Top 5 console games for 2006

Recommended Posts

What would you say are the top 5 console games for 2006?

You can mix console systems (360 and PS2) in your top five or you can list only games in one system (all 360), but please identify the system with each game.

Also include why those you chose those. :)

All are Xbox 360 games, naturally. ;)

1-Rainbow Six: Vegas

It's Rainbow and it's done RIGHT. Closest thing to gaming perfection to date on the 360, in my opinion. They captured the best of the older games and still advanced the series at the same time. The cover system, weapon feel, and ablities you have in this game are 2nd to none. Even a good storyline, and the most interesting real-life weapons in a shooter. PEC is finally something you WANT in a Rainbow game. Very well done customization options. This is the game that offers the best combination of SP, co-op, MP and customization in one package. Even if not THE best in each individual area, it comes pretty darn close. Ok, I think it's the best in all areas, but I'm biased. ;) Definitely the most game for your $60 for any 360 game. Has bugs, but also has had VERY good communication with the fans ever since it's announcement, and that still seems to be the case with the patches needed. That means a LOT to a fan.

2-GRAW

Very well done MP and SP was good too. Co-op was lacking though, but still a very solid game that I'm still happy to play it due to MP set up. Needed more large maps at release, the DLC was costly and there need to be more weapon options in SP campaign. Still, GRAW is a game you can come back to anytime and enjoy, just like previous games in the series.

3-Chrome Hounds

Strategic shooter that is outside of the mainstream... the persistent war should be considered as almost a standard for all tactical shooters. More customization options than you can shake a stick at.

4-Oblivion:

Not my kind of game, but there's no doubt that it was incredibly well done with a few nice doses of continuing meaty content for purchase and download. Other than the horse armor.

5-Gears of War:

VERY well done SP, even if short is fun and replayable...co-op the way co-op should be done. I hope that more games will look to the co-op here as canon. If GRAW had this co-op...wow, what a time sucker that would have been. Graphics are that which other games shall be judged. MP is not bad, but very limited and not enough to hold attention. MP is where a game shows real legs for staying power, so that lands GOW in 5th. If it had a few details tweaked and bigger MP, it would be a contender for the #2 spot.

Is this topic going to work? These people on this site are kind of shy and don't normally provide opinions. I will give it a go. Mine are all 360 games. Nothing on GC, PS2, or PS3 caught my interest.

Top Game

XBOX 360

GRAW

Arguably the most adult game of any title for ANY console, this game continues to break new ground on gameplay and graphics while maintaining three very important principles:

1. weapon balance from snipers to assault rifles

2. basically a one hit kill system with random aiming (no aim assist)

3. a very "real" non-arcade experience overall

The co-op is exemplary with the exception of some moronic AI and superman X-ray vision AI.

2nd place

XBOX 360

UNO

An old classic game that is inexpensive to download and GREAT fun with friends. This game continues to generate evenings of good clean fun. The inetgration of the LIVE XBOX CAM brought three other friends right into my living room. Often abused in public rooms, the camera adds a dimension to your XBOX LIVE friends that you just can't get in any other game.

3rd place

XBOX 360

Oblivion

The extensive environment is un-precedented in scope and detail. The graphics were a little off (look up at a tree and spin, you will see what I mean) but overall hours of great fun. On a cost per hour of entertainment this game is GREAT value.

4th place

XBOX 360

Chromehounds

What can we say, the advent of a live interactive "war" across a map against other people playing on one of three factions has been done before...but never this accessable. Add to that a vehicle customization unparalelled in consoles made this game a 2006 hit. I probably spent as much time designing my mechanized creations as I did playing the game. Great fun.

5th place

XBOX 360

Test Drive Unlimited

The first racing game that 1. I actually thoroughly enjoyed playing and 2. found that I was able to complete all the tasks. While probably not for the most serious racers among us, the "oneness" of the entire island and frightningly "real" Hawaii road experience is a must try. Being able to drive any direction at any time for hours was more than sweet, it was a new experience.

Honorable Mention

XBOX 360

Rainbow Six: Vegas

The series improved on some un-balanced sniper weaponry by completely eliminating the effectiveness of the sniper. This and a few other key mistakes keep it out of the top 5. A great game though. This game also requires several fixes to make it effective.

XBOX 360

Call of Duty 3

A great game, but without a lobby system this game is just way too hard-core to enjoy with friends. If you want a night with no breaks and going to bead shaking...this is your game. Possible fixes in the works could launch this game to the top of my play list.

Gears (360) -1

My kind of game, and undeniably near flawless.

Final Fantasy 12 (ps2) -2

Not my kind of game, really, but undeniably near flawless.

Zelda, twilight princess (wii) -3

The best Zelda game ever.

Okami (ps2) -4

The best Zelda clone ever.

GRAW (360) -5

360's only solid online game all year.

Am I the only one on this website who actually plays anything but shooters and sports games?

No, it appears Ick plays Uno... .unless that is considered a sports game.

I play my share of consoles, but mostly for Sega or SNES (dating myself here). I guess I need to kick my son off the PS2, XBox or Gamecube and try some recent games.

On the PC I play a lot of card games.
