Could it be time to change the name of this Website?

Im just interested in peoples thoughts on this.

I like this Website a lot for a number of reasons including the professional and likeable admins, the intelligent members who post in these Forums, and the fact that all the players here came here because of the common link of playing a very realistic tactical shooter called Ghost Recon.

I think its fair to say, although there are the disagreers, that the Ghost Recon series for the moment is dead, which means that the game of the future for most of us will not be a Ghost Recon game. I like many are still playing GR at Alpha, and there are other full servers running playing [GR], but we are looking for the next realistic FPS, which will not be a Ghost Recon game.

In that respect, I thought maybe we ought to look at a new name for this site which still represents Realistic FPS to players and will still draw ppl here, not trun ppl away because the name is no longer relevant.

Oviously there are many Forums in here to cover other games, however, they might be considered the minor and somewhat little used Forums for those that are aware of and use them.

What will happen if a new game appears, technically I think that game will be ArmA but whatever it is, if its not a Ghost Recon game, the members may look elsewhere for info, game discussion etc.

Ill leave it there for the time being,

Your thoughts,

btw I only posted this in the GRAW Forum becuase it is still the most used Forum - no offense to GRIN,

Lighty out.

I'd be happy if the name stayed as it is, but had sections for other games down the side or something. Not just in the forum like it is now.

On a side issue, I see you have that "armed assault is the future" link

I got an email about OF2 today from amazon.co.uk

Dear Amazon.co.uk Customer,

We've noticed that customers who have purchased Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 3: Advanced Warfighter (PC) are also interested in [Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising] (PC). For this reason, you might like to know that [Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising] (PC) will be released soon. You can pre-order your copy for just £29.99 (25% off the RRP) by following the link below.

[Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising] (PC)

Codemasters

RRP: £39.99

Price: £29.99

You Save: £10.00 (25%)

Release Date: 22 December 2006

Platform: PC

Bearing those 2 games in mind (and future GR installments) if the site did change slightly, i'd like to see recommended tactical FPS games (not like BF2) on the main page, so that I can still play with like-minded players and not silly people.

no thats fine, but I had trouble finding it, which I think goes to the theart of the problem with the Website at the moment. Unlees you're playing GRAW then its easy to miss the other Forums.

Maybe a restructure is needed over a Name Change to keep [GR] but non-GRAW ppl here.

Deffinetly NO to a name change. There are some here that still and always will play [GR] along side GRAW. if you want a forum for other games like AA or COD3 or anyother fps game thats on its way go join there forums. :grin1:

yes ive been thinking about this too latley, maybe we should change the name of the site to www.whinersgalore.com to attract more people that can contribute!:)

hehe..oops opening a can of worms here.. just a friendly joke;)

ROTFLMAO :grin1: Just Too funny for words

This is a Ghost Recon fansite, no name change, focus change or structure change planned.

What you are suggesting is not a name change, it's a whole new site you are suggesting. You aren't suggesting changing the site name to ArmedAssault.net and keeping the content the same - you are talking about a whole new site. That being the case I suggest you go to the existing community for whichever game it is your are thinking of, as I have no plans to ctart a site for any other titles.

Thanks for the compliments though, appreciated.

That is a very good point m8 and one that should be pointed out to a few more ppl who insist on posting on theses forums when they clearly hate the game.

As for GR post's being lost, I have no problem in finding them, thats what a book mark if for and MY Assistant..

I knew some ppl would take offense to this post, it was a scenario I had anticipated but I thought the question ought to be asked.

Just so we're all clear here -

First of all, Im not writing the post bcoz I dont like GRAW. However, I think its important to take note that a lot of posters to these Forums are no longer posting here bcoz they dont like the game and are looking for something else instead. That being the case, it stands to reason that the next game that the majority of members here will play will not be a GR Series game.

Secondly, just bcoz I think ArmA will be a popular game duz not mean that I think you should change the name of the site to ArmA. A little maturity plz.

And Grin Willie, its easy to make a joke about renaming the site to Whiners.com, but the fact is if GRIN had produced the game that the majority of GR.Net members had wanted, there wouldnt have been any whiners.

The thing is at the end of the day, Ghost Recon was just the name given to a new and brilliant style of FPS that we had not seen before, and we may not see again. It is not the name though that sold us, it was the style of play - a true tactical FPS. If the name was everything that mattered then we would all love Ghost Recon: Advance Warfighter, but we don't, so therefore it is more then a name that draws us to this site.

It is a 'style of play', and a 'type' of FPS that draws us here. All I wanted ppl to consider was that maybe, in terms of the future of the Site, it might be worth looking at a name that would carry the Site into the future, not leave it hanging onto the past. Dont get me wrong, I still play [GR] whenever I get the opportunity, I still love it as much now as I did 5 years ago - but the future, at this stage, is not Ghost Recon - but it is a realistic FPS.

