I absolutely hate that font. I think just a plain font, lots on your pc. Something very clear and readable. Benguiat Bk BT is good too, i think its standard on windows pcs, you should have it.. le Tigre
dvd layout picture I'm trying to find the right font for the back story so its more readable. Right now I'm just using Times Roman, bold, forgot what font size. Can you guys suggest a good font for this particular layout? thanks btw if you want the psd format, let me know so I can email to you. I like the title font, but times new roman has got to go. I absolutely hate that font. I think just a plain font, lots on your pc. Something very clear and readable. Benguiat Bk BT is good too, i think its standard on windows pcs, you should have it.. The first problem I see is that you are using a sans serif font for the title, but a serif font for the back. Now while there is no rule saying you cant do this, in fact it can be done sucessfully, in this case it is creating an unneaded contrast and distraction, it was the first thing I noticed. Try a sans serif font on the back as well. (and on the spine) Secondly, Im not sure if that link is scaling down the image or not, but the font is just too tiny. That is making it hard to read. I would also try softening the font colour, I would try something just below pure black, it'll smooth it out against the high contrast back. On a side note, a lot of people claim to hat Times new roman, but really it is a great font, unfortunatly it is used everywhere (for good reason) so it is boring, and "typical" but it is the classic font. edit: Not sure if you have it or not, but I think it is a standard font, try, "tahoma" Edited December 20, 2006 by le Tigre
Cpl Ledanek
thx folks...couple of bo-bo. My original dimension is for a larger case dvd. Plus my pixels/cm is set to 72....no wonder its unreadable. I'm going 720 on the next redo. I wish I could upload a psd file so y'all can take a stab at it too

le Tigre
Here is some crtic for you. Just my opinions Over all the design is heading in the right direction, but a few things jump out at me right away. The title font works on some levels, it definatly has a hiwiian feel to it, but it is also some what comical, like dumb and dumber do hawaii movie. So its not that it dosent look good, but mabey portrays the wrong feeling. For a wedding, a script font seems more apropriate, esspecially with the imagery on the cover. The imagery by the way works well, definalty capturing the romance associated with weddings, but the two key things stood out for me right away. First is the T-intersection. The tree line is cutting directly into their heads, where they are meeting for a romantic kiss, (the key to the entire feeling on the cover), and this totally is killing the siloutte value, and distracting the viewer. It also makes them few lower in the image, and less important. By removing the tree line all togeather, the then take on all importance in the image. See below for what I mean. It is destoring the focus and power of the image. By removing that you can really help the cover along. Secondly the image was taken, on what appears to be, an over cast day. Thos lowers the dynamic range in the photo, and makes it appear flatter. By changing the values you can give the image a lot more power, and make it feel cleaner, and immediatly more pleasing to the eye. You can also increase the contrast through this change, seperating them from the rest of the image, once again giving them all the focus. The next thing is, whats with the blue ray lgo plastered everywhere? Who is this for, sony or the happy couple? Not to mention have the strong blue colour on the cover against a very neutral colour palette, makes it feel very out of place, and more important then it is. If you want to put the logo on their for clarity, (not a bad idea at all), I would just put one on the spine of the case. Same with the bar code, not sure why its there, DVD's have them because they need too, not because they look good. Those are the issues I see with it, but overall I like what you have going there. Here is an quick mock up I did based on yours, just to show you how a few of the changes can effect the overall feeling.
Cpl Ledanek
first of all, thanks for helping me see things I never noticed before. The blu-ray thing...I'm cleaning it up, and copying their standard format (Thanks to Google Image) now I see that the logo is not scattered all over. the UPC code is just to give it an authentic movie case...so far it hasn't fooled anyone the tree line, I'm going to either burn them off like you did or blur the hell out of them. the Kauai Wedding title...I agree it does feel comical, but I cannot find a Hawaiian font that has emotional feel to the cover. So I might go with a romantic font, know any? what do you suggest for the overall pixel/cm ratio, am I in the right direction with 720 pixel/cm? plus, I'm going with widescreen collection with the spine text, I'm removing that blu-disc. I'm punching out, I'll try to catch you online when I get home. Edited December 20, 2006 by Cpl Ledanek
le Tigre
UPC code is accually a font, if you search you might be able to find it. The reason I tell you this, is if you really want to include one, you could make your own, and have the numbers relate to letters, and give it a hidden meaning. With the font, it would also look more natural. One other thing I would recommend if you want to keep it, is to move it to where ot has a white background so it blends nicer, it does not have to be in the corner. you can eve rotate it. Also the bars do not have to be the full height, which while is often a standard, is not required for them to work, you can cut them down so it is wider than high. I dont know any good hiwaiian font either, as far as a more romantic font, I dont have any names off hand, or on this machine, but any script font, or hand written style, is the right direction. There are thousands out there, if you look you will definatly be able to find a free one, just use the word "script" in your search and you will find lots Im sure. You probally have one or two on your machine already. For the tree line, I accually just painted it out with the brush tool, but anything will work. Your pixel ratio is high, but there is nothing wrong with that at all, a high resolution is a good thing, its low resolutions that get you in trouble. I ussually work at about 120 pixels/cm (.approx 300 pixels/inch) But a know people that work alot higher than that, so aslong as you are not too low, you're fine.
