SP Maps to MP?

Recommended Posts

this is to the GRiN people here and anyone else whos cares. I noticed that the strongpoint map is basically the SP player version which has been relit but kept the same size and everything( others have probably noticed this to)

So my question is that will there be a patch which adds other single player levels or maps to be played on multiplayer. It would be really cool to play sige on the embassy level. Just wondering. :)

I've been trying to convert some of the SP levels over to [GR] Coop for a few weeks now, but keep running into new issues over and over. It may be a while, but I'm determined to make these maps available for [GR] Coop. One way, or another.

This is one of those topics that keeps poping up regularly here on the GR.net forum and GRIN has never responded to them... BUT I was pm:ed a reply, that I clearly interpret that there were no such plans, i.e. official release. In other word it is up to the community (perhaps with help from the devs)...

I think it is sad that the concept of making all maps available for all gamemodes (in the [GR] tradition) was abandoned. It is one of the top 5 reasons we see so few players online... :(

I agree Peace. It is indeed sad that some of these very flexible [GR] concepts, like all maps for all game modes, editor for all modes, firefight and recon for SP etc. were abandoned in Graw. It is this piece-meal approach that has diminished the popularity of Graw, even though this game has tremendous potential. It is options, replayability and flexibility that makes a game great. I fail to understand ....... :hmm:

What is there to understand????

PC games don't make any real money for the video game companies so they put little effort into them.

In the case of GRAW, I don't think it means that GRIN didn't care about the game. But they were probably told what to make by UBI... and it wasn't like [GR]. Doing that would have probably taken more resources than UBI was willing to spend.

And just why WOULD UBI spend a lot of money on a game where most people will buy one copy (if that!!!) and then play it for several years. Console gamers spend a LOT more money on games.

It's basic economics. And the fact that we all want the game to be something else is not going to alter the basic economic equation.

While most of your points are valid, you are making the assumption that PC games don't bring in much income. If that was the case, then PC gaming would be dead already, and we wouldn't have titles such as Oblivion, FEAR, Half-Life 2, Unreal Tournament, etc etc.

Edit: Oh, and the SP map conversions are coming along nicely. Norad on the line should be available fairly soon, and hopefully the rest of the maps by the end of the month.

In 2005 console games made over $10 billion

http://www.npd.com/dynamic/releases/press_060117.html

while PC games made less than $1 billion

http://www.npd.com/dynamic/releases/press_060117a.html

The article also states that PC game sales are on the decrease.

That doesn't mean I don't think they aren't worthy of some effort from the video game companies. But it is easy to see why they don't put a lot of effort into the games now.

But I am glad you are working on those maps!!

Thanks.

Thats because they're making fewer games. And the ones that are made are made like shi_. I'd be willing to pay twice as much for a game, IF it was made right. I would be offsetting the lost of me playing it for say 2-3 years. Then they have 2-3 years to make the next one. I'll pay, just like for anything else, if it's worth it!

Is that for MP HH too Nutlink? If so I owe you some.

Maybe eventually. I know that Norad on the line would be great for hamburger hill with that huge blown out building, but the rest of the map would go to waste for sure. Siege might be a better option, and TDM is a definate possibility. Either way, once I finish all the maps they'll be released in both a .7z format and .zip format with all the conversions. Otherwise you can piecemeal them together in the maps modding section over the next few weeks. :)

AJ59:

Every single time a new console or generation of consoles come out, people claim that PC gaming will die. While it's not nearly as big as console gaming, there is still money to be had, and despite the fact that PC gaming is taking a slight drop (as it always does when new consoles arrive), it'll be right back up to normal within a year or two. I think we're on the same page by looking at what you said, but we're reading different books (if that makes any sense either, lol).

I trully believe that if the the PC version had the budget and all the backing with advertising as the console games and the console game realest half baked, the figures above will be very different.

Well, all of my comments about why this game isn't what we want were pure speculation anyway.

Until someone at Grin or UBI tells us why (though we have heard many of the Grin folk say that they didn't really have as much time as they would have liked) then we won't really know.

IMHO it's because UBI doesn't care rather than because the are ignorant.

I downloaded this map and gave it a try.

It is very nice!! Those snipers are awesome!!

I'm afraid I can't remember exactly where it was, but there's a spot where there appears to be an invisible wall or something in the middle of a street because I was unable to shoot the bad guys. Shots that should have been head shots (using scoped Scar-L) didn't bother them... and there was no indication of an impact. Luckily they could not shoot me either. Unfortunately, all the shooting DID get the attention of some other guys that behind me and they got me.

Thank you very much for making this map. I think you did a great job.

Just ran thru the mission (LAN, easy, Recon), and other than a few missing or blue/yellow textures everything ran great. Didn't come across the "dead zone" that AJ59 reported. A couple of things you're probably working on that I noticed was the lack of banditos at the embassy other than the M1, and the Tac-Map. Game ended when objective was reached and no crashes!

Congrats on the first SP/[GR] Co-Op conversion, can't wait for the final!

At the end there should be 36 tangos (and a tank, but I don't think I made it active yet). Probably an error on scripting if not too many showed up. I also want to place a few more around there somewhere, but we'll see how the final version of this (and the other) SP maps turn out over the course of the month.

Yeah, you have no tank scripted yet.

And the 36 tangos aren't appearing either. Time to look over the script I guess. Ah well, all should be better in the next version due out sometime either tomorrow or Sunday.

Edit: Problem solved, good luck with the extraction zone ;) Now to work on the tank, since I don't know a damn thing about vehicle scripting this should be.....fun.....lol

Did you update the file that we download or should we just wait?

I've been playing it lone wolf and am not yet close to the end!

Boy it would be soooo awesome if someone made a fairly detailed tutorial titled "How to convert an SP map to [GR] COOP". I would love to work on such conversions, but don't know where to start. Except for unbundling, I haven't had any success.
