer on there Linux machine. It bugs them some but since the software company set it up, they don't have permissions to change it. I imagine it's probably done with a cron job... but anyway... who says linux doesn't need to be restarted for updates? MS servers + don't either You set the auto update to just either #1 tell you, #2 install (doesn't ever restart unless you hit yes to reboot it) As a question though... since we deal with so few linux servers (never really took off for small businesses in this area) do they update it every night? they are getting these almost nightly. (must be a lot of patches)... And #2 it isn't giving them a choice to install it later or even telling them what they are. It just says updates are installed please reboot your computer. (which makes me thing that maybe it could be unstable until you do) Not the ideal way to do it for a server. They are out of state though and like i said the software company owns the server so we can't touch it, but it's annoying for the users. This same company also had the printers que'd throught the server with printer pooling instead of direct ip since it has a jet direct card in it. The company only has like 3 pc's and 2 printers so there is no reason for printer pooling and sometimes it would get hung up. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
firefly2442 Posted January 8, 2007 Share Posted January 8, 2007 Well, I've had my machine do it on more than one occasion. I love automatic updates but it should at least ask before restarting. I'm not booted into Ubuntu at the moment but as for their problem, there's an option in the settings that lets you download updates but not automatically install them. That way it grabs them in the background and then when you want you can click on it and install the updates you want. They must have a lot of software installed. I've had my machine go about a week before needing any updates. Unless they have it setup as a local repository for other machines to upgrade against I don't see why it's grabbing stuff every night. Would say you but you have Vista on it's way huh? Anyhow that was a list of some issues one of my clients was having. We don't own nor support the server as it's contracted with the software company. This one can execute a new kernel without rebooting all the hardware. Only works on a couple machines AFAIK though. Other than that, nothing else should IIRC. If done properly nothing else does.
