Tell PC Gamer (US) Why GR Is A Classic Game

PC Gamer (US) August 2006

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

What classic game [at least 5 years old] keeps you coming back for more? What is it about that game that makes you toss aside the latest and greatest technological gaming marvel?

Look!.....they've never mentioned GRAW, and they gave GR the Game Of The Year for 2001, so the way I see it kids, is the more responses to this they get, they'll at least print one of them next month. Tell them why the original is still a great game, more than five years later, and then post a copy of your email in here.

Give 'em hell........ letters@pcgamer.com

Here's mine sent today;

It's obvious people....PCG's one and only GOTY of 2001......GHOST RECON.

The game that launched the TacSim genre, an FPS game ahead of its time by the sheer

fact of its long term replayablity, both SP and MP. The game's developers didn't

let the fans down either, because within twelve months they brought us two expansions,

GR: Desert Siege and GR: Island Thunder, set in Ethiopia and Cuba respectively,

in the not too distant future.

What's interesting is that despite the release of its successor a few months ago,

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, GR is still being modded by a very talented and

enthusiastic bunch of people. Check out the 'Frostbite' mod and you'll see what

I mean.

In classic single player, the ability to move in and out of your team of six is

something that is sorely lacking in the console versions [including next-gen].

Great maps, great storyline and now a great price, I've had many happy hours playing

this game and have made many friends through the Ghost Recon community. Check out

www.ghostrecon.net and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Do we put Question of the Month in the email subject?

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

What classic game [at least 5 years old] keeps you coming back for more? What is it about that game that makes you toss aside the latest and greatest technological gaming marvel?

Surely it has to be GHOST RECON!

Thousands of Ghost Recon fans stayed true to this classic game even though they were denied a GR2 sequel on the PC. There has been no new official content since Island Thunder was released 4 years ago - and yet thousands of Ghost Recon fans remained active in the community, supporting the game, hosting coop and adversarial tournaments, and creating a remarkable abundance of fan made mods. Some of those mods reached such levels of excellence and enormity that they became known as unofficial expansion packs, such as Frostbite, Year of the Monkey and War of Infamy.

Since Ghost Recon's 5 year birthday last year there have been well over 300,000 mods downloaded, that's almost 30,000 mods downloaded every month in the last year alone - not bad for a 6 year old game!

The gameplay, the community and the mods are three reasons that almost 6 years after the original release Ghost Recon keeps fans coming back for more. That and the fact that today's home computers can run the game with all options on high, and on a widescreen monitor it still looks absolutely superb!

Ghost Recon without a doubt.

No other game has lasted the test of time like Ghost Recon, and 5 years down the line it’s still there taking pride of place on my Hard Drive.

Other games come and go, spend a week or so installed until the eye candy and wow factor wears off then they are consigned to my ever growing ‘Game drawer’ never to see the light of day again. Yet Ghost Recon get’s played at every opportunity, the community, the Mod content, the atmosphere in game just make it something special.

Heck, What classic game keeps me coming back? I never left.

"What classic game [at least 5 years old] keeps you coming back for more? What is it about that game that makes you toss aside the latest and greatest technological gaming marvel?"

I pick Ghost Recon (2001) by Ubisoft and Red Storm Entertainment. The fact that new mods are being made still, after 5 years, stuns me. Theres just something about the game, and I cant really put my finger on it. I have never played any other game more than I have played Ghost Recon. I myself, are still and active modder, and the Ghost Recon 1 forum on ghostrecon.net is still thriving, with tons of new posts every day.

Thanks for the heads up DS!! Did you PM everyone??

Here you go:

Hi,

Thanks for a good initiative.

GHOST RECON gets my vote.

A great tactical shooter with with a huge community where gamers and modders (!) unite in ever challenging games, even this day today.

The last open tournament took place in 2005 and new ones are being discussed.

I've played this game with people who are now my friends from US, Australia, Denmark and the Netherlands for the past 5 years and except for holidays, sickness or business, our team still meets up every Sunday for a couple of hours of fun.

The simplicity of the controls, the different approaches to a mission and loads of free, highclass, mods make this game a classic.

The Community remained active despite a disappointing "no go" for GR2.

The social aspect through the community and weekly gaming is an added value.

Mention one game that matches all this and I'll tell you that you're wrong.

I uninstalled my GRAW install lastnight, reinstalled ghost recon and the 3dsmax plugins

I have to admit that the first Ghost Recon wins hands down. I own both sequels and uninstalled GRAW lastnight because GRAW doesn’t give me what I was hoping or looking for.

Ghost recon on the other hand, is a tactical shooter which we were all hoping would carry over to GRAW. While I applaud GRIN on their attempt, the recent patches to fix issues, I SEE GRAW as flailing to live.

Ghost Recon has seen an upsurge in people returning to play an otherwise old game but it has what people were looking for.

Ghost Recon wins hands down

When a developer releases a patch with anti cheat measures, then come to find out those measures cause issues of people getting kicked from the server for no reason, this is an unexcusable error in development.

short to the point. the way I like things

Ghost Recon and it's two expansion packs Desert Seige and Island Thunder are the most addictive games I've ever played. 5+ years and still as fun and challenging as ever. While new games come and go none has ever equaled Ghost Recon's combination of gameplay that offers a plate full of tension, tactics, stealth and action. Plus the community modders have created mods that equal and in some cases better the masterpiece Red Storm Entertainment created. This is one game where you have to think long and hard to stay alive and just when you think you have it all figured out a bullet comes tearing through your body. You can almost feel the impact and the pain. Ghost Recon stands in a class all it's own even though time marches on.

WHAT GAME KEEP ME COMING BACK FOR MORE?

2001 - Game of the Year - GHOST RECON.

While there were plenty of FPS before it and since, GR really created the ultimate tactical FPS and no game has managed to achieve what it achieved since. Oh yeh, they're still trying but noones got it yet.

Ive tried every FPS since GR to see if a new FPS might be even better, but they're all gathering dust on the shelf.

Only GR has remained on my harddrive, and I still love it and play it regularly with dozens of other players weekly.

Even the sequel, Ghost Recon:Advanced Warfighter (GRAW) fails to improve on the Original.

Game of the Year? Nah, Game of the Decade.

Lightspeed.

Well boy and girls.......GREAT NEWS......WE HAVE A WINNER.......AND IT'S NONE OTHER THAN OUR VERY OWN ROCKY :clapping:

I've just this second got the magazine in my hands, and here's their edited version;

Well done Rocky and well done everyone that took part. Despite the PC Gamer (US) review last month of GRAW [a half page 'by-the-way-this-game-came-out-too' review], it's nice to see the original getting a mention and the praise it deserves.

Page 13 BTW.

i love older games, they play well, run great, and there are alot of loyal players! I always find myself jumping into a gr server from time to time, or getting the urge for some solo or coop. This is the same for RVS, RVS is still very popular, 3 of my friends and my younger bro ONLY play RVS. New games are nice to look at but many just lack the FUN factor we all look for, visuals seem to get in the way of gameplay...

BTW I LOVE CSS!

well we all know what the top 2 games are going to be, quake 1 or 2 and CS 1.6
