Rocky 1,224
Tonight when I fire up OE, the main window comes up, and it freezes, the panes with the email list has not appeared, and it just freezes, with the hourglass, and doesn't respond, and I have to shut it down. I am at a total loss how to proceed!
Stinger 0
I'll asume you have rebooted your computer already. Have you defragged? Whats the longest you've waited? You could try to close some of the non essential Processes via CTRL+Alt+Delete and then monitor it as it is opening, and make sure it is getting cpu time.
Rocky 1,224
The first thing I did was reboot yeh, then I ran my AVG on a full check. It found the Ganda virus I think it does alot of harm. This is what happens when your wife uses the computer when you are out.
Stinger 0
W32.Ganda.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm that sends email to the contacts in the Windows Address Book. The worm contains its own SMTP engine and attempts to use the computer's default SMTP server, or an open mail server in Sweden, for email propagation. W32.Ganda.A@mm sends two email messages with the following characteristics, in Swedish or English, depending on the infected systems' language:

Rocky 1,224
Bloody hell W32/Ganda-A infects EXE and SCR files on your hard disk by inserting a small loader program which tries to launch a copy of the worm from your Windows folder when you close the infected application. Files which are modified in this way rely on the original randomly-named worm file being present. If you delete the worm files from your Windows folder then you will immediately make any modified EXE files uninfectious. These people should not be afforded the protection of the law they have no regard for. They should be sent to the nearest LAN party for social justice. Dammit, this gets me mad. Rocky 1,224
Update : I didnt have a virus. My AVG picked up on a dummy virus file that another virus detector used for checking emails. So, I am back to square one with OE not loading for some inexplicable reason ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Dannik 43
Since OE is bundled with IE, I would recommend repairing the IE install from the Add/Remove Programs dialog. Assuming you haven't deleting the cab files, this should fix your install of OE, without removing your settings. If you don't still have the cabs, perhaps it's time to hit Windows Update? Rocky 1,224
I discovered somehting Dannik. I can open Oe by using the Mail button in IE6, and selecting the NEWS option. From there I can use newsgroups and open any mail folder as normal APART FROM one mail folder "InBox". I went into my documents and settings folder and got into the OE folder where it stores all the email. The InBox.dbx is showing as half a gig in size! That cant be right - I cleared it out totally last week - it only has 35 messages in it! So I think I need to delete that dbx file...?
Dannik 43
Make sure you back it up before deleting it (or just rename it) and see if OE will open. No point in losing your Inbox (and possibly settings although I'm not sure about that one) if that file isn't the actual problem. Mind you, it certainly sounds like the culprit. Probably full of virii and assorted garbage.
Rocky 1,224
Okay, I got a OE backup tool, and backed all 1.7Gb dbx files up. I renamed inbox.dbx to inbox.dbx.bak Restarted OE. It opened fine, with an empty Inbox, all the subfolders are intact! So, this has taken me from 2200Hrs to 0141Hrs, and I still don't know what happened to cause that - but at least I am up and running. I just hope there were not any important emails in those 37 I have lost from the Inbox!
Dannik 43
Considering the number of virus-laden emails I just received in the last 24 hours or so, I suspect whatever you lost, was worth it.
Rocky 1,224
HA! I recovered the emails! There is a tool at http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx that extracts emails from dbx files! What a learning curve this has been tonight!
firefly2442 0
I used to use Outlook Express but I don't like it anymore because it does a HORRIBLE job with viruses. It just opens up attachments and junk along with the email. Ridiculous. My virus program would catch them but that's totally unacceptable. Try getting a different program to use. That'd be my suggestion. Eudora is ok. Similar interface. Or just a web browser if possible... Or no email at all.... ok, not an option. btw- Dannik, I like the text in your sig, pretty cool. As long as OE is kept uptodate with official patches, and an AVG is operational, the risk is minimal. It doesn't open attachements.
Dannik 43
btw- Dannik, I like the text in your sig, pretty cool. Thanks! It's one of those phrases that either you get, or you don't ask about. Thus, it proves itself. Oh, and Rocky, glad to see you solved the problem AND recovered the data.
