Rocky
Looks like EA has a firm commitment to dynamic adverts in all it's top titles, I just read Need for Speed Carbon is going to have the same thing as BF1942.
CrowmanUK
Wonder how much that will generate on a per copy basis?

Rocky
Thats awful, anygame I know that has that I wont buy .. simple as that. Realistically, I can see people who say that playing very few games next year, IMHO. This potential source of income for publishers is going to be to good to miss out on. Unless there really is a huge up swell of dissent.
Parabellum
I guess I won't be buying any EA games in the near future.
Rocky
It's not just EA, they are not even the first, it's not even their technology. I fully expect to see more publishers jump on this bandwagon.

Duh, please what are "dynamic adverts" & how do they appear in-game? dynamic adverts are ads that are in motion. they appear in billboards, in-game....I'll shut up now...after these commercials. el nino foxhound
I think maybe one, one and a half year ago I saw a gameshow where they were talking about this and its possibilies. They could even see what add would be most succesfull so they could adjust add content in the streaming. Dont ask me for sources or whatever, its been to long ago. Talking about addware this is one major blow. But its like Rocky says, nothing to do about it. Sure you can say I wont buy those games, but in a few your you will be playing hide and seek on your own somewhere. If prices for games will not rise to much thanks to this a lot of people will smile.......not that I think that will be, but for those who always think developers are there not to make money but to give us the games we want. Just my unbased 1 cent.......I am dutch so I sit on my money
Dai-San
Thats awful, anygame I know that has that I wont buy .. simple as that. Realistically, I can see people who say that playing very few games next year, IMHO. This potential source of income for publishers is going to be to good to miss out on. Unless there really is a huge up swell of dissent. Rocky is dead on the money. I would buy as many games as you can NOW tbh because by this time next year I can't see any online game that will not have 'Some' form of in game advertising so you are going to need plenty of old games to play. No publisher is going to deliberately cut off a potential stream of extra income, especially one that requires nothing more that a server supplying ads. The only way to stop this is to hit them where it hurts (in the wallet) and the only way to do this would be for enough people to boycott buying the games and cause the revenue to drop below the level which the ads generate. If we are all honest then this ain't going to happen. Will YOU seriously not play an absolutely fantastic tactical shooter, with amazing graphics, great gameplay, multiple online modes, that all your mates and squad mates are playing just because of a few ads on billboards that tbh you probably wont even notice? I am honest enough to admit that as much as I hate the idea of in game ads, for a game like that I will probably ignore em and buy it anyway. Hell, thats how politicians get elected year on year, public apathy

