New Missions?

Is anyone working on new missions (not rescripts, but whole new ones?) for GRAW?

I was thinking on something. Actually, HAVE BEEN since right after I got my paws on the game. SOEMWHERE I wrote all this down, but there are several missions mentioned in some way in the game that you never see or hear about. Jennifer Burke's mission at the airport to clear out the rebel ADA. Someone else had the mission to secure the stadium. Steven Chang had the city's East Side. Salvatore had to GET to the hilltop he died on, right? How about CPT Foster getting his team to Camp Chapultapec? Abrew and Bolan (sp?) escorting VIP2 to the US Embassy? I mean, there's a ton of missions in there that get mentioned and never get used. And we're clearly not looking forward to any expansion action since UbiShaft already made an official announcement of the GRAW2PC release for Q1, 2007. GRIN has to do what they get paid to do, of course.

But anyhow, while I suck with anything artistic, don't have 3DS, and can't even spell XML, if someone were willing to look into the matter of writing those missions, you can be assured that I'll help in any way I can learn to...

Interesting idea. The biggest problem I see is that you wouldn't actually be any of these people. You'd still be Cpt. Mitchell just doing their missions. I wish I could help but I'm still way down at the bottom of the mission-building ladder so it might be a while before I had the skillset to attempt any of those. Maybe someone else will though?

Unless I've been away too long, I thought Wolfsong has his mission still in the works right?

It is "done". What I need is to generate a better lightmap. It just hasn't been top priority as I have to do it at work (my computer at home is to old). I'll try to run a lightmap render next week. I have it done with a lowres lightmap and it's then a 1,5Mb download.

I also have two "testers" that wanted to play the map, from whom I'm still wainting for feedback. None other then two Grin employees, Bo (GRAW2 Director) and Stig (GRAW2 Producer).

what id like to see is someone with skills build some new statics and props for mappers to use or even figure out how to use all the props and statics that came with the game all together

The tutorial on how to make props covers it all. You just havt to know how to use 3DS Max before using it. Stats is a bit more work, but I think I got the hang of most of it from the level tutorial. So I guess it's mostly because people doesn't try enough. It should be much easier then adding weapons, which is where most of the activity to add graphics has been centered oddly enough.

But the second part makes me wonder a bit more. Which props and stats doesn't people know how to use? Please explain what problems there are as it increases the chance to get a helpful answer. ;)

In what way is the restriction implemented?

I know you decide which type to use when you create a new map in the editor.

And I guess all props are always in the list. So is it just that they are not showing their textures, but the blue/yellow checker in game?

yes you can only use city specific props if u use it in ghetto for instance it shows up blue and yellow so when u go to create a map you get to choose city, ghetto, ind and then can only use the right props

Then I do know how to solve it the ugly way which is to allow all texture atlases for the map, which isn't a good solution... but I'll check if the nice way is possible early next week.

On the texture problem:

I've tested and found another way... but it's not worth it as it requires more work then rebuilding a map in the editor would. So if you really need to combine tilesets, simply edit the texture_scope. But beware of how much you add in there... Adding only part of another tileset scope (the part you're using of course) would be a lot better then adding all of that tileset. Check the texture scope XML file under "local/your_unbundled_folder/setting" to see all the scopes and what are inside them. You can use either the surrounding name are that of any of the sub parts.

Dude you're telling me it's taken two months to get a custom mission done? I mean I understand you got real life stuff but seriously, it's taken this long?

Depends on your skill ofcourse, but remember unlike teams like grin its only 1 man doing everything on the map and it takes time.

The final game had like 15 maps? im sure there are more than 15 developers working on the maps and i belive it took more than a year but im just guessing. Much of the time is also used on planning the layout.

The final game had like 15 maps? im sure there are more than 15 developers working on the maps and i belive it took more than a year but im just guessing. Much of the time is also used on planning the layout.

Ah. The mission. I actually haven't touched it since... late November. The problem is that I can't do anything with it at home as I don't have a computer to even start GRAW on. So everything has to be done at work when I have time to spare. The mission took about a month to do. I just have to have time to let the computer generate the lightmap... which takes a lot longer then I can be without the computer when I'm working.

Ahh okay. Sorry man it's been a slow weekend. Maybe give it to somebody for the lightmap? Matter of fact it should be like the lowest settings (GRIN_Willie might be able to suggest the settings, as I don't remember) for it, as if it's crashing that could be the issue as that's what I tried to do while testing MP Pack 3 and he gave me those suggestions (or another GRIN person) but the lowest isn't a concern due to the game engine will render it as normal. I think it's more of a bug, so give it a whirl and it may work out when you can.
