the.ronin
i keep catching phrases in the news referring to the special ops "formerly known as delta force" ... so what are they called now??
Piccolo
I'm assuming, as I have not seen the same remarks, that these people are actually saying "Formally known as Delta Force", which would make somewhat more sense. However, that would still be incorrect in that Formal means to be something long withstanding/regular, and "Delta Force" is the unofficial title of the unit; the official being 1st SFOD-D (1st Operational Detachment-Delta). sea
So the way it was stated, it should be : " Unformally known as Delta Force"
the.ronin
great point piccolo ... but i heard it on two news channels (foxnews and msnbc (cnn is way too left for my taste )) and i could swear they said *formerly*.
Piccolo
Well if they have had a name change, I'm pretty sure no news network were to hear of it for awhile. I for one don't think they should even say 'Delta'. Commando is much more suiting; not everyone needs to know about this unit, it has gotten far to much exposure as it is. Major Maximum
yeah, piccolo, I know. Ever since BHD came out it seems everyone and their sister thinks they're a military expert, when not even many people in the military themselves know barely anything about the group. My cousin is in the Rangers, though, and he said he has been on a few tours with them and he said they are "A great group".
Noraf
just a little bit ot : i'd recomend Tom Clancy's Shadow warriors for those of you that wants to know a bit more about the us socom's history
budgie
I think they said 'formerly known as..' because until the unit became well known (especially before the book BHD), they were just this semi fictional 'Delta Force'. Now they are fairly well known and acknowledged, they are referred to in the press by their proper title or more often just as 'Special Forces' since that's their branch of the Army. Piccolo
Now they are fairly well known and acknowledged, they are referred to in the press by their proper title or more often just as 'Special Forces' since that's their branch of the Army. No. US Army Special Forces are the "Green Berets". Since Berets have the title' Special Forces" in their name, every other group falls under SOF (Special Operations Forces), or in the Marines case SOC (Special operations capable), because they are not officialy a part of SOCOM yet. 'Delta Force', is not their "Proper" title either. Delta is their unformal title, but as stated above the full name is 1st SFOD-D.
budgie
By proper title I meant SOFD-D. They are stilla branch of the US Special Forces, although not actually Green Berets. I believe they are more often just called "Delta" these days.
Piccolo
Actually, they are a part of SOCOM (Special Operations Command), and JSOC (Join Special Operations Command), and ASOC (Army Special Operations Command). The SF title is retained officialy for only the Green Berets though, as I said, all others are labeled SOF/SOC.
DeltaDude
Pic can you give any insight into this? I recently came upon a news article speaking of the first SFOD-D death in Iraq, and it appears he was (Stated he was) attached to HHC/Army Special Operations Command. On further research, it seems like a good number of the SFOD-D deaths from 'stan and up say they were attached to the HHC of ASOC. Is that just a cover, or is SFOD-D truely part of HHC (Headquarters Company) ASOC? Here's the link to the article: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,82432,00.html This article also states that it's a sort of cover for SFOD-D/CAG guys: http://www.fayettevillenc.com/updates.php Rest in peace, all of them. Piccolo
Yeah, I'm not one hundred percent sure on this point myself. From all accounts I have read, all Delta KIA are officialy listed as being under ASOC/ARSOC (Spelling of your choosing). SFOD are under ARSOC command, but since they are not officialy recognized, it makes sense. I've heard stories of the various covers Delta uses, back in the day they use to put the unit and operators down as technitians and such, for Army official records. Apparently many Dboys will play them selfs off to be Comp Techs at local bars too.. lol, nothing like a 6'0" 230 pound man with the build of a pro body builder to blow that cover.. DeltaDude
Yeah I remember reading something about that technician bit in BHD, apperently one of the operators pitched to some woman who was the daughter of the current commander of Delta, lol.
