Ruin 17
I don't get it... people I don't know are able to use the messaging system that comes with WinXP to send me spam. Is there a way to stop this?
Aggressor 0
Ruin, I know what you mean , I thought I was the only one. Are you using any unofficial add-ons like Messenger Plus, cause I started getting Instant Messages about adult content when I started using the program.
Stinger 0
What ports does the program use? Once we know that we could jus block the whole prgrm unless you like it. Otherwise somewhere in the prgrm there should be a preferences tab like in AIM that allows only your "buddies" to talk to you.
Ruin 17
@Aggressor; I'm not using anything extra. Nothing new anyway... @Stinger... it's a built in feature with XP. It's used to help you communicate with users in a network. No good on one lonely PC though...

Okay...thats odd, sounds more like NETSTAT to me if its just for networks. Next time it comes up find what process it's using and then search for the file. Then delete that bad pos. Or if you can tell me the the process name is that would be find and I could research it more for you. Oh, any chance the .exe is under here G:\Program Files\Messenger ? firefly2442 0
Is it shooting up annoying ads and so on or are they people you know? I've had lots of messages pop up that are just crummy advertisements. I donwloaded a patch to stop WinXP from allowing this kind of connection.
Ruin 17
They're ads Firefly... where'd you get the patch?
RooK 0
There is an easy way to get rid of messenger, or at least disable it First, make sure you're in the administrative account. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services > Services (Local) and look them over. The one of particular interest is Messenger. Just go ahead and disable the sucker. If you run into errors or problems afterwords, you can always go back and set it to it's original setting. Also, of note in this window is Event Viewer (Local). It will give you a list of past - present errors and notices your computer has went through.
firefly2442 0
Oh yeah, that's right. Just follow Rook's instructions. Guess it was just an issue with the services.
Ruin 17
Thanks Rook. Can't wait to get it over with... Gotta reboot in Safemode though... ukh.
snakebite1967 0
actualy go to services.msc and scroll down youl see windows messenger it isnt actualy msn messenger its a service built into xp with sp1a just change it to disabled and that will end all spam attacks without disabling messenger

magnumkp 0
You can block messengers from people who aren't in your allowed list, that shouild stop it, but also anyone else who wants to contact you.
Crimson 0
Heres what I did: Go into your Program Files folder, and find the Messanger folder, and rename it to anything. Boom, done. Now it wont start up with the computer, it wont log in when I open Outlook, hell, it wont do anything now.
