Rocky 1,224
OMG this gets me mad. I just paid for PSP Media Manager 2 from Sony (even though I already paid for v1 - Sony want us to pay again for an upgrade.) The main motivation was for a new feature that meant this desktop app would now trasnfer word or excel documents to the PSP for viewing (it does this by converting them to html and viewing in the PSP browser). I couldn't get it to recognise xls or doc files though. After testing like mad, I eventually discovered this.... you actually have to have MS Word and Excel INSTALLED on your PC for this feature to work. Even if you have a doc file you downloaded, created in MS Word, it will NOT transfer if you do not have Word installed! Bit of a joke for all us OpenOffice users. DAMN! Dannik 43
Will it work with the free Microsoft Office Word and Excel viewer applications?
Rocky 1,224
Good idea. Trying. Didn't work. Surely PSP Media Manager doesn't actual use the MS apps to do the conversion to HTML process. That's the only reason I can think it needs them.
firefly2442 0
you actually have to have MS Word and Excel INSTALLED on your PSP for this feature to work Am I reading this correctly? How can you have Word and Excel on your PSP? You mean on your local computer right? How about convert the .doc to pdf (with OpenOffice) and then the pdf to html (with some other tool)? Dannik 43
Good ideas, Firefly, but I think Rocky's ire is that he paid for software that should do that for him. In fairness to Sony, the requirements do state that Word/Excel XP or later is required, but there is so much good freeware for the PSP that gets around that, why did it cost him good money? Oh, and Rocky, I'm trying to convince my neighbour, who's a huge underground PSP freak, to spend some time here, or at your PSP site (assuming you still have it running, I haven't checked recently). He's got some fantastic homebrew/freeware tools that may be to your liking.

Sorry that was a typo, I meant to say on your PC. This is akin to a game requiring $2000 3ds max installed on a PC just to play a $30 game! There probably is some multiple conversion route to achieveing the same thing (where PDF is involved, rarely free though), but the main reason I grudgingly bought the new version of Media Manager was to have a simple drag and drop solution. Very annoying.
magnumkp 0
Can't you open the file in OpenOffice and convert it from there?
Rocky 1,224
Can't you open the file in OpenOffice and convert it from there? That will be the easiest route probably, open xls or doc files in OpenOffice, and Save out As an html file, then drag that to the PSP folder.

Rocky 1,224
And now Sony Tech Support's considered reply to my support request stating that surely it is not required to have MS Office installed just to transfer a doc file. Response (Krishna R.) - 10/23/2006 03:00 PM Greetings Rocky, Thank you for contacting Sony Media Software Support. I suggest that you please install Microsoft Office. If the files not transferring then please get back to us and we will be glad to assist you. I hope this information is helpful. If you have follow up questions or need further assistance with this issue, please update this incident. Have a great day. Sincerely, Krishna R. Technical Support Sony Media Software Krishna R, Can I suggest you please make an attempt at a realistic suggestion? I really don't think I'll be spending £500+ just so I can move a doc file from my PC to my PSP. Sheesh!
Dannik 43
Perhaps you could let Krishna R. know that your retail box didn't include the aforementioned application, so if they would ship you the missing software, so you could use the application you purchased from them?
