PC getting Shafted

Recommended Posts

Ok I am going to put my thoughts down of what’s happening.

GRAW came out on Xbox before PC and from what I see on the Xbox is just much smoother. It is a darn shame you have to have some SLI or crossfire or a ridiculously expensive graphics card to run GRAW on PC at a steady 40 FPS.

Ubi seen that there upsetting all the PC gamers from the [Ghost Recon] series so they decided to launch a PC version of GRAW but not from Red Storm. They did not even decide to use the same engine. Instead we get a contractor called grin to make the game. Then they decide to use the diesel engine which is the worst for a graphics intense game. This is like when you try and get a job then you find out the job position is actually contracted through a agency and your not working for the actually company. Therefore you get paid half of what the job is really worth. Therefore we get half the game of what we should be getting.

There are so many bugs in GRAW PC that it should not even be released yet. Even with the release of like 5 or 6 patches the game still is terribly buggy. Over 200 meg patches and game is still not processing the textures consistently. I have a 7800 GT over clocked and GRAW has lag on it on single player. My system is 64 3800 dual core with 2 gig RAM with 7800GT OC. Even with textures on medium the game is slow.

So I guess what I am trying to say is us PC gamers are getting shafted. It really is a shame that it’s like this. Really is…..I am glad I did not register my game because I’m going to sell it to someone who doesn’t know any better. I am not trying to offend anyone but this seams to sum all of it up for us PC gamers. We don’t even have enough tournaments with GRAW to come close to all the ones on Xbox. Now with GRAW 2…… lol. Some of you ask what platforms will be supported….well use that common sense. The PC version will have to be made by Grin….which in turns means its going to run slow and buggy. See you guys on some other game I am out.

Myth. Granted I have a 7900GTX now, but when I was running the game on a 6800XT, the game ran fine for me at 1280x1024, med settings. A steady 40-50fps, but I was bottlenecked by my CPU (which has changed as well). If you get a lot of lag during heavy firefights and explosions, it's a good chance your CPU is the problem. Not directly at you, but people should take a little more care with their PCs. This game runs decent on a 9800Pro at low settings/800x600. Not bad, but then again people will be saying the same thing when Crysis is released.

Considering reviews (look up metacritic, I'm too lazy to point the link again) the game received rather good reviews overall from almost everywhere. It's almost on par with GR1. Like many developers have stated before, it's hard to create a good game for a small niche while trying to make it good enough for your average gamer. Like tactical shooters.

I bought a 7800GT to replace my 6800XT (which was upped to a 7900GTX thanks to EVGA's step up program) paired with a Athlon 64 3200+. Same card, and the single core version of your CPU. The game ran quite smoothly for me (med textures as well because high textures causes lots of studdering due to the size of the textures). Their might be other problems with your system.

I agree with the first part, the PC gamers are getting shafted, but not only with GRAW. Take a look at BF2142. It is nothing more than a mere mod for BF2 (same engine, same bugs, same everything except a little different gameply...oh, and ingame advertising).

However, as for saying if GRIN developes the PC version of GRAW 2 will mean the game will be slow and buggy.....then what does that say about RedStorm and Lockdown?

If you feel the game is buggy and slow and not worth playing, that is your opinion, and I can respect it. To a certain extent I even agree with you on a lot of it. There are some things, though, that have shown me otherwise. To each his/her own though.

I must first admit that the OP is correct in the assumption that PC gaming is getting shafted. It is nice observation which is rather accurate, especially if you look at how the e-gaming have developed during the last decade. And also I don’t believe in a GRAW 2 for PC, at least not as soon as the game is announced now.

Unfortunately this problem is not dependent of GRAW, GRAW PC, GRIN or even Ubi (yes that is tight folks, even if some won’t take their eyes from that ball).

I don’t want to present a completely known fact for the readers, but the structural issues with pc-gaming are very much a problem emanating from the platforms and the company’s backing them. They got the money and they want to earn more money. That is the way it is quite simply. PC-gamin doesn’t have any hardware company which can back the pc-gaming as e.g. Microsoft and Sony does with their hardware.

This also point towards the OP’s reference of the laddering community being bigger for X-box, well most people working for Microsoft X-box would have to seek another job if things were reversed. There is no way that X-box with its current position could botch this and get a smaller community for the platform. X-box is dirt cheap and GRAW PC demands a rather new pc (not high end as some consistently tries to tell people).

But if we does not compare with X-box – which is folly if you want to discuss a single game and not the industry – and see to the pc-GRAW laddering itself. Then I would say that the laddering is getting stronger and stronger. One has to bar in mind that MP-gaming got “its” patch rather recently (which is a sign according to some that the game still is being bad). PGL for example gets new teams each week and the team ladder got 32 teams at the moment. That is more than enough for a ladder to be interesting.

As Nutlink wrote, it isn’t that hard to get good fps. And the game is still playable and you are still competitive online with about 30 fps.

