Linux Resources

Recommended Posts

As I mentioned in another thread, our company uses a Linux server and more specifically, Ubuntu OS. As I don't always want to rely on our computer tech guy for simple things like adding people and setting up permissions, I want to see about finding a good resource book.

Any suggestions?

This afternoon I inadvertantly took down 120 web sites as I typed a command incorrectly, so I would also like to know... (only for 5 minutes though, someone managed to realise my mistake pretty quick).

AFAIK most Linux resources are online as it moves at a pretty quick pace. Best bet is the find the support area / wiki for whatever program you are using on Ubuntu (Samba?) and trawl through that. That's not to say there aren't books, as I've seen them but none have really caught my eye. A lot of command prompt commands are common across all linux distrubutions, so they are worth reading up on. That does mean staring at a DOS like prompt for hours on end though.

One the upside, if you have a spare PC installing Ubuntu is easy so you can practice at home.

Basically, practice makes perfect. I started out in Linux with no idea what I was doing. Now, I can manage my way around and figure stuff out for the most part... I still feel like a newbie on the IRC channels though. Speaking of that, the Ubuntu IRC channel is very good for questions and so on. If you need any help, send me a PM. :)

edit: Also, there's tons of great Wiki's out there. Google is your friend. ;)