Poita
I have a strang reaction to this. I hate ads so mucht that i never watch tv i just download shows. and i never listen to radio with ads. However i like realistic environs in games and when i see a 'joe blogs' coke machine in a level i just wish it said coke or pepsi. If i'm in a driving game or a shooter on a street and there are bill boards with ads on them just the same as in the real world then i wouldnt mind. If they changed content when i logged on it would give the game some variety. My guess though is that they would get greedy and the ads would end up being in your face too much. Also, i'm happy if dev houses can get extra income but i dont think for a moment it will lower game prices. Steam has cut out so much cost for valve but HL2 wasnt any cheaper. On prinsicple i think that with restraint the ads thing could enhance the imediacy of a game but in reality it will get intrusive.
REDMONSTER
also you all are complaing about the ads. think about this. if a game doesnt make a company will they keep makeing pc games? with all the demans and the devlomnent cost now dayds they can eather raise the prices of the games and how happy will the gamer be then? or they can do these ads which will bring the $ in from the PC side and just might make them make better games. think about that ebfore you get ######. how much does the comapnys make per title sold now days with all of hte costs involved? also the ads could lead to longer and better patching of games. It's not so much the ads that bother me. If they were just static Coke and Pepsi adds (for an example) that were installed with the game and changed periodically, I'd be fine with it. But the notion of some company monitoring (for lack of a better term) my surfing habits, then placing ads in games accordingly bothers me. I sure as hell don't let people follow me around on a daily basis and monitor my activities, and I'm not going to let people monitor me on the internet either. Game manufacturers can kiss my white ass if they think I'm going to let them put spyware on my PC. God knows what other information they're collecting. Rocky
... But the notion of some company monitoring (for lack of a better term) my surfing habits, then placing ads in games accordingly bothers me. It would bother anyone, it is such an invasion of privacy, however nowhere do EA say they will monitor anyone's surfing habits, in fact they specifically stated that is not the case. I think if that was the case it was be such a huge PR disaster that any benefit from such an advert stream would be overshadowed by loss of sales from disgruntled gamers. The thing about ads in games, it doesn't really bother me too much, until I stop to think about what happened to ads on websites. Unobstrusive static ads on game billboards are fine, it's no different from real life, but think what ad companys have done to website ads to make sure we notice them. Ads flashing at 100 FPS in neon colours anyone? CLICK ME NOW flashing at you around the next corner? How about, CATCH THE MONKEY/DUCK, or YOUR PC IS INFECTED CLICK HERE NOW!!! on the next sign? That's what bothers me, by all means stick a few adverts in to help finance a game, but for goodness sake, don't let advertisers spoil the game experience in the process. I dont have TV on the basis of advets and general reality show cack they pummel us with even if theres a "fantastic programme / channel coming out" I wont play a part, and also the fact that a shooter so good as you describe would need me to upgrade a pc spending even more money to run damn the thing, only to get it and have adverts = goodbye games I will stick to what I have thanks. Just becuase the adverts wont be intrusive to the eye so you wont notice them while playing does not mean the system and process in place behind the scenes for this process "over time" wont get moulded and more powerfull with feeding back information. Once the gate is opened and people accept it, it will be milked to death as usual. I want to have fun online, we did without ads ... now I cant soon get a game with this sytem in place. You need to get in the mind of the marketers & ad companies, having them direct through into your game when you just want some fun, can, in my book ... sod off. Stick some ads in the manual, stick some ads on the intro, stick some ads in the credts, stick some ads on the installer ... dont LIVE & DYNAMIC send me while playing a game and giving them the door (backdoor / opportunity / potential / angle) to peep in while doing so. Isnt the net with its ads good enough, we nearly all use the net to find about the games to buy them that have ads all over the place, and yet we need (do we?) another angle media/platform interupted with it . What you stated there Ranger is why they get away with it and also what they are depending on . Ok, you have a game that rules, you play it ... you know it has ads dynamicly, you ignore them, you dont notice them. So ... if thats the case, the question is .. why is it needed then? So you will install a game with this process bound to it knowing access to the game from ad companies (3rd party access, with initial concent .. but then while running over time how much is that changed) but becuase you know you wont even bother to use it you will accept it into your game? Options to kill it, or it should be as an optional plugin install / add-on is the only way to go .. tied into the games code direct is not. The argument ref being online in itself is the same, but at tleast so far gaming online was just simply playing a game and at least you can protect yourself to a certain extent online by your own choosing, cant see in games where that will be. If anyone thinks that it will just be a simple process of popping a picure in a slot and thats it then fair enough, I dont agree, I see it as an opportunity to take it further later down the line. I would say for purpose of this thread start posting links to background details of the system(s) in place for this, who runs it, what companies will take part, what servers, location .. find out all you can about this one subject from the game right up to the location of who is mining the data ... sound paranoid right? Well, no ... its just that a log someplace of info for this is good for everyone seeing as we are here for games and we will all be effected . Or ... make sure you get a game with a real strong single play element and stick to that, use your firewall to block its net access ... bish bosh. I think from mullingover it, if a game has it encoded- no choice .. no buy, if its optional on install as an add on and I can still play online without it or a server can run without adds on and people linking can use the server with the advertising add-on not installed (I do mean not installed, not just a tick box in settings and the files still have to be installed, as I dont trust that either) .. just the core game, I would consider it. I pay for it (the game) "I" choose if I want adds within it or not, they dont assume I do. If the advertisers / companies want to advertise "through" >MY< game "I" purchased they need my concent, give me that choice on install the right way and no little install tricks then fine, if not .. goodbye game. Of course ... this is my own view, you like it, go for it.

calius
Good news! It also includes dynamic advertisements and user tracking features when installed. Adware, ho! @ Dannik - this is from the thread "National Gueard Game - PRISM" ... So whats the scoop on "user tracking features" ? Or was that just a joke? Well if not, spill the beans whats the wonderful features of this part of the game? Thought Id post in here as it was on topic etc.
CrowmanUK
Maybe theyre thinking that terrorists use this stuff to train with so by putting any tracking/logging software on they can keep tabs on them?
Sup
Probably just normal adware stuff. Tracks what kinds of sites you go to, adds it all up, and spits out an appropriate ad.