'nuff said, think about it.

Luv me, hate me...its a question worth asking.

Lighty.

I don't understand the question, give me an example of the sort of name you are thinking of.

OK, off the top of my head.

We love the Recon Aspect, the Tactical, the Stealth, the Realism, the fact that its a MilSim.

Alpha Squad came up with a nice motto that fit well into what they were aiming for which was an even more realistic version of Ghost Recon "The way its meant to be played..."

See that line means so much to ppl who take their MilSims seriously. It lets everyone know that what we like about realistic FPS's is what seperates us from the BF2's and the COD FPSs.

Thats what I like about GR.Net - its cos I know that everyone here is thinking the same thing about their FPSs.

And thats why I think just calling this place GR.Net is selling this Site short of what it really is.

Its a site for diehard realistic MilSim gamers.

This make sense to anyone?

yes its very easy to make a joke about it, thats why I did it, and it was just meant as a lighthearted joke :) however, nomatter how GRAW would have been, there would always be whiners, maybe you wouldnt complain about it but someone else would!:) whining is and will always be a part of gaming, because you cant please everone!

the reason for not re-naming the site is quite simply what rocky said, its a ghost recon site, specialising in ghost recon in _all_ its shapes and forms! im sure there are plenty of other sites out there that does the "general tac sim gaming" thing very well already! so why turn this site into something its not? everything has its place!:)

and just because its called ghostrecon.net doesnt mean it cant be a host for people who like diffrent games in the same genre! a name means so little really, take the #unrealed irc channel for example, that started out as a somewhat semi-offical Unrealed support channel and still excists today, 10 years after anyone has said a WORD about unreled in there ;)

Well for me personel and i guess most of the team it is the game that drew us here. we are fans of the Ghost Recon series of games. I have not played anyother FPS games apart from R6 ( and im a member of the AGR-S forum if i want to post coments and look for info on that game).

I think Rocky will keep the forum as it is as long as there are still ppl playing GR or GRAW or anything else that comes along in the Ghost Recon series. and thats the point we are making.

We are FANS and this is a FAN site so there for does not need a name change.

Ill press on.

Picture this: really struggling for a catchy title but you'll get the idea. As it is you have extremely innovative concepts coming from members at the GDC Comps, Im sure they can come up with a better name then I, however for the moment:

TACTICALGAMING.NET

Spawned from the Ghost Recon Series

btw, I know Tactical Gameing has been done, its just a quick throw up to illustrate a concept.

And while Im at it, Rocky and other Admins have done a brilliant job with this Site, thats why Im in here everyday to check out what they have for us. I want it to continue in that vein and draw other fans to this Site bcoz it is so well done and should continue to represent the values of those who like realistic FPS like [GR]. I feel that the name drew all of us here years ago when Ghost Recon was GOTY, and drew thousands of members, now a lot of those members have moved on and it would be great for this to be a Site for all players who love realistic tactical Sims now and into the future, not just Ghost Recon.

Ive said enough, too much I think,

Peace,

Ever faithful and dedicated GR.Net member,

Lighty.

Im sorry i still fail to see why it needs to change. We all know how good the game is and we all play it, and we come here to read about the latest news/mods and so on.

As Rocky, Grin Wille and myself have pointed out this is a site for ppl who like to play the GHOST RECON SERIES of games and there are plenty of other MILSIM sites you could join if thats the sort of thing your looking for.

Yes I see where you are coming from now. I actually own a Tactical Gaming domain already, and if I took the inclination to follow that up, I would do pretty much exactly what you have described. That's why I bought the domain years ago - the reason that it has sat idle though is that GR.net is my primary focus and I have nil, nadda, no free time anymore for another website. I'd love to have a website covering that but it is not possible, and even if I did, it would be in addition to GR.net, not instead of or combined with.

For tactical gaming in general there are already other sites doing a grand job (@war and tactical gamer for 2 off the top of my head).

I take your point about the forum regulars here who would probably be all over such a site if we set it up, but I am sorry to say it will never happen, unless I win the lottery and can pack in my day job.

I can only focus on one site primarily, I'll put 110% into one site and one game rather than 33% into 3. That's why I already shut down one of my other gaming sites not too long ago, and have taken reliable staff at another to handle things there.

So in summary, I am afraid you will have to go elsewhere for your General Tact. Gaming fix, we are staying 100% focussed on Ghost Recon, always have always will. I'm sure that the maj. of our readership would want it this way, and I hope the above explains my reasonings behind it.

Again, I thank you for the compliment though.

no, its ok Im happy here.

I see where you're coming from, and I hope you dont consider my raising the question as me not being happy with this Site.

Its becoz I like it so much that I thought the name change might pull an even bigger crowd.

However, the question has been answered and Im happy with that.