Then the old issue about patches, those who have decided to tell the world that the game is bad only see patches as proof of something good and the other part of the community… well you get it, don’t you.

It would be nice of an OP of such a thread as this one to actually point out which bugs he refers too when he phrases something like “[after] 5 or 6 patches the game still is terribly buggy”. I play the game and do know of a handful of bugs which irritate me and perhaps one that ticks me off (disconnection galore). None of them is a real game breaker, and even better GRIN is still supporting the game, as in: patching it (which is a proof of the game being bad according to some).

Well, well there is more to say about this. Nevertheless, I rest my case.

@ Gripen what all the patches mean is, the games buggy and still has alot of issues. why don't the reviwers for GRAW take that into consideration? why don't they install the game and every damn patch and review it objectively?

Try a defrag...

My Co-Leader runs less and can play with it cranked at about 80-100 fps...

i agree defag and lose a few shatty windows programs running in the back ground and i can play graw smoothly on a barton 3200(32 bit) running at 2.2 ghz 2 gig of ocz ram and a x800xt pe all at standard settings.

personnaly i couldnt belive how much a defrag makes a difference

Yep I'm agreeing with all the above and {B:P:R}Joker, I have a near enough identicle system and i run all on high either at 1024 x768 or 1280 x 1024 and it plays very well for me, But i do make sure my system is clean, minimise background progams and a regular defrag. (oh and ATI overclocked)

When XBOX LIVE came out it really opened the door to online gaming to a whole community that never had it....and I don't mean kids either. It seems to have taken a while for things to move as a lot of XBOX owners didn't purchase LIVE.

Now that the 360 has been out for a while it seems to me that things are changing VERY fast. I don't know what the numbers are in terms of LIVE usage...but I personally know people that have been gaming for years, and now with the 360 they have finally chosen to cross that line to online games.

Wit the PS3 having a LIVE equivalent coming out soon........there are going to be A TON of changes in gaming till next year this time.

This is all DIRECLY going to impact PC games in a BIG BIG way.

Gears of War, Call of Duty 3, and a TON of other huge titles hitting this season with GRAW 2, Halo Wars, and Halo 3 coming out after........things are going to change for the worse for you guys. Would you agree?

To a certain extent there are only so many investent dollars and industry resources to go around....and if the market demands console games and margins/ residual royalties are better there.......money talks.

Ok patches mean that a game still has issues after a patch? That is one take on patches. I can agree that most games always need a patch as there always is an "issue" with games. My take on patches is that games gets improved by them, not retain

"issues".

Try telling that to the Ravenshield gamers. while the patches DO bring new features, Graw's brought new features and new issues like Anticheat disconnects, abnormal disconnects, nade bug goes away with one patch, then returns in the next patch(Ask ROCOAFZ) on that one ;) just to name a few.

GRAW is like a firework that is supposed to shoot 200 feet in the air but just pops up 6 inches and sputters out.

Actually at 200 meters the nade works... it's at 10 meters or less that you get the sputter....

Hmm good analogy... Todays hardware - sputter but next years work!

Sounds like nades to me ;)

and if you have ever experienced the nade bug... you see your nade fly and hit the target... others see it sputter and drop a foot infront of you. then you crash.

Now let me use your analogy a little better.

Graw is like fireworks... that is susposed to take off and cause and explosion in the gaming community.

The 1st one shoots... 25 feet. Burn a few people on that one.(the ones that thought it was a remake of GR1)

So they go... lets add a little gunpowder since the community is demanding it.(gr1 like features)

2nd one goes about 75 feet, but doesn't quite make the explosion (patch 1.21)

Hmm lets add a a few colors the the mix and some more powder as the community demands it.

3rd one goes back to 25 feet (nade bug returning) but has the colors that wow the people (sads and console)

(Some got burnt again)

4th time... back the the drawing board... but were using a lot longer fuse so we can make sure the wind is correct and the storms are clear to make our 200 feet goal with all the colors and boom the community wants. (hence the delayed patch)

and then out comes the backup plan... we'll draw more of the community with an announcement of GRAW2, if this thing doesn't take off and nukes everyone else watching

The end.

Now that my friend is an analogy.

I don't have too much of an issue with the nade bug. I have personally had people exploit the old system against me, where you run into someone point blank in a building. They could point a GL on your chest and push the Win button. Theres no explosion, you die, and they're just fine.

Under the current system, the person who shoots a gernade too close to themself dies of embarrassment after dropping to desktop. Darwin Award contention right there...

Ah...just like the Gold PP7 in James Bond 007 for N64...

And I agree with you to some extent. I can understand the frustration with campers noob-tubing anyone who crosses their path, but tonight I was playing some [GR] Coop and needed "the tube" to clear out wreckage from a helicopter that had blocked the path between buildings. I backed up a good ways...fired away...and crashed to desktop. I never take the tube into TvT rounds, but I find it useful in Coop missions.
