KillerKane
Kane here Kudos to budgie for mentioning "Come and See" - I haven't seen it but its reputation is superb. My 5: 5) Talvisota (aka The Winter War) - 1989 Finnish movie commemorating the 1939 Soviet invasion. 4) The Battle of Algiers - 1965 Italian-Algerian movie filmed documentary style handling the French war in Algeria. 3) Saving Private Ryan - what more can I say? 2) Platoon - ditto 1) The Longest Day - no other epic length WWII movie comes close to handling the scale of this film. So what if it's cliched and they cast Peter Lawford as Lord Lovat! Interesting trivia note: the piper who accompanies Lovat in the movie was the same man who piped for him in the actual battle! Honorable mentions: Glory, Gettsyburg, We Were Soldiers, Battleground, Black Hawk Down, Lawrence of Arabia. So many great films. MarkVanDamme
I'd say Das Boot Cross of Iron / Dambusters Full Metal Jacket Platoon Band of Brothers (not really a film) not in that order
Guest Jester
The Great Escape The Green Berets M.A.S.H. Kavkazsky Plennik We Were Soldiers I can't name my top five -- "war films" is too broad a category. There are different sub-categories that deal with different aspects of things and I have many, many favorites for different reasons in those categories. I have, however, chosen five very good ones, listing them in no particular order. I've never seen Kavkasky Plennik dubbed in English (assuming you can find it in English - I've never tried), so I don't know how good the translations are -- it's hit or miss with foreign films, in my experience. Meprolite
Not one single mention of the greatest war movie of all time? If you haven't seen it, check out The Longest Day. The Duke and Robert Mitchum oozing machismo over damn near 3 hours worth of classic war drama. It's too old to be as slick or as gory as SPR, but its still the single best account of the D-Day landings that has ever been captured on film. Grab a flag, and go do yourselves a favor. EDIT: "...its still the single best account of the D-Day landings that has ever been captured on film" Not strictly accurate since Band of Brothers. My apologies. magnumkp
I don't watch many films, last time I went to the cinema was about 2 years ago. Never seen a star wars film all the way through, or harry potter and whats all this lark about lord of the rings? Anyway, in no particular order: Escape to Victory Great Escape (Great theme tune) Sparticus (Its got a war in it, goes on a bit.) Saving Private Ryan Where Eagles Dare (? I think thats the one with an assination attempt on Churchill, I know it had eagles in the title) They might not be the best war films, only the ones I remember watching. Guest Jester
Where Eagles Dare (? I think thats the one with an assination attempt on Churchill, I know it had eagles in the title) . You're thinking of The Eagle Has Landed with Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland. Where Eagles Dare has Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton and is another good one, though (not to mention a good Iron Maiden song).
Guest Jester
If you haven't seen it, check out The Longest Day. The Duke and Robert Mitchum oozing machismo over damn near 3 hours worth of classic war drama. Actually, it was on my list, along with Midway, but I decided to limit it to five, even though I wasn't picking my true 'top five', as I already explained. col.moschin
1) "Combat Film series" after 50 years still a masterpiece, no "embedded" reporters wearing CK or Armani, but the real face of war filmed by soldiers in the fireline. 2) "Saving Private Ryan" 3) " Full metal jacket" 4) "Hamburger Hill" 5) "platoon"

KillerKane
Kane here I can't believe some of you mentioned "Red Dawn" - that was a terrible movie. Right wing propaganda at its worst. "Enemy at the Gates" serves a great public service by portraying the Soviet war experience on film for the first time. Only now after the Cold War has ended can their struggle be fully known, and they paid a savage price for victory. Stalingrad was only the best known battle, with Kursk being a close second. Australia put out two great war movies: Peter Weir's "Gallipoli" with a young Mel Gibson, and Bruce Beresford's "Breaker Morant" - a stunningly well acted movie. I loved "Where Eagles Dare" - even though it was preposterous and ridiculous, it was very watchable with its two stars, a great script, and non-stop action. "Kelly's Heroes" was good too. Can no one remember some of the great WWII movies made during WWII? I vividly recall "The Immortal Battalion" and "In Which We Serve" from Britain, and "Sahara", "Guadalcanal Diary", "Five Graves to Cairo" and "Bataan" from the US, to name but a few. "Patton" will always be a personal favorite. Even though it was riddled with historical errors, George C. Scott's performance makes his movie a must-see. Gregory Peck's "MacArthur" and Robert Duvall's "Ike" (a TV movie) just do not come close. That opening scene with Scott, and Jerry Goldsmith's score that just grab you and do not let go.
