Rocky 1,224
Well, I've been trying Firefox out for 6 months now, so it's time to finally give Opera a try. Looks good so far, after 6 months I'll be in a good position to make by final choice - or try whichever beta of the new IE is out by then

CR6 0
The beta for IE 7 is out now from what I understand. I've used a couple verisons of the IE7 beta (with the Win Vista beta) and I guess I can say that I'm pretty ... underwhelmed Firefox 2.0 will be coming out soon. Here's an interview with Firefox's creator and his comments on IE7: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/276...software03.html I've used it a little bit. The truth is that it actually looks pretty good. People don't expect me to say that; they expect me to say that it's terrible. They did exactly what we were expecting them to do, which was take a bunch of time and get IE7 up to feature parity with Firefox. I haven't seen any real innovation above and beyond what we delivered in Firefox. I think that it's a solid product, but I think that by the time it comes out, we're going to be another world ahead of them again, so I think it's kind of a step or two behind us. Dannik 43
When I first got a clue and realized IE was so horrible an app, I switched to Opera. This was when Firefox was in pre-release status. Opera, at that time, had some issues with certain web stuff I needed to use, mostly web banking. Firefox hit 1.0, so I switched... but I had to install so many extensions to get it to feel right. Funny enough, those extensions were more or less clones of existing Opera functions (and Opera is a smaller application, go figure). Now that Opera is much more mature, I consider daily that I should switch back to it, permanently. Sort of why I still use XP over Linux, I guess; A thin sense of 'what I think I need' over the sense of 'what I DO need'. Opera is a fantastic browser, and since they switched to the free model, doubly so. It's not perfect by any stretch, but when understood, Firefox is the retarded stepchild. Not saying Firefox isn't good, just that it's not at the same level as Opera.
thelastrecon 0
i use opera for everything. the few sites that still give me trouble i just open up firefox for (yahoo avatars for example). my favorite thing in opera is the speed in both my windows and linux partitions. CrowmanUK 0
Heres something that will swing it for opera mate, highlight some text in opera on a web page and right click it, then look at all the options, search, dictionary, translate. The IE7 beta is nice but it still falls behind opera in terms of useability for me. Go into tools/appearances and click on the toolbars tab, put a tick in the personal toolbar, now right click on all the crap in there and get rid of it from the personal toolbar, now drag your favourite pages up there and all your "quick" bookmarks are staring straight at you without going through menus. Mmmmm sweet Edited July 4, 2006 by CrowmanUK
element11 0
I love Opera. I was in the same Firefox boat as you Rocky, I used Firefox for about 6 months, and you guys over here got me to switch to Opera. I love it. Love the tab browsing, Love the mouse gestures, and love the toolbars.
Foxtrot360 0
Opera is better than FF and IE, IMHO. I'll never go back. The only thing i dont like about Opera is i cant find the skin i want for it. (But that goes for every app. out there)
WhiteKnight77 1
I have finally decided to try Opera. So far I like what I see. Need more testing to see if I really like it.
Rocky 1,224
Well guess what, I am still using FF. I never got around to trying Opera - I just HATE learning curves. BUT I have installed Opera, did it last night - why? Firefox is KILLING me with a persistant copy/past bug that is driving me INSANE!!!
WhiteKnight77 1
There isn't much of a learning curve that I see. Everything is pretty intuitive. One thing I do like, is the ability to accept or refuse cookies if you choose to go that route. It keeps you from getting those tracking cookies that ads use.

Yes, in my first 15 minutes with Opera, I did use the very cool cookie system to remove a specific site cookie so I could clear a broken login. Very easily done. Cpl Ledanek 247
I tried Opera last night and I thought my website are loading pretty quick. I even tried opening 4 homepages simultaneously (GR.NET, AGR-S.COM, BFS forum, Blackhole Motorsport) and it loaded pretty quick. I thought there was a bug coz it made my pages "go back" then I realized it has mouse gestures. COOL! I can burn lesser calories, so I got more fat tissue for winter----wait that's for bears only. The only FF-dependent plug-in I'm missing at Opera is the Download All plug-in. I tried looking in Opera's website, but I can only find the the Video-downloader. (My Google-Fu is weak accdg to some1 ) Download All is the bomb when your downloading all those por---I mean screenshots I'll play with it more and maybe later try the voice browsing capability it suppose to have. I'll be pimpin' bigger and wider love-handle soon---hoolla!

Dannik 43
K-Meleon is based on the Mozilla framework; is it compatible with Firefox plugins and extensions? I've currently got IE7, Opera9, Firefox2 and Safari3beta installed. I have all of them because I do some lightweight (very lightweight) web development from time to time, and like having as many fairly mainstream browsers installed as I can, for testing purposes. That being said, Opera is my second fave, after Firefox. Initially, Opera was a better choice for me than Firefox, but since extensions took care of almost all of the differences between Firefox and Opera, and with Firefox more commercially established, in the sense of web developers coding for it (banking sites, etc.) I've locked in for the time being. Still, Opera is a fantastic an option for those looking for a quick, lightweight suite of tools; their web browser is very fast, and their email client is pretty darn good. Plus, since it's free, why not?
Foxtrot360 0
I am still on Opera since my last post in this thread, what a cool web browser. I can complain that some sites dont run so well on it though, and sometimes have display errors.
