Ruin 17
I finally convinced my parents to allow me $200 for my video card. I was originally looking at a Ti4200 ($90 at BestBuy) but then I thought about the 4800SE. However, I never hear anyone speak about it. Which of the two should I go with? They're about the same price.
snakebite1967 0
the 4800 is only a 4200 i know they changed the memory and its 8xagp and some versions are on a 4600 pcb but other than that its basicly a faster 4200

Dark Ranger 0
Radeon 9500PRO...hands down. Only thing is, the 9500 requires a connection to your PSU instead of running power from the PCI bus. Might want to check to see if you have a spare connecter first(4-PIN, like the floppy power cable).
Ruin 17
I like the link NurFACE. 9500Pro so far IMO.
Stinger 0
Ruin, which computer are you getting again? Cause whichever one of those you get, it will need a new PSU if you hook it up to a prefab.
Ruin 17
I'm building Stinger. I have a 350W Power Supply... I assume this will work? I saw some debate and saw that a 350W was adequate.
Dark Ranger 0
Ruin, a 350Watt will work fine. ATI recommends a 300Watt PSU or higher for this card. The external power connecter is also better for the motherboard.
Stinger 0
What...your building??? I thought your parents nixed that idea.
Ruin 17
They changed their mind's after finding out that a premade one wont beable to do what I need...
NYR_32 6
Ruin, I just "finished" my first build and let me tell you it was fairly easy, but be warned make sure you check everyone twice before you power the sytem up, I overlooked something and it may be the cause of a major problem I have encountered. Good luck with the build, and I would stay away from the 4800, just because its only a supped up 4200, and I would go with the Ati 9500 Edited April 6, 2003 by NYR_32
Stinger 0
Oh I was lookin @ some becnches and the 4800 constantly was losing to the 4600. Thats about as funny as the XP3000+ losing in benches to the 2800+
RooK 0
I voted Ati cause I love their cards/drivers. I own 3 of them and have never had a problem. Stinger, it may have lost in some areas, but it excelled in others due to the 512kb l2 cache.

Might want to check to see if you have a spare connecter first(4-PIN, like the floppy power cable). Not required - it comes with a splitter to use the HD power connector. [The Connect3d Radeon 9500 does anyway]

JTF-2 0
i'd go for the ATI, no reason other than i really like them and they're Canadian... (damn, there's that inferiority complex again )
snakebite1967 0
@ stinger of course the 4800 loses against a 4600 after all its only a revamped 4200, both nvidia and ATI confuse customers with names and numbers take the radeon 9000 its slower than a 8500 , it seems to be a way of charging more money for less card . ive spent a few days now at local stores trying to find a 4400 or 4600 and they keep pushing the 4800 on me its double the price of the 4200 just because its 8xagp with some faster memory, they realy seem to think we will fall for it

The 9000 comes in PCI form for us stuck with it too And it if was revamped, you would think the revamping would make it better lol Edited April 8, 2003 by Stinger

Stinger 0
I for a long time was/have been wanting the MSI Max on the SiS648 Chipset, it has everything basically, and its a great OC'er. Not to mention its only $84 shipped @newegg.com. But recently I've really been wondering if I am just gonna be prolonging the inevitable by extending my computer. My current gfx card has trouble with only 1 out of the 20 games I have and play. And the rest it runs smooth on. So I think maybe I will wait a year, then my pc can become my new server/development/learning computer and the 64bit wars will show who is really the best CPU. Depending on the winner of that I will prolly just buy a new box. And my damn payments for the CMPQ will be over in October??? so I can start spending my money on a full fledged rig and not a hybrid. So I figure once I have $1500+ I will buy my new puter, and that is a very very very long ways away. And there is a minute chance that my parents may let me work at a better place (less money but a load more hours) so I can pay this off and I want more money lol
