Papa6 Posted July 16, 2006 Share Posted July 16, 2006 I downloaded the DVD AMD64 .iso and burned the image to a blank DVD. I installed it and man does this OS rock(I'm typing this from the firefox browser) my cooling fans haven't had to turn on at all. my windows partition has the fan on often due to heating. anyone else use linux here? I'm running a Web/FTP server, TeamSpeak server and several other types of servers on it, and it runs flawlessly. I reboot it about once a month. Papa6 Posted July 16, 2006 Author Share Posted July 16, 2006 Yeah I'm thinking about terminating my windows partition after I have a grasp on ubuntu. My kodak camera doesn't have any linux based drivers bu tit recognized my digicam no probs. Most of the problem is that it doesn't have a full Windows registery to work from nor all of the Windows DLL's. I can get MS Office to work on WINE, along with several other apps that don't have to access the direct draw and 3d acceleration of the video card. thelastrecon Posted July 17, 2006 Share Posted July 17, 2006 i have two partitions on my hard drive. one mepis linux and the other is windows. i have had linux on my computer as the main os for a couple years now (started with suse 9 and knoppix switched to ds linux, ubuntu, then mepis.) the only reason i have a windows partition at all is so i can keep up to date on files that family members or friends might use so i can help them when they have a problem. Papa6 Posted July 20, 2006 Author Share Posted July 20, 2006 as I write this, I'm dl'ing SUSE linux 10.1 i386(32bit) version. almost all 64bit OS's have issues with drivers, I'm writing this from my 64bit ubuntu linux partition and will install my new suse linux 10.1 i386. I have debian linux, fedora core 5, fedora core 6 beta, solaris. I'm firmly fixed in my desire to run linux. I'm looking into the gaming side, a small but loyal group who are also developing an application for running windows apps "Crossover" where soon one can play windows Directx games as well. Whether the OS is free or not is besides the point. Why would something the open source crowd supposedly abhors all of a sudden embrace it? It was a setup I had never heard about before and when I was interviewing several IT companies about what setup they would recommend for us and costs involved, only one of them even mentioned this setup. Obviously, we went with this company and now have that setup, but now I need to learn about it as I am the "first responder" for IT issues here. So far, the only issues I've had are struggling to get multimedia to work properly, some apps work well with it and others don't. Proprietary codecs suck... We also supply office servers (for centralised files) using gentoo with Samba. I still can't get the hang of having to type every command in though and what they all do. ToW-Angel Posted July 23, 2006 Share Posted July 23, 2006 I'm running RH9 on my backup box under my desk, which hosts TS w/MySQL connection, GLLC TS Query, plus the GR:AW AM website. I recently tried to setup Apache w/PHP and MySQL on Windows... While there is good support for it, it's one serious ###### to even attempt. I have yet to get it working 100%... I can get Apache & MySQL to work, but PHP won't, no matter what I try. I'm so hoping for GR:AW SADS to work on my Linux box... Would make things a lot easier for me in the end. I remember trying to setup the same thing as you on windows and it's very very difficult. In Linux, it basically takes about three commands and 20 seconds to install....
