ZJJ Posted October 17, 2006 Share Posted October 17, 2006 There are so many times I hear about how solid a Linux server is, but this issue keeps happening and I am beginning to wonder about it being less problems then a MS server. As I stated, we are running an Ubuntu server here at work. We have several users set up and several groups set up to restrict permissions to different areas of the network. It seems that whenever I make changes to the groups (add or remove users), it randomly drops other users from the same group. I end up having to double check the set ups to make sure everyone still has their permissions. I think this is quite ineffecient and will get to be a nightmare to handle as we grow larger. Anyone else heard of this happening and/or thoughts to prevent it from continuing to happen? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Can you give us an example? As for MS... active directory users and groups, right click add user, fill in the info and add member to group. done. ZJJ Posted December 25, 2006 Author Share Posted December 25, 2006 I use this route: System -> Administration -> Users and Groups Then add the user, set them to the appropriate group, edit permissions, and save. Our groups are in three levels: consultants, staff, managers A couple of examples. 1) deleted Bob (system admin) as he no longer needs access because he left the company. Everyone in the staff/manager groups lost access to their directories. Theory: Thought it happened because he had set up everything. 2) added Susie to the consultant's level. All other consultant's lost access to the directories. This shot the first theory out the window. Sometimes it's just a person in the group and not the entire group that loses access. If so read this... https://bugs.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+...ools/+bug/26338 It appears gnome has a bug in setting it your way. Not all installations are reporting it...
