Why No GR2 Mod?!?!?

Greetings peoples!

This is my first post on here but I have been playing all forms of Ghost Recon on both PC and Xbox for a long time.

The Big Question: Why hasn't anyone made up a GR mod based on GR2? It seems like all the material like models and weapons are already done and all that is needed is maps with missions or a campaign! :wall:

The Small Question: Why oh why did the Stargate mod die?

There is no GR2 to pc, just original TCGR and GRAW, do you refer to GRAW ? Stargate died like many other great mods, things happen, big mod projects take a lot of time, usually years, so its not difficult to happen things take make the modders give up, unfortunately.

Be welcome!

Perhaps he means a GR2 Mod for Ghost Recon Classic... If that's the case TheVipersFang I think it's because Ubisoft would not allow us to repurpose GR2 art assets in a Ghost Recon Classic mod.

I do think it's an interesting idea, Ghost Recon 2 does have scenarios that would play much better and more realistically on [Ghost Recon]... If Mod Developers were to leave out some of the fantasy content, and bring the maps to a larger scale it could be a really compelling project, with a very contemporary and relevant theme.

Recreating all those GR2 maps would be an enormous amount of work for someone, that would have to be a very motivated, talented and well supported... Most GR mods today seem to be one man efforts with occasional support and contributions from just a few others, not the hard pounding team efforts that created some of the massive total conversion and that a GR2 for GR TC would require...

Just my best guesses...

Hi "TheVipersFang" -- Welcome!

To add a bit to Waika's post, AFAIK (could be wrong  ) when Ubisoft decided to cancel GR2-PC it was not possible for them to make assets available (not even for e.g. a map pack) without much extra work (porting) because I think GR2-PC was being developed using a different engine from TCGR? In fact, I've heard it was basically the same engine that R6 "Lockdown" is built with? So as Waika says the effort to make everything for a GR2 mod from the ground up would be unbelievable. :(

Hi Janie42! Actually Ghost Recon, Ghost Recon 2, and R6 Lockdown are all on the same engine; more precisely different iterations of the same engine, rather like Doom I through Doom III, with Ghost Recon, obviously being the oldest, Ghost Recon 2 an intermediate step, and Lockdown being the newest and most state-of-the-art...

You are correct some art assets would not be directly portable from Ghost Recon to Ghost Recon 2; player models being one example as Ghost Recon 2 models appear to use normals. But Ghost Recon doesn't really need new player models, skins or even weapons from Ghost Recon 2 all it would need is maps and these were almost certainly done in 3D Studio Max just as Ghost Recon's maps were.

Exporting maps from the Xbox game disk to Max would be difficult, but certainly not impossible; someone would have to write an exporter, and that would probably not be worth the time as Ubi would probably stymie such an effort due to Licensure.

Making a Ghost Recon 2 mod for Ghost Recon from scratch is not that far fetched a notion though; Ghost Recon Mod Developers have certainly undertaken and completed much more ambitious projects. Not to trivialize the amount of work involved as it would be substantial, but all that's needed is a capable Level Designer, and Mission Scripter that wanted to undertake such a project.

Many of the art assets needed to flesh out such a project are already part and parcel of Ghost Recon, it's expansions, and existing mods, so a lot of work that Mod Developers used to have to do from scratch is ready and available.

It is a compelling mod idea, that I'm sure talented Developers that played the Xbox game (and liked it but found it wanting), could easily improve and make for something quite impressive irregardless of Ghost Recon's aging version of the RSE engine. Whether someone gets excited and motivated enough about the idea to actually undertake and complete something is another story... It's a fairly sure bet a lot of Ghost Recon Fans would be pretty excited about such a mod though!

