Slicing the pie

Recommended Posts

I understand the theory of "slicing the pie," inching around the corner with my site on the line of the corner until the target becomes visible. Unfortunalty in Ghost Recon this police/SWAT tactic has not worked for me. I frequently get shot before my target becomes visible. I have not found a way to regularly beat the AI at corners. Mission 1 GR Caves, Mission 2 rescuing that upstairs pilot I have problems. Seems like the AI fires at me through the wall killing me before I see the Tango. I fire at elbows legs anything I see but I still frequently get hit before I acquire a target. What am I doing wrong?

What's happening is the enemy has been alerted to your position. You can try a number of tactics.

Try being more stealthy, or one I quite like is to get a team member at another angle to fire off some rounds and attract the tango's attention, that works well in coop games.

Im real life what you do is, the lower you are when you peek around the corner, the less you silohette will catch their eye.So a person can be facing the corner, but not really paying attention and you lay down and peek around the corner they wont see you, if you stand they may see you more and kill you.

On the GR all that goes right out the window, try holding Alt and side stepping or side stepping croutching. what I sometimes do, is throw a frag away from my postion and the enemy runs towards it or away from me. this lets me catch them off guard. Some times I know they are right around the corner and :o= I bum rush the suckers :o= and50-50 I kill 'em :o= , online its more like 80-20 for me :o= . But now that people know thats what I do, its gonna be less.

Some good tactics thanks!

I should say that I generally crawl toward the corner using the alt key to try to remain stealthy. I try not to get any closer to the corner than I have to and I go sideways until I hit a wall etc.

The two hardest Missions in this regard for me are Capturing that Russian in Mission one and the Pilot in the upper room in Mission two. It is hard to rush, use auto fire or grenades in these situations as there is a hostage in the vicinity. I do generally take out the sniper in the adjoining room to the pilot hostage by tossing a grenade in the room. It seems to me that the AI sometimes misses the grenade effect though. I have tossed several grenades right past the wall next to the tango hiding on the first floor without him dying. Sometimes it even looks like the nutty tango is chasing the grenade, mayde I'm throwing duds!

It seems to help a little to start firing at the corner to back the tango off it some. However, pausing during this tactic, like to reload, may result in death. It may be that the second guy in my squad is the one that is alerting the tango, maybe he is not being stealthy as I can't be both guys at once. I know the second squad member frequently tries to crawl over me when I am trying to be stealthy. Maybe I should put the squad on hold and then advance the one guy, but I don't think the second guy stays put if I do that either. I have been tempted to shove a grenade up the south end of my north bound support man on several occasions.

In these two scenarios there is limited space to conduct a diversion in but I will try to dream something up. I just hate seeing my screen go red before I even see any part of the tango. I guess that in a real situation the tango might all of a sudden pop around the corner & fire but in this case I frequently do not see anything before I end up dead. Maybe the AI gets tired of stealth after a while and just kills me :wall:

I guess in real life the hidding tango does have an advantage. They are able to hide at an advantagous angle to the corner and may have a shorter time to aquire their target, but then the attacker has the timing element more on his side.

I usually use some " SHOCK & AWE " tactics like:

FRAG THE DANM PLACE UNTILL THERE'S NO ONE LEFT !!!!

M-203s, MM-1s, Mortars or OICWs do the job perfectly, but if u like stealthy procedures better, try snipe the guys in the windows. U should kill as many tangos as you can from outside before going inside, but be careful to not kill the hostage.

But if you are a CQB type of soldier......... load your MP5, set it to 3rounds or FA and go for it.

what I sometimes do, is throw a frag away from my postion and the enemy runs towards it or away from me.

This is a nice one. I call it " Grenade Bait" Works everytime.

Heres something I love doing online, I pick frags and throw one ahead of my team mate that is running towards a alley or around a corner. They see it stop (or run away) and it blows up and they go forward. Kinda like a improptu breach, frag, clear technique used by SWAT teams. only they dont know about it ahead of time. If they get killed, its not my problem, Im not the one who wasnt paying attention.

Another fun thing only, bouncing frags off the window sills, so that they go right infront of a approaching enemy.

On night docks, by the office that has all the doors, the bottom window facing the tower is not breakable when you throw a frag, top is.Also that wall grenades go right through it, so if you toss one in or out the window RUN!

*:o= OK heres a secret I am going to spoil.

Pick a gun with frags, fire on full auto, while holding down fire quickly pick frags, the gun will keep making the firing sound but it wont waste any of the bullets. Then throw a frag at a suspected enemy location and quickly switch back to your gun. What this does is lets the enemy know where you are and while they are waiting for you to run out of ammo they will wait near your corner, then you frag em. :o= *

OK this isnt a secret but more of a glitch, it doesnt give you any advantage, it can crash your game, and even crash your pc. I discovered this while messing around on the training map. I've done it online twice and it is not worth it, it drives everyone mad and everyone thinks you have support so they say your gonna cause lag or crash the server and if you get booted, you deserved it  . The reason I am saying how to do this, is becasue its a great way to get the AI's attetion while play SP, and it doesnt waste your ammo.

I know theres a way to do the same thing with the mounted machine guns and grenade launchers, but I cant remember how I did it.

*if this is not ok to post I will erase it, or re word if neccessary*

* I dont condone anyone doing this online*

*I am not aware if this is a cheat or not*

*you are responsible for your own actions, as I am for mine*

I dont know if anybody notices but this but typically the enemy AIs will turn towards an explosion (frag or GL) when one goes off in the distance. This is one way to get the tango to look in one direction and attack him from another.

IE. mission 2 the tango guarding the pilot in the house. You could set off a frag outside the house to the north or maybe just shoot at the upper part of the outer wall. The tango will usually turn towards the direction of the explosion or ricochets. You have to make your move quickly though, cause if you wait too long the tango may come out to investigate.

EDIT: But when all else fails I just do the direct approach, I stand straight up and just strafe around the corner, sometimes I wont even bother to peek. You have to realize that on certain places on the map it is possible for the tango to see you arm or a small portion of your head, but yet in your own view you will not see the tango yet.

I do, any who has played online with me knows, no one pays attention to what I say anyways. I tell someone, ''MAP-look behind you (fill in name) '' they just keep walking and get killed by them. I am by myself in a area, and everyone is sitting around the base not even branching out, I have 4 people show up next to me, I call for help, no one even budges to move or help. So I usually give a little ''frag, heads down'' right after I throw it above them and they usually drop real quick. I really only tked 2 people out of at least 30 times of doing this. 1 of the people that got killed was laying down and jumped up right when I tossed the frag, and the other one decieded to turn around and run by me, the frag hit his face and the S*** hit the walls.

Heres something fun to do on Elite, quietly sneak up to the bunker that is by the insert zone on Iron Dragon mission, place a claymore near the top of the bunker/MG nest. go up to the top of the cliff over looking the bunker/MG nest. Dont forget to get the guy at the top of the cliff the one in the MG nest. lay down overlooking the first bunker, detonate the claymore, pick your gun, turn right and zoom.wait a few seconds and you will see a huge group of enemies run towards the fragged bunker. one advances and calls the other two forward.they all scan and repeat. Its really fun to watch.

Yea Slink it is irritating that we have to choose between peeking and sliding when what we need is a sliding peek. I would add another thing to that list of wanna/ shouldas too- Moving forward vs moving sideways, now whats that about? Don't we need to move in more than four directions? I have found that using the Nostromo 50 directional pad alows me to move in other directions even at a run, even though I only have it programed for the 4 GR directions.

Frags would kill the hostages in the two cases I mentioned. I have killed a few hostages and members of my own party trying to use them as diversions.

While rescuing the pilot I set a sniper at one window and a rifleman at the other. I fired at both windows as a diversion and then tried moving around the corner with my third party. After 4-5 tries I could not tell that it was helping so I gave it up.

I've always found it useful to, instead of strafing around a corner, to lay down and lean around it. You lean much further laying down and if you have the sharp eye and reflexes you can make short work of enemies around corners. :)