:))

I've asked this before but some people can't seem to grasp the concept that I wasn't asking for a GR2 mod, perse, but rather a mod that makes the specialists look like the operators from that game. Kept spouting off about copyright and such. Which is ridiculous as I never said anything about using ubisoft assets. Not porting anything just basically a model/skin mod that has a realistic looking, modern SF A-Team, which I had yet to see up to that point IE: SPEAR, MICH helmets, etc. But now with CENTCOM (whenever it's released) it's kind of a moot point as it has exactly what I've been looking for. Except for the fact I was told they might not do a woodland version of their characters. :(

Why dont you put a screenshot of the model you would like to see in GR1 ? :shifty:

It'll take me a bit to find a good pic but if you've played GR2 or seen the real SF/SEAL's/FR operators in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 60 Minutes piece on Navy SEAL's in Ghanny is another good reference point. You should be able to get an idea of what I mean: SPEAR, custom (like Blackhawk, Eagle, and the like) rigs and webbing. MICH heltmets. RAID BDU's. Ya know, chars that look similar to Cpt Mitchell, Salvatore, Ramirez, Parker, Foster, etc etc.

Here's a group photo of the GR2 team:

http://www.dedigitalerevolutie.tv/filecont.../GR2-Ghosts.jpg

You can see them all individually on the official Ghost Recon 2 site under the characters section. http://www.ghostrecon.com/us/ghostrecon2/index.php

There's good RL pictures out there but I can't find them right now. I used to have some on my HD but they were lost in a reformat.

The CENTCOM mod is pretty much the type of characters I've been wanting to see for years. That's why I'm so excited about it. Too bad it's not out yet and there's no estimate on when it'll be done.

Why so much of a hot topic? Is there some kind of tension or ongoing disgruntlement over the GR2 issue?

Can anyone tell me how to fix the issue with the FN SCAR mod for GR Classic? Whenever I use the LAW in the demo kit the game goes CTD. Can it be fixed or is it another dive thing? :shifty:

I think I figured out some basics with modding too. For example, I know how to either remove all weapons or swap skins but I still don't know how to make my own weapon kits. Anyone got any pointers?

Game on :o=

Yes, I'd say there's still plenty of bad feelings over the GR2 for PC cancellation...yes, even from that long ago. Many folks around here, including myself, still feel betrayed by developers and publishers who haven't treated us like we wanted. Fool me once, shame on you...Fool me twice, shame on me.

Why no GR2 mod for GR? Why wasn't DYNACOMP finished? Why wasn't Starship Troopers finished? Why wasn't Stargate finished? The answer is simple. Too many people asking others to make them the mods that they want and not bothering to take the time to learn and contribute themselves. It may sound harsh but modders make the mods and when those modders move on someone else needs to fill their shoes or nothing gets done. It makes so much sense that I shouldn't even have had to say it.

I said I'm new to these forums, not to gaming. I know how the demand for mods work, you get every tom dick and harry saying they want this and that making constant demands and critisism but never once learning to mod or even to offer help but still expecting everything for nothing as fast as possible  Thats why I'm not demanding that anyone make a mod, I was just asking a question.

I hate some developers too, so many potentially great games either get cancelled or ruined for the dumbest reasons. GR2 for PC is one among many: SG-1 Alliance, Starship Troopers (new version) for Xbox (and other consoles), Black Hawk Down, GRAW, and so on... Lets not go off bashing things with negative stuff here ok?

Back on topic

Did anyone know that classic GR seems to have a limit on how many mods it can have at any one time? I don't mean active I mean in its mod folder. I think my version went on a CTD loop when I hit 50 mods

Can anyone recommend something new for me to try out? I'm looking for a new campaign for under 50mb?

No limits from the game itself, i think, itll depend on your pc configuration, i have 200+ mods in the folder, about 20 gbs, it runs just ok.

Well "new" can be a lot different depending on the time you dont try out things here, but GHOST TURBULANCE is a nice 8 missions campaign from 08/12/2006, you can get it here.

Don't know how I missed your excellent post/reply earlier, Waika!

Thanks for correcting a mistaken belief I'd held, though it's caused me to revisit a depression my incorrect belief had once lifted from me. :( Specifically I'd forgiven Ubi for not giving us at least a small map pack after GR2-PC was heartlessly cancelled, because I'd thought Ubi would've had to do all kinds of work to make that happen. Now I find this is untrue: maps should not have been difficult to make available!

Why no GR2 map pack only expansion then, I wonder (unhappily)?
